To be honest, I would not be surprised if many people are waiting until all the expansion packs are out before buying this game. I am basically that kind of consumer, I buy only game of the year editions, not so much because of the price (although that helps), but I enjoy the idea of buying a game only when its complete.

Tyranny didn't fail economically. It didn't reach what Paradox expected it to sell at release. But 562k copies + GOG + whoever haven't even started the game yet is profitable for Paradox. The team wasn't huge and the game wasn't being worked on for years. Great to hear that. Tyranny was fantastic RPG. I absolutely loved it. I think its very underrated. The combat was really not as good the POE, because of the lack of friendly fire and having most abilities on a cool down, but the story and game structure were absolutely amazing. I just wish we got a game with the story and structure of Tyranny and the Combat and polish of POE. That would be amazing!

I am also curious about it. I would like this game to do well since I do want more games like this to be made. And Tyranny already failed economically (even though I thought that story wise It was way better than POE). So I am a bit worried that this one doing badly will mean Obsidian wont consider this kind of games to be viable anymore. Off topic: Tyranny is an underappreciated gem, despite the combat mechanics being worse that POE (Runs away to take cover)

I speak Chinese and English, my main problem with making a translation is that i don't quite understand what you are referring to by saying a Norwegian Blue, it seems to me like it would be a drink. In which case the translation is quite free and could be done either by using characters that match the sounds in English or by simply translating the meaning like 你有没有一杯蓝色挪威? The meaning of the words are important to choose the proper measure word. For instance, I have read on the internet that in monthy python a Norwegian Blue is a type of parrot, in that case it would translate to 你有没有一只"蓝色挪威“鹦鹉? or in case you don't feel the need to clear up it is a parrot it would simply be 你有没有一只蓝色挪威?. In the second example you would not be able to know right away from the sentence if it is a parrot, but the measure word would tell you it is either a small animal or a bird. In the case it is not a drink or a parrot, then the translation would be different of course. Actually if you give me more info i would be happy to tell, i am actually Latin American, but i have lived in china for 6 years and work in an all Chinese speaking environment so i can provide some help, and if i cant tell you the answer right away, i can at least ask one of my delightful coworkers. Man, that is so cool! How'd /why'd you move(?) to China? How'd you learn Chinese? Also, it was really interesting seeing you talk about the parrot translation. What's actually changing in the sentence? You said the measurement word? There's a word that says the measurement in the sentence? Well Chinese has some words that are used before nouns (where articles would be placed in English) and they classify the noun according to its type, shape, or measurement unit. In Spanish we refer to them as classifiers, but in English i have always heard them being referred to as measure words which seems to be more of a direct translation of their Chinese name (量词) When to use a measure word and when not to use it can be tricky sometimes for a foreigner (the same way its tricky to know when to use an article in English if your native language does not have articles). As you can see in this case "freeal" who is a native speaker considered it was more natural to skip it, but I as a foreigner with a Spanish speaking background would have included it. The measure words often adds more context and meaning to a sentence, specially if you are trying to understand a word that you haven't heard before or is translated phonetically from another language. It is specially useful when the final noun is missing during oral communication. For instance if someone tells you "Give me one (paper)" 给我一张(纸)"in Chinese, even if he doesnt say the word paper, you would probably know he is referring to a paper since he is using the measure word for flat objects. And i learned Chinese because i work for a tech company in shanghai where, besides me, there are only two people that can communicate in English. At some point my job that was originally to provide marketing to latin america, changed in to trying to coordinate different engineering departments with managers that hated each other. So you can i say I learned by a combination of effort, perseverance and resistance to frustration hahaha.

Let me ask you something, are there any of those exaggerated, sexy, and/or goofy characters in PoE1? Appearance wise, it doesn't seem like it, but that's where personality comes in. We at least had hiravias, though the game was clearly lacking when it comes to sense of humor, even counting him. I dont see her as a seriour character at all. A nice looking girl obssessed with death that spends her free time inspecting cadavers. Seems like a b movie character to me. And that is why i like her.

I think the fact that this character is not among the rooster of companions in the first place, is proof that "fun" is not really a priority for this game. The rest of the characters seem too nuanced, too serious.Where are the exageratted characters, the sexy characters, the goofy characters, those that are not so deep, but plain old fun? This is a game after all. Honestly, the fact that this character is getting so much attention should be proof enough, that there should be balance between depth and fun. It cannot always all be so serious.

Not really very exciting as an update, just really glad this is coming sooner than later. I think Pillars 2 just doesnt carry the same level of excitement of the first one. The first one was about reviving a lost genre. Why is this one exciting? they should use the updates to tell us about it. At this point, the only thing I get is "is like pillars 1, but better", and that's enought for me, a fan of isometric rpgs, to buy it, but how about the rest of people? It doesnt even make me all that excited.

I dont care about updates now, but i would have really liked it if they had meaningful updates when there was still a possibility to reach the streach goals. For me, obsidian failed to generate enough hype to still be of the news after the campaign was officially over. That crucial time when new contributers could have been found was wasted. As of now i only care about the quality of the finished game, the updates are not important. I trust they will make a good job.

I think the perpetual problem of localization is that fantasy related things always sound less stupid in a foreign language, because we tend to relate our own language and accent with day to day life and the common people we know. Whereas a foreign language(even if we are completely fluent in it) always has a greater sense of mystery and difference, I tend you enjoy a lot fantasy and science fiction in the languages I have learned by studying. But if you put the same dialogue and content in my native language and accent I usually cringe, and feel it sounds utterly idiotic.

I think you would be creating a lot of dump stats that way. It would make mix maxing much more common. Min maxing is already common among players that, well, want to min max. For virtually every class and role, Might and Intelligence are god stats, Constitution and Resolve are dump stats, and Dexterity and Perception sort of occupy a "well, they're nice to have, but..." range. Every class wants to do damage, which makes Might attractive - even pure tanks want Might, because the AI takes into consideration the potential incoming damage from a DA when it decides whether or not to chase that juicy, squishy Wizard rather than stick to your chufty, crunchy tank. Might also influences spell intensity, including amount of healing spells do... including a Fighter's Constant Recovery and the Veteran's Recovery talent. Might also increases the very important Fortitude defense, which is used to defend against most hard control effects like Prone, Stun, and Paralyze. Every class also has skills that have durations (whether buffs or debuffs), and every class can (and usually will) make use of scrolls... which is also affected by your Intelligence score. So every class also wants Intelligence. Oh, Intelligence also increases the AOE of all of these abilities (where applicable) and increases the important Will defense, used to resist dangerous control effects like Charm and Dominate, as well as common debuffs like Frightened. Paladins want Might and Intelligence to increase the size of their auras, make their Lay on Hands heal for more and last for longer (which also heals more), and to increase the duration of their exhortations. Fighters value Might and Intelligence to increase the throughput and duration of their Constant Recovery, increase the duration of their Knock Down and Vigorous Defense, to increase the AOE and duration of their Clear Out. Wizards want that Might to increase the damage of their spells, Priests want Might to increase the healing of that Consecrated Ground and they want Intelligence to increase its AOE and duration, etc. By comparison, almost no one wants CON or RES. Now, it's not usually a good idea to take too many points from them (with RES being more important than CON, unless you're ranged), but investing points into them is usually a bad idea. If you're worried about getting interrupted, just chug a potion of spirit shield. The difference between 10 CON and 14 CON in terms of END and HP isn't substantial enough to justify robbing your MIG and INT scores, and you get Fort bonuses from Might anyway. RES gives you an incredibly small boost to Deflection, making it really not worth the investment. Similarly, Perception gives tiny boosts to ACC and decent boosts to Interrupt... but if you want to interrupt people, just pop a potion of Merciless Gaze to crit more often (because crits always interrupt) or take the Interrupting Blows feat. Dexterity is much more useful, but suffers from diminishing returns to the point that while some DEX is advisable, it's usually better to maximize your INT and MIG instead (for all but a few builds.) I'm just left with the opinion that people who think Pillars' system is at all better than the D&D systems it was built from (3E and beyond, I don't think anyone will argue that 2E is better than what Pillars does) just don't really know that much about it. Like virtually everything else in Obsidian games, it's a solid idea but badly balanced/executed. I think with some love and polish, the Pillars system could be pretty great. But as it stands in Pillars 1, it's pretty lousy. Obviously Obsidian agrees, since it sounds like they have some substantial changes on the docket for Deadfire. I'm interesting to see how they apply lessons learned. Well I can agree with the fact that attributes should have higher influence. But I still like how obsidian managed each attributes area of effect over what you propose. -

I think it makes for an interesting trade off if properly balanced, just wish the strange appearance would generate different social interactions. I live in a. Country and city where my appearance is quite unusual. It of course doesn't reach that level of difference, but still very obviously affects how other people treat me. That's not reflected in game.

I actually have some problems finishing the game as well. I did twin elms after the white march 1 and 2 and thought the quality of twin elms was way worse that what I found at the white march. I have read some reviews complaining that the white march was just more of the same, but for me it was noticeable better than the than game.

A bit off topic, Since we are speaking about how characters looks. As a person with Italian family and nationality, I would really prefer it if the Valians looked like Italians. The way they dress, their culture, the way they speak all is so closely related to renaissance Italians, but ethnically they look african. That always rubs me the wrong way. I know I know, I am terrible. I will go to the bunker to prepare for the following cannon attacks.

So somehow or another physical strength in the Pillars of Eternity universe seems to stand for muscles and spiritual strength. There could be a handwave to this (something like a body-soul interface that requires physical strength to channel the full magical spiritual strength safely or something while mental strength allows one to channel for longer whatever amount of energy ones strength allows to be funneled through the body) but I'm not sure one is ever made in the game. The way i see it is that the power of a person's soul can be channelled as both magic or physical strength. There are differences in muscular physical strength between individuals, but they are minimal in comparison to the differences that channeling your soul power can generate.

Its not very important for me if the racial bonuses are combat balanced. I think too much focus on balance takes away from the role playing experience. Its ok if some races or classes are weaker or stronger than others as long as they feel different. For me the main issue with them was there were so many of them. It really made them seem mundane.

They really are not making much of an effort to keep the hype up. Since the fig campaign finished I haven't read any interviews from the developers or seen any announcements. How are they expecting people that missed the campaign to know they can fund the game if they are not even aware of its existence?
