  1. No, but giving up on a game immediately because it's 'too hard' for you is pretty stupid behaviour when all it needs is time and persistence, after all. Dugas' little spiel there touched on people quitting Deus Ex based on Liberty Island, although I highly doubt people can be that feeble. "Your making games that are less complex than they once were simply so they can be understood by people who drool on themslves when they talk" You're reading that quote the wrong way. Saying they dumb it down so any idiot can play it, isn't saying people that like the games are stupid. The bar is very low, that's all, heh. I'd like to see an example of inaccessible game - that is, one a player simply cannot play, other than physical disability. So pushing that bar lower isn't needed and in the long end it's not beneficial to players (easier things are, you sort of suffer from a form of atrophy). What is wrong with elitism, anyway ? You end up thinking one group is scum, they think you're a jerkbag. Pretty much a normal situation, really.
  2. That's not a feeling, it's simply an acceptance of reality.
  3. Or people just think they see it. Mostly entitlement, though, especially here re: any complaint or displeasure with a design choice. Although I guess I am elitist in thinking those that put the time and effort in are indeed better than those that don't
  4. It amazes me how the difficulty of learning a programming language can vary depending on how well written a book one has. Well using C++ Primer by Prata. Useful, if I weren't so freaking lazy.
  5. Ah, elitism, second only to entitlement in buzzword usage on forums, heh. Explain the elitism being expressed here, please? I've faith enough in gamers that most can figure stuff out, those that can't or don't want to be patient enough, well that's their failing. Companies don't, it seems. However, that said, I don't think Deus Ex HR looks to be dumbed down, heh. But this is the joker behind Rainbow Six : Vegas, so
  6. This was an amusing read from Dugas :
  7. Hm. I dunno about just doing sequels. It worked for Infinity Ward. It's a bit disappointing to see them do this with the talent, but you've got to start somewhere and any revenue is good. Their only original game so far was pretty good, so things are on the up!
  8. It's so easy to get hooked on one though. My feeling is they'll do ok on it moneywise, they've got attention with the first one so that'll help.
  9. Hm, can I get a copy if I mail Obsidian a cheque ?
  10. Fixed a huge problem for a client by changing an 'OR' to an 'AND'. Took 3 days to determine what was going on. Bug hunting is sort of fun, the moment when you're just about to find the problem is the most exciting, better than the joy at fixing the problem, or the unravelling of the workings of the code - when everything falls into place and you slowly zero in on the problem..ah nothing like it. Also, fell behind on C++ learning so wasting my lunch break on that. =)
  11. Ah hah, proof it was dumbed down!
  12. How was anyone nitpicking, heh. Those changes mentioned were pretty significant ones, after all. Then again a nitpick is subjective, heh.
  13. OUPT isn't that bad, it's a bit of an extreme change from the stacks of doom, would have been better to have limited stacks managed by some mechanic. Religion should have been tweaked rather than just removed, it made unofficial teams in Civ 4. But otherwise I agree with you about those changes being toward ill for the game. The transports one I laugh at, people welcoming at it was "annoying' to build transports to move units.
  14. Eh I wouldn't say it's dumbed down. At least not significantly.
  15. Ah, rural Canada.
  16. Hm, true. I do have a theory stolen from many others about Civ being like Star Trek in that the odd numbered ones are less than impressive. III certainly was, the changes they made were just bleh. But I'd definitely advise that you play Civ 2 if you've never done so. They really need to make SMAC 2. But maybe without Shafer doing the design *laugh*
  17. Start with II and then move up.
  18. Probably should get this. Or maybe hang on until the GOTY edition is out in the future.
  19. For my sins, I'm listening to Death Magnetic. http://il.youtube.com/watch?v=1Xb8n2ffAic&...feature=related Best part is the "LOVE IS A FOUR LETTER WORD!!"
  20. Well that's true for all the Civs. Although I put cities on stuff like Wealth or Research more than improvements as all that does is weaken my economy.
  21. Best way to play Civ is at Marathon I found, gives you a nice sense of creating history.
  22. Usually the Enter key spam ends by the time you have more than 2-3 cities, though. Not the case with my games in Civ V. But then again, maybe I didn't adapt, heh. Overall only things I really want reverted is happiness, health to return and adjustable taxation.
  23. Cities are indeed just bases that turn out units. Thrilling stuff.
  24. What, no rioting ? No burning cars, smashing windows, or an orgy of destruction ? Bah, people need to learn how to celebrate victory.
  25. Command & Conquer. Forgot how much I hate the Delphi mission.
