  1. I disagree. Objectifying those with whom we disagree--and subsequently feeling entitled to mistreat them--are human, not first world, issues. Even when it's just words, "grow a thicker skin" translates into a community where we're putting energy into deflecting ugliness that could be put to more constructive purposes--like QA or better gun balance. As for threats of real world violence, obvious jokes aside, there need to be consequences, because if there aren't folks think they're OK. You know, because it's the Internet. Trolling is a human rights issue, that's pretty funny. As for constructive purposes, meh, a bunch of people armchair developing on a forum is a waste of time regardless so that's not a problem. Would hope developers don't actually lose work time due to some random person posting stuff on a forum.
  2. Have to remember to keep faking urgency when problems arise at work. General level of apathy is rising steadily It is funny though when the client doesn't care all that much about their problem, so if they don't care, I don't care as, well, they leave me alone.
  3. And maintenance programmers won't want your head on a stake if you keep it simple, as well. And hey, he could have started out with Turing like me
  4. I guess it needed more emoticons.
  5. Valve makes games ?
  6. Can't see a situation when you'd need to leave to silence a person, most things have ignore support and there's always the will to just ignore chat.
  7. Trenches stories are somewhat amusing, of late a lot seem to be "LOL my job in QA sucks!". http://trenchescomic.com/tales/post/one-of-those-people this one is funny, probably because I doubt it actually happened.
  8. http://www.polygon.com/2013/7/25/4553536/is-company-of-heroes-2-anti-russian Some Russians are not pleased about CoH 2's handling of history. Well ok, and a Poles and a Ukranian as well (my mistake).
  9. They'd just make another thread, why waste the effort.
  10. Why was this worthy of a thread again ?
  11. What's the law's definition of a troll ?
  12. Surely there's more benefit than that, a dignified figurehead isn't all that much to crow about
  13. Did he ever say "Look at the non-rich person!" and then cackle in a upper-class manner ?
  14. Tch, that sucks.
  15. Got into work as so far reading - http://chrishernandezauthor.com/2013/07/09/working-with-the-french-army/ - has been the only interesting thing.
  16. It is, really, they can jaw as long as they want and if you ignore them they get no rise, no hurt feelings in you and if you do it right you can just cease to see them as people. It's more fun to hit back and hard, though (guy teases you for a while, retort by making a joke about his recently dead father, for example ).
  17. I've gotten nicer as I've aged, sadly.
  18. Problem with a lot of the schemes to prevent nastiness is they are open to abuse, as the investigations aren't exactly such. So you can get griefed that way. Heh, one good thing about user owned dedicated servers - admins around to boot griefers or harassers.
  19. Cool story, bro. I agree that this is an issue. I'd like to see software/hardware developers take better steps to improving this in a proactive way. Mangling your post a bit, but I agree with that assessment of twitter. People can just drive by flame you, forums you tend to get more stuck in. May be the nature of the format and how that one liner looks on your screen rather than the twitter space For abuse in MP games, well other than providing mute functionality, what more could they do ? Speech recognition to check for bad words and auto-ban you ? Not a super fan of enforced politeness, even if you are forced to deal with mean people.
  20. Hah, seriously ? Well for a forum, you can write more, is easy to moderate and I imagine it's not as naggy as Twitter can be for developers (though I assume this is notifying them on a phone in this case). Probably reduced contact as well, many people have Twitter accounts but not many will bother registering with a forum to blather out some abuse to a developer. Essentially is easier to be detached from the consumer.
  21. Hm, her response was also kind of unimpressive, but can't think of anything better to strike back with. I still think developers shouldn't waste their time on social media like twitter or something similar to interact with their customers. Forums are good enough for that, no ?
  22. Certainly could have been more cutting. "Whatever, ****ing moron" is pretty weak.
  23. Well for one who knows what was said to upset him so, could be 'die in a fire for nerfing my gun you moron!' or 'I am going to kill you for this!'. First one, in an online context, is shrug worthy to me, the latter has more room to warrant further action. That's a pretty funny story though, Amentep. Good revenge on him
