Chris Avellone novella released
Gizmo replied to Infinitron's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
GoG still says of the novel, "coming soon"; along with the documentary. That's got to be the best scene in the movie. (Among many great ones.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXpCCgR8Ams -

How to make a sucsessful crowdfounding company?
Gizmo replied to Mutated bycicle-mage's topic in Developers' Corner
Wouldn't that be spamming a commercial game company's web forum with a competing product? *There is another game forum that I frequent a lot, and it has always astounded me that indy game developers will not only show up there to announce their own games for sale on that company's own commercial game forums ~made for their games, (doing so because of a deliberate product similarity), but also that they seem to have no concept (or concern) that this is abusive/exploitive imposition on their part, building upon another's work (to bring and keep an audience), and trying to sell that audience; something that I'd think should embarrass them greatly; but it doesn't. ** I know that I'd be livid if I had built a large forum community around a game/or company that I had designed, and then have people posting spam for their games on my server (that I'd be paying for)... This is something that I would feel uncomfortable doing, even if encouraged by the forum owner, and with their full permission. -
Convenience is a strong motivator. I've got at least three retail copies of Planescape, yet I bought the GoG version of the same game, simply for the convenience of a one click install ~fully patched, that works. (And I can say the same for most of the Gold-Box and Legend series games.) I do plan on replacing each of my Steam games one by one as they become available on GoG, to ultimately be able to uninstall Steam permanently. New Vegas and Bloodlines were top of the list, with Disciples 3 plus expansions following it.

It takes a hell of a lot to get me to buy a Steam game; (and it often involves deception, as in the case of the New Vegas collectors boxed set ~pre-ordered). If its on GoG, I'll probably buy it, if it is Steam only, I'll most likely never play it. *I'd say the same of the new Bard's Tale and Torment; but I have them pre-ordered, and only assume [hope] that it will be the GoG versions; I'm not really certain of their release plans just yet. The Steam games that I do buy, generally (almost exclusively) come as part of a humble bundle; but when I uninstall New Vegas, I'll uninstall Steam. [it's the reason I installed Steam ~begrudged]

** My problem with POE is the campfire kit/ rest mechanic... totally unrealistic, and problematic. My own party has been trapped in a deserted cave for [RL] months. They are utterly depleted and unable to rest; unable to proceed past the next monstrous threat further down, and unable to return further up to the Keep to rest. This is because there is a special/text encounter that allows the party to bypass (in my case, an unknown) monster ambush ~but not return back the way they came... and so it is (in this case) impossible to return to the surface without immediately dying due to the forced ambush being the only way out. The camping equipment could [iMO should] be considered for comfort, offering full recovery; where the lack of it could indicate a hard and uncomfortable rest, (offering less than ideal recovery). I think I far preferred the method of rest in 'Realms of Arkania' over PoE. I came into the thread hoping to find out if the ambush problem [mentioned above] had been fixed, or had a solution known; other than losing a vast amount of game progress to revert the save.

Youtube is free. You can tag your video with relevant associative words, and it will come up in user searches where it's a match. You can post the link yourself to any forums you are part of [where relevent]; or even put the link in your SiG. (I have three in mine.) GoG will [may] sell the game for you [both]. -

Self Promotion (first and foremost)... Do you have your demo video on Youtube? [with a link to the funding page]. Also: Patreon... GoG... https://www.gog.com/indie https://www.patreon.com/ -
Repaired wooden frames for two oil paintings; continued work on a commissioned latex mold for decorative soap; watched Game of Thrones for the first time.

Today (and the day before), I watched Season 1 DVDs for the first time. (So you can bet I'm not reading the rest of this thread. )

4 years old; D&D. They bent the rules so I could play a goblin [halfling]. I recall hitting something [worth XP/gold] with a thrown dagger, while standing in a tree.

How to make a sucsessful crowdfounding company?

If I had to guess... and I could be wrong... It might be that the entrance fee is $100 [not $1500, not $2500]; and (in the opinion of others ~perhaps) what are the odds that it is a serious developer ~ one with the drive to actually see the project through to completion... when they apparently need [to essentially beg for] $100 or fail to start their project? *(Even though the perception may not be the reality.) ** I've seen homeless pan-handlers that make more than $100 a day; because they treat it as a daily job [unfortunately]. The reason I mention this is simply that with drive and determination, one can usually succeed... and that a mere $100 [mere to some] probably seems like a small hurdle [and might seemingly imply a lack of determination of the developer] to those you would ask to crowd fund the project. **The flipside: [Perception] Anyone who cannot get $100 from their family [lump or in parts] to start their dream project, might seem a tad doubtful to complete strangers on the Internet; as well they may find it odd as hell that one's friends & family did not bid the first few hundred for the campaign. -
The GoG version seems to work fine; (just tested Rise of the Elves).

Games you want that'll likely never exist

And I'll add a fourth Myth:The Fallen Lords RTS to that list. Fully 3D, with terrain deformation and destructibility. [Myth2] -
The best way to do this [iMO] is to read a lot of novels, in English). Learn the unfamiliar words in their context, (and in more than one context). See how different (and varied) authors employ them. It will only come with experience. As a side project, it might be insightful to read a couple famous novels in English and Russian versions; having a chance to compare them. Something like The Hobbit, Shogun, Worm Ouroboros, etc... (Works where ~presumably, the translations will be extra careful.) *Poems too. ** Also https://librivox.org/ might have many free audio books in both Russian and English to study.

I think Inxile developers have some rules not to release the 2 games in a year. But I could be wrong. Could be 2017, come to think of it. My list drops down to just one then.

Same here; and I already *only* buy games from GoG or through Humble Bundle. For me: Torment: Tides of Numenera Bard's Tale VI

Why not from GoG; and make a new disc? http://www.gog.com/game/star_wars_knights_of_the_old_republic

Pillars of Eternity. Fantastic... One peeve ~ Much as I like the Watcher insight stories for all the NPCs, it really burned me out on them as I discovered that most NPCs in the game have nothing to say. I eventually just stopped bothering to read them ~despite every one of them I'd read being well done and fun to read. Each was a treat ~not unlike like marzipan or chocolate covered cherries, but imagine being force fed a couple of crates of these... One gets sick on it rather quick, no matter how good they are.

Planescape: Torment is PC Gamer's Bestest RPG of All Time
Gizmo replied to ktchong's topic in Computer and Console
Part of the fuss is about the story as it unfolds, and another part is how the PC development, and dialog choices affect the game. The setting is an icing on the cake. -

One can play it as either class throughout... At times some are better than others. What bugged me was that their implementation of the rules does not allow for dual/multiclassing? -

To be honest it's only worth playing once. Go in spoiler free and expect lots of awful combat. Well to be fair, I've heard praise for the game for it's writing, never for combat, so I still have an interest in playing it. I love New Vegas to death because of it's writing as well as it's RPG aspects, but it gets only modest appraisal from people for it's writing. As such, I'd be very curious to see what the games look like that have absolute critical acclaim for the writing. It's got about 900,000 words; and I get the impression that it was a localization nightmare. Combat is seemingly discouraged, as it tends to be the least option; though there are plenty of unavoidable fights. I thought that they missed out on the potential of cranium rats in the narrative. It is definitely an RPG worthy of the title. IMO it's a better RPG than Fallout, though IMO Fallout is the better game. I once asked MCA whether they cast Michael T. Weiss as Nameless for the obvious reason; but as far as he knew, the guy was simply just available at the time; so maybe it was someone else's idea. I can't imagine that it was coincidence alone. *Planescape is the one infinity RPG that actually benefits from the hi-res patches. Its sprites were double size to begin with, and it looks great at ~technically reduced size. -
Shadowrun Returns, and having a great time with it.
