Steam has been impressing me lately, much more so than any other format at least. Seems like it's getting less garbage games that everyone talks about and games that actually matter. I love that. Cuphead coming in September, Sonic Forces in November and who knows what else we'll get before the year's over

Your Gender/Sex IN VIDEO GAMES, and does it matter to you?
SonicMage117 replied to nstgc's topic in Computer and Console
I really wish that were true and it was about memory/optimization... unfortunately it's not. If it was true then the game would run alot smoother on consoles. I mean, how much more memory would it take if the argonians had totally different models? A few kilobytes due to compression. How would it affect character creation if it they didn't have breasts? Not at all but it would be hard for us to distinguish between malevajd female for this race. Truth be told, there is a deep science around this, it's more complex than we all thought: -
Woah! I was actually gonna make a thread about this - If I had done it, it probably wouldn't get much attention. Anyways, the sequel looks much better and more expansive than the first in every way. I'm still wondering if I should buy it though. It's far different than the first.

Beamdog doesn't get any love here sadly, people are jealous that a new generation is getting to experience classics with all the bells and whistles I guess. This is by far, your best work. Congrats!

Dex. It's lik a Strugatsky novel... But not as boring of course.

Your Gender/Sex IN VIDEO GAMES, and does it matter to you?

You just reminded me of a meme that I see occasionally posted on facebook which talks about society's expectations by depicting 2 pictures.. one with a large woman and a skinny man and the other a large man and a skinny woman. Of course I don't think I can post the meme here, as it probably wouldn't bare appropriate for this forum. I don't think Argonian women have breasts to appeal to male players and I don't think the devs were too worried about the scientific value of the design. I think they just made them that way as it was the easiest way of identifying their sex but that is just my opinion. Skyrim has some interesting mods with sliders for anything/everything but that is a different subject all together. Now to touch on the psychology of this discussion: As a human race, are we really drawn to what is attractive or is that myth? Every psycologist has a different view on this but I suppose that's not important, what's important is what you feel. Personally, I believe that once you reach a certain place in your life - whether it be an event or just that age, everything changes. You are no longer bound to the sexual precepts for what attracts you but what attracts you is different in a form, and this is not even limited to sex but with likings in general. For ex. I may not have liked type B of woman when I was younger for reasons 1, 2, 3 but now I do because I've simply grown into that and the realization that beauty is only skin deep and doesn't last forever is a concept that has finally sunk in. Will people be attracted to the same male or female in 50 years when they're old, wrinkled and need help pooping? Or do those people live in the moment not having that knowledge or wisdom of clarity. I can understand the ignorance when people are young. As I say before, when people get married and have kids, everything changes. And yes I agree with every genre having their own stereotype of a female character. Unfortunately anime will always feature perfect fantasy models, western games seem to have moved on from that type of thing. While "sexy" was everything in the 90's and early 2000's, that certainly is not to be said in 2017. Lara Croft is a nice example of how the games industry has been maturing in the west. Lara in the 90's was all breasts, now she doesn't have anything really going on that makes her "sexy" but I'm willing to bet that someone out there will say "I prefer the new Lara over the old Lara, simply because she has an actual personality now so tht makes her sexier than the 90's porn star Lara" Devs in the west know that if they want people to take their games seriously, to not oversex their product. With the wisdom that oversexualized women will distract players from an engaging storyline. Japan's culture is completely different. Anime/Jrpg/Visual Novel fans expect overbearing oversexualization and plead for it not to get censored so I'm pretty sure that's a much much younger audience, storywriting isn't as important because waifus are what make the game or sell it. For the west, it's relatable guy/girl next door model. For the east, it's cute girl/guy that fufills fantasy and desrire. There really is no balance here, it pretty much leans one way or the other. I hear people saying "Ciri is sexy!" Even with a scar across her face but I wonder, if Ciri was a girl in real life, would they think the same thing. Most will say yes of course but realistically, as soon as they'd meet her they wouldn't be able to look at her because of that huge scar - indeed, the seperation of reality vs game is different as it can be lol And thus, it's an interesting conversation indeed. Sometimes I have to wonder how many men above 30 are into anime and how that would stack up against people under 30 years of age. I'm not saying that anime/Jrpg/visual novels are immature by any means but I'm looking at how its evolved over the years. I was alive and already old when anime just started to become a big thing to the west, it was such a different monster then than it was now but then again, I guess everything has changed since those days. -

My useless but honest thoughts on anime vs realistic, for what it's worth: It's hard for me to picture any anime character as realistic as the basis/point of them is to be fantasy and cute and give the watcher somwthing they cant from a real life woman. I'll say, it's far too easy to draw a perfect woman than to find someone in real life so it's a bit unfair for me to say that anime does a well enough job to capturing a "realistic" essence in any way. Other than that, I have yet to see an anime or anime-related game with some realistic or relatable writing that can pull me into a realistic juncture like an non-anime medium can. The anime culture is definitely a popular thing but I'm wondering what age audience it's holding the most right now. Anyhoot, Quiet is a great character so is Ciri. I think both of them are attractive. I don't think Fury from Darksiders is attractive or realistic (well maybe it is, who knows what the horsemen really look like after all) but somehow am more interested in her character. I think alot of people get confused that realistic means powerless. As a huge fan of anything Nitroplus and an avid player of Nitroplus Infinite Blasterz, I'd say a girl/woman doesn't need superpowers to be strong in her own way but can melt a man with her heart, what she says or how she says it. Don't get me wrong, you get to see flaws in anime girls - more often than none but it's a mixture of all the elements that remind me that I'm watching a cartoon and thus even the most mature animes out there still make me feel like I'm watchimg something made for the tween demographic. All those waifus though. I never could quite understand the obsession that some people get with anime women. The stereotype being the shy schoolgirl lol maybe it's just me. Perhaps I am missing something or lacking in imagination. -

Umm... so how is this bad voice acting? You should all be impressed... 11 minutes of Secret Of Mana Remake. -
Sega just won't do it. They're actually leaning towards pc more than anything as that's where they've been making the most money as of yet. But yes, my favorite console, after the 2001 Xbox. Both consoles were severely underrated and unappreciated. Give pc a run for it the time as even the top end gpu's with 4x's the specs couldn't even match the Dreamcast's graphics for some reason.

What do you think about the "romance" in RPG?

It wouldn't even be the worst offender actually, introducing Saints Row's IV Wad Wad edition (I really hope that it was a joke) https://www.theverge.com/2013/8/10/4608848/ludicrous-1-million-saints-row-iv-special-edition-includes Oh my... oh dear. -
Your Gender/Sex IN VIDEO GAMES, and does it matter to you?
SonicMage117 replied to nstgc's topic in Computer and Console
I've played as "ugly" women plenty of times, unattractive demonic looking women, burned victims, etc. So Idk about that. Max Caufield from Life Is Strange isn't anything to look at, loved playing the game as her because of her personality, story, and the game itself. I could name many more games but the point is, a woman doesn't have to be attractive for me to prefer to play as them vs male characters. So no, not lying. I guess I just have a mature mind when it comes to that. Like i said, being married and having kids changes everything. I don't expect people who aren't married out there anywhere to understand because they haven't developed that mindset yet. And no, I don't think devs in 2017 are saying "More people will play our games if the females are hot, they HAVE to be hot so the audience will be bigger" because it simply isn't true. Sex doesn't sell like it used to and there's a good reason for that. The whole "Hot girls in the game will help it sell more" is just another myth. Hot and perfect isn't relatable, realistic is. Realistic meaning imperfections, flaws and indirect susbtabce of that nature. It's why Hollywood has changed as well, nobody likes the Megan Fox model-types anymore, everyone wants the girl next door. I think people genuinely want good games with good stories. Transistor is a great example of how well a female game appeals to men without the "hot" factor having any place but then again, who's to say sexy or hot is/isn't just one thing. After all, there are people who think women are sexy with clothes on and as soon as they take their clothes off, not so much. -
Replaying Transistor... I'll never understand why people want a sequel to Bastion and Transistor. While I'm a huge fan of these games and the characters/worlds they brought about, a sequel would make zero sense. I would however like to see Red and The Kid in a 2D crossover fighting game like the one on Kickstarter which features different characters from different games. I use to find myself favoring Bastion more, but of you asked me now, I'd say Transistor delights me more. Of course Pyre was off the wall strange but a gud'n as well but Transistor seems the most focused of Super Giant's games.

What do you think about the "romance" in RPG?
SonicMage117 replied to btsam's topic in Computer and Console
That's exactly right, romances are usually treated as mini-games in rpg's. That's why it gets the well deserved hate among people. That is indeed the problem here. Trust me when I say that adding romances to a game, no matter how well done will not draw a female populus to the game or games in general. That is just a myth flying around the web. Look at the core genre that women streamers are playing... shooters. And that's not just because they're trying to be competitive but because the female populus in gaming likes to feel powerful. Guns make people feel powerful in games or in real life. My wife thinks romances in games are creepy... with the way companies like Obsidian, Bioware, etc have treated them in the past I can definitely see why. So she tends to stick to games like Zelda and The Sims. Yes, The Sims has a better romance system than any rpg we've seen.. then again so does Stardew Valley (Stardew Valley is not an rpg but a simulator much like Sims but is confused with being an rpg quite often). At this point, it looks like more guys are interested in having romances in video games. I'm looking at the reactions for Witcher's nude scenes and revolt for games getting censored on pc (which was just recently on news before the hurricanes came into play) Me, personally I don't care one way or the other. I just like to play good games, like Josh Sawyer said... Good satisfying romances are hard to pull off - of course it's easy to satisfy young hormone raging teens with a 5 second nudity script on screen but to create something truly meaningful has not been accomplished in rpg's. When you're married with kids, a 5 second sex scene is nothing to be excited about. I feel like romances with actual purpose have been accomplished in other types of games though, which is quite odd since rpg's are regarded to having more in-depth stories than action/adventure (another myth). Maybe it's because rpg's have such an expansive script that they're afraid to dwindle the story by doing a justifiable romance? Who knows... Meh. Oh well. -

Yes, we are in that age sadly. Where everything is offensive I guess but thankfully, that doesn't stop game devs from making games how they want (most of the time). -

If I have to spell it out "Gromnir getting angry" was a indirect reference to the Hulk, replacing Hulk with Gromnir. You're the only one in a loop here, now instead of talking to me, you're only talking about me in responses to other people. Your obsessive pettyness continues. That's why it seems like you're offended. I also love how you're in a loop about "getting this thread back on topic, why make it tougher for mods?" but keep replying in ways to derail it further and encourage to derail the thread in the same breath. Irony. And the fact that you always question the genuine nature of anyone who opposes you is laughable. Yes, Gromnir, get some sleep... all that lack of sleep has costed you. Time to get over it and move on. -

Sir Gromnir, It was indeed hard for me to read your comment because I felt like I traveled back in time and was reading some rough draft footing from a young drunk Shakespeare. I have no reason to say so if I didn't feel it necessary to. What should I gain? I think you missed the sarcasm. Clearly there is a language barrier between you and I. I didn't mean you were actually angered, it was a reference to something... well nevermind. You just reminded me of something. I don't really care if I make you proud or not, you're not my wife or my kids and quite frankly I don't know who you are as you clearly know nothing about me. I don't know, you seem somewhat offended if anything. The fact of my original statement remains true. There are plenty of petty posts/commemts here on this forum or section of this forum as anywhere else. People here talk about other forums being cancer or what have you, the members of this forum sometimes think they are excluded from the rest of the internet. It's simply not true, everyone is guilty of the forum cancerous behavior. That's all I was trying to say. Not white knighting or defending anyone from other sections or forums. Really, I sincerely apologize for the puns and such. I didn't know they would strike a nerve. When you talk to yourself in third person, I thought you were role playing and now I see that it may actually be how you talk in real life. Like I said, my English is terrible, and even with all my travels I've never met someone quite so entertaining as you... or at least that I can remember. I will say that I'm glad this forum has a Gromnir. Goodnight young sir. In other news, Sonic Forces will have a base function! -

Hmmmm... I'm not desperate, and it wasn't meant as an insult to you so it's fine. Then again, I now consider that your dialect imay be far different from mine as you are from a different whereabouts. My first language is spanish so there is alot of english that I haven't heard, I admit. There is a language barrier here I see. I didn't make this about me, at least not intentionally. So there's that for what its worth. It is nonsense, isn't it? Anything that our minds reject or places as irrelavent is nonsense. Even things that are relaized and legitimate still get labeled as nonsense after all. So I yes, in calculated measure of the nine divines, I hereby decree to thee that my comments are rubbish nonsense! Lastlt, sorry, I did nut mean to offend Gromnir. Gromnir sad. Gromnir have cookie. GROMNIR GETTING ANGRY!!! ^I tried. Talking Gromnir doesn't suit me well. There are many a Destiny fans out there so I'll post these -

I know alot of guys who play as a female character just to have something nice to look at and I don't blame them. I mean, if I was single I could get away with that lol I have seen alot of guys who do this being called sexists but I think that's a bit outta place... After all, if a male is attracted to a female body, this is a compliment to the devs and it's the devs - if anyone- who should be called sexists. Anywho, I have just been reminded that I own Arcana Hearts 3 and Nitroplus Infinite Blasterz on Steam which is the ultimate feminist game but also the ultimate sexist game. Reason being that all the characters are strong, smart and lovable females from visual novels which consists of female fanbase. However, a good 95% of people who play these 2D female anime fighters are all male because guys like to look at the booty. I think it's an interesting subject for sure. I love playing as female characters though, even when they are not attractive. As long as they're BA! :D P.S I can't wait for the new Darksiders game, which has that fiery haired vixen. She looks awesome. -

They aren't all bad but that thread was pretty terribleis funny on a certain level. 1/2 posters saying they see nothing wrong with ______. other half saying you gotta be blind to not see the wrong. complete absence o' any middle ground where reasonable discussion can take place. unintended hilarity ensues.I think it's hypocritical for anyone on this forum to look down on the people on those thread for arguing. A few months after I joined this forum, people encouraged arguments and blunt opinions. I even got blocked by a few for saying "I don't want to post my proof, I don't need your validation, I don't want to argue", add to that the cancerous political discussions in the way-off topic that always gets heated so yeah, it's quite silly for anyone here to act as though it's more immature or anything along those lines. is hypocritical if you mock such discussions when they happen regardless o' the fora? lord knows we personal has lamented, ad nauseum, the increasing predictable polarization o' perspectives on these boards, and Gromnir is hardly alone. point out how folks in arguments is complete talking past each other is a common critique 'cause such happens with great frequency and is not limited to any particular portion o' the board. sure, has always been an issue when discussing gaming issues to have folks with comical myopic viewpoints refusing to consider any argument but their own. weren't any different in 1999. however, wannabee social engineers throwing themselves into the donnybrook has become more common in the past couple years. is unsurprising folks is even less open-minded 'bout cultural issues than they is 'bout games. in any event, your rush to defense o' the masses is cute and all, but perhaps a bit misguided. HA! Good Fun! Look here, fearless stone giant who hails the forums... To be honest I don't know half what you just said, I don't speak Gromnir or Ogre. For that I apologize but... I'm not white knighting anything or rushing in to defend anyone but why am I getting scorned for not judging them for something that everyone here is guilty of? Misguided? Not so much... more like just having a different view is all. I'm sorry I don't understand yours or others or go along with others but as always, my opinion is invalid as ever and I'm a troll for thinking differently (as some would have others believe). Still, entertaining none-the-less if I do say so myself. You are no match for my elven archery skills. On guard!!! -
What do you think about the "romance" in RPG?
SonicMage117 replied to btsam's topic in Computer and Console
Most of the time romance isn't needed in rpg's and feels tacked on. However, I've found romances always do best in action/adventure games. Not sure why this is but according to storytelling, it's much easier to pull off in that space, thus more successful... Want romances with substance? Don't look in rpg's Unless you don't mind sillyness or the arkwardness that comes with it. However, this may change in the future. As video games evolve, so does the story telling and the depth that comes with it. -
Me... I think I've accumulated almost a hundred games this year but most were free. I have maybe purchased 30 or so. I love every one that I've gotten Sonic Forces and Evil Within 2 on the way and that's whta I'm closing this year out with.

The game-specific section is usually much more sane than this section and the even the way-off topic section. I am everyehere and besides that one thread, the only other bad one I've seen is the anime one. However, it isn't really about the threads, it's more of the comments or people that comment in it. Just look at how many decent topics/threads we have here only to get ruined by comments later. It's the Internet, anything can be squandered and squandered quickly at that. Either way, the thread's just as bad as the politics one and Arvan Eleron and the mods warned me about.
