The thing about D&D games is that they all revolve around rules. Everything you do, everything you see, everything you are, is pre-written in some book. It's like the actual game gets lost in the noise of a billion more or less obscure rules. Personally I hope they never develop anything that dependent on transparent rules again. I don't want to know what kind of dices are thrown behind the curtains, I just want to play the game! I think this was the main reason I couldn't finish Neverwinter Nights 2 (and subsequently never bought the expansions), not just the unfriendly camera and sleep-inducing combat.

Have you guys had a chance to try the new fighting system yet? I read a Swedish review Of NHL 10 last night and they complained that even having such a feature in a hockey game is a failure and that the actual fighting part is weak in itself (comparing it to Clint Eastwood's first-person fighting of that monkey in some of his early films). Also, is it optional and can it be turned off?

Feel free to prove me wrong. -
I wonder how you make a desolate wasteland with thousands of players trying to complete the exact same quests and tasks as yourself..

Games for Windows & Achievements
mkreku replied to vril's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Yeah, sure. Oh hey, you've mentioned before that you've played both Fallout 3 and GTA4. Both are games that support Games for Windows Live and achievements. Mind showing me your gamercard? I'm interested to see how many points you have. I can show you mine, since you accuse me of being a pirate. Notice how easy it is to prove you're not? Let me take a wild one: you "deactivated" your GfWL because it's "terrible"? -
Games for Windows & Achievements

Ok, someone needs to explain this to me. I can understand why a pirate like Purkake would think it's a nuisance (since it also functions as some sort of DRM), but for a normal user? I've only played a few games using Windows For Games Live and the last two worked like this: I started up the game, a small box exclaimed that I was online and then I didn't notice it. Except for perhaps once every second hour when I achieved something. How is that terrible? I find it very slick and unobtrusive. I mean, compare it to Rockstar's Social Club and it's an absolute dream! -
Uh.. no need to brag. Told you there are no females on the Internet!

Thanks Morgoth. I haven't pre-ordered it yet! Mainly because the Collector's Edition hasn't been confirmed for Scandinavia yet. I may end up having to import it from Germany (since that will be in English also). Sucks.

Apparently it's a bit time dependant. This time it was done during Swedish morning hours. Last time I did it at lunch.

Got tired of my free slow-ass internet. Got a new one: That's better.

One of the characters in Mercenaries/Mercenaries 2 has my name. It's really creepy when they call him on the radio or shout his name when you pass by! Fun, but creepy.

Ok, then imagine this. He has a modded Xbox 360. Mass Effect came out for the Xbox before the PC. But he claims he paid for the Xbox 360 version (which is almost twice as expensive as the PC version in Sweden)? How many people here actually believe he all of a sudden paid for a game? Raise your hand! /tumbleweed

If that's a screenshot taken from the actual end sequence of a game that hasn't even been released for 95% of the population on this forum, I'm going to hunt you down and shove that game disc down your throat.

Went to a concert tonite. (Everyone with Spotify, look up "Frantic Sunday"). They were great live, not so interesting to listen to otherwise. I really enjoyed my company too. Good times.

If you choose to make your game using the DirectX API: Windows only. If you choose to make your game using the Open GL API: Windows, Linux, Mac, you name it. The difference is that DirectX is much easier to get to grips with, has better tools and you can do much more advanced stuff with it (not so sure about the last part now though). Personally, I do wish that all developers adapted to the Open GL standard. Maybe it would make Linux a viable OS for gamers in the long run.

What is the best multi-player game ever
mkreku replied to Monte Carlo's topic in Computer and Console
Since I'm playing an MMO beta at the moment, I'm AGAIN reminded of how utterly ****ing annoying it is to play with people you don't choose yourself. First, I am playing on an EU server. That means everyone in Europe plays on the same servers and the main chat is constantly being spammed by Czech's and Polish and what-not. And German people. Always German people. And they won't stop spamming! They keep spamming the same gibberish over and over AND OVER for hours on end, always ending their oh-so-important questions with "???????!!??????!?????". It's like they are of a lesser intelligence. Then we have these grind quests. "Kill ten spies". Sure.. except, everyone else is also doing that. So those 30 or so spies that spawn on one piece of the map are constantly being assaulted by 100 players. I think it took me two hours of fighting for mobs with Czech idiots before I could finally advance THE MAIN QUEST. Not only that.. There is only ONE gathering skill in the game, no matter if you want to pick flowers, mine ore or collect wood. And since some of the MAIN QUESTS involve "Get me ten silver ore", everyone needs to gather everything (Silver is quite high level gatherers resource). Guess how much there is to gather then, among the 100 Czech/Polish/German screaming idiots? Why do people play MMO's again? -
Games for Windows & Achievements

I hope it DOES have them. Seems like the perfect game to have achievements in. -
DirectX is one of a few reasons why games couldn't work on other OS's as well. If you want to break Microsoft's dominance on the OS market, you need to make developers adapt to more open standards. Like Open GL. As an end user, you'd never notice the difference. The graphics will look the same and all GPU's support both standards.

Some random pictures from Aion Beta: It's generally very pretty. Too bad it's a bit boring and repetitive. I made level 10+ at least so now I can fly, which helps a little. But even that grew old fast once I realized I can only be skybound for 60 seconds at a time. Unless I hit level 40 and gain 11 million Kinah (weird name for currency), because then I can buy better wings. I have like 5 thousand right now at level 11.
-
Not yet, but I am only level 6. Levelling up is slow for me. Maybe it's because I suck or maybe the game is made that way. I am playing a scout and even though I am dual wielding the best daggers that money can buy (for my level), I am doing 2-10 hitpoints of damage for every hit in combat. And this is on enemies with a few thousand hitpoints (as all enemies have)! The only way for me to actually kill something is to attack them one-on-one and then "spam" all my skills repeatedly, since they do 60-120 hitpoints worth of damage. Unfortunately, spamming in this game means hitting one button once every 4-5 seconds. That's how exciting combat is. It's horribly boring, but I am hoping getting wings will alleviate some of that. I will try to get to level 10 at least, since that's when "people" say the game opens up.

I'm actually playing the "closed" beta of Aion (another MMO). I was interested in this because it runs on the CryEngine, and it sure does look prettier than most MMO's. But compared to Crysis, it looks like absolute crap. I will probably post a few screenies from it when I'm not feeling lazy (and hungover). As far as the actual game goes.. it couldn't be more generic if it tried. I started as a scout, got a dagger, did my first ten quests (all of which were "get me x amounts of y") before logging off. I will not be paying to play this.
