  1. Not necessarily true. The lack of editing tools makes Painter inferior. I've seen Concept Artists in the film industry who use PS only. I.e. Ian McCaig or James Clyne (from some Gnomon Workshop DVD's). The result was of course awesome. PS basically only has one drawing tool (Airbrush type) with lots of options, whereas Painter uses different Brushes that are derived from traditional painting tools, where you really can draw pictures that look like they were drawn traditionally. Like this Ballerina I've drawn some time ago, something I couldn't achieve with Photoshop's brushes. The rotateable Canvas is also a huge plus. But else Painter sucks in terms of editing possibilities. Anyway, with both tools there're awesome results achievable, depending on the artist's skill and what he/she is more pleasant to work with. I suppose you try to work hard with both and then choose which you like more.
  2. If you can afford it, go order the A4. You can always minimize the working area via driver panel.
  3. I just heard that Quake 4 got a devastatingly 70% in the newest PC GAMER Issue. Final Verdict: Highs - Loads of action; gruesome visuals; Q3DM17 with Doom 3 graphics Lows - Uninspired gameplay; Stroggification plot twist goes nowhere; no multiplayer bots. Bottom line - This old-school shooter suffers from a lack of 21st-century game design. LOL. That's the reason why old-school devs suck. A franchise alone doesn't make a game good.
  4. I can't comment myself how an A4 "feels" with a 17", but when I was myself struggling with the question "A5 or A4", I did some investigations on various art communities for some feedback, and most people concluded that the A4 is a bit too large for most cases. Which was a welcome confirmation since I wasn't willing to throw away so much money for an A4 anyway. I'm now used to work with an A5 and Painter as well, and most images I'm doing with 3000x3000 pix (make sure you've enough system memory), and I'm super fine with it - so no complains at all. However, maybe you know someone where you could try out various sizes - that would be ideal.
  5. I'm using myself a Wacom Intuos 3 A5 format which is absolutely perfect with my 17" monitor. However, if you use a 21" monitor, I recommend an A4 tablet.
  6. It's basically an Ultima Underworld Clone, with the magic system of B&W (=bad). You can download the demo somewhere if you want.... At least I wasn't too impressed with it.
  7. Here's the official site now. http://masseffect.bioware.com/
  8. I wasn't insanely impressed with the footage (again). It just seems to be a funky looking LoTR-Style Ripoff with mediocre animations and boring gameplay (hello Morrowind!). And Todd sounds like a woman!
  9. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I didn't know they had half-cyborgs in Old Persia. What's next? Jade in a Domina-Outfit?
  10. Kewl!!! New BioFodder!!! So how is it? Anyone care about writing down some impressions or giving me links to reviews? Wasn't Kingmaker awarded as "RPG of the Year 2004" somewhere?
  11. Ohh, and don't forget the Total War Series (England), or Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow (France). All quality titles. Today I bought Fahrenheit.... tomorrow I should find out whether this is another gem made in Europe. Though, confessed, my alltime favorite titles like BG, Fallout, System Shock 2, Deus Ex etc. were still made in NA. Bottom Line: Great games are not limited where they're coming from, but the smart brains that are working on them.
  12. There're plenty of them. You're just too nescient and selfish to recognize them. But that's Okay, otherwise the Volo-Logic (i.e. everything I don't play automatically sucks) wouldn't be Volo's Volo-Logic.
  13. Absolutely. Making 1 million-poly-models in such a short time is indeed impressive... (that fish demo on the homepage --> WOW!). Anyway, IIRC, even Bioware mentioned they're now using ZBrush for DA. I say go for it!
  14. This might interest some of you. Monolith staff is talking about FEAR's AI.
  15. Excellent for Normal Map creation. But I only tried out the demo (v1.5), and there was some kind of tutorial system integrated.... it seems to be pretty intuitive. I'm doing all my 3D stuff with Maya though, since I can't afford another 3D package like ZBrush.
  16. I don't know about you people, but I'm actually concerned with the course of events of a company. If Bio gets richer, I'm happy because with the wads of money they have this COULD mean more risk/experimentation-preparedness could lead into possibly better/more innovative games means I'm happier! If EA gets richer, I couldn't care less, because they don't use the money for innovations, but dumb sequels and p0rn Stars.
  17. So you think the proportions look ugly? Understanding anatomy isn't something you learn from today up to tomorrow. I just started drawing recently so I've still tons of things to learn. Though your concerns about the "bad" anatomy are notated. However, if you have some useful tips/resources or some examples of your own work to show, I'd love to see it!
  18. Don't know, I think they're right. Besides, balltet dancers do have short legs, don't they?
  19. Here's another piece I've just finished recently... A ballerina, drawn with (digitally) coloured pencils and pastel, with the pose based on a picture reference. A beautiful Ballerina Although it doesn't look like much, I can guarantee that it was a hell of work! I hope you like the choice of colours and the overall proportions!
  20. Okey dokey, here's one version. The masking though was a hell of work, considering that the source images are low-res jpgs. Anyway, I hope you like it.
  21. If you tell me what exactly you want, I could help you out. As I understand it now, you want the "She's a sweet girl blabla" text squeezed between the "Strawberry" and "Shortcake" text?
  22. I see the sheer excitement of the audience here is dazzling, so I thougt I should add a little piece I just finished: A hand, modeled in Maya via subdivisions. "
  23. So, since Darth Sirius started an Art thread, I thought I should show you some of my stuff I did lately too - constructive criticism of course is desired. Alright, here're some pictures I drew with pencil and graphite chalk: At this point I didn't have a scanner yet, so forgive the bad image quality... A Knight sitting on his horse Right now that shows only some basic line work, but I might render him at some time in future. Old Man That's a portrait of the french artist Gustave Courbet that I just drew yesterday. Gustave Courbet Here's some Painter work (drawn with Wacom Intuos 3): That's right, a friggin' apple, based on a photo reference. An apple And to retain the tension, here are two friggin' tomatos! Actually, that's the work I'm most proud of... because of the natural colour range and overall composition. The Tomatos There I tried to draw my hand (with moderate success), inclusive the injury on my thumb. Hand That's an eye based on a tutorial. That was a more challenging task than it actually seems at first.... A beautiful eye That's a speedpainting that only should suggest atmosphere. City Scape WIP/3D Art: A Car coachwork. Car coachwork That's a landscape I did some time ago, inclusive a complex shader-network that fakes impressionistic painting style... Landscape That's a short preview render I did for a buddy (he might use the final composition later in his amateur movie). A coat floating in the wind... [~ 3MB, Divx required]. Animated Coat Well, that's it (for now). I think you already know my old 3D stuff, like the trolls and the normal map examples, so I didn't include them here. Use the search if you feel to marvel my old crap...
