  1. If you mean like the pinatas in games such as Fortnite, this is almost strictly for free-2-play games that happen to be multiplayer. Either way, it's a horrible gambling systems that people sink money into to get a 0 return 90% of the time. It's worse than paying for cosmetic dlc's. Ah, the halcyon days of last August.
  2. Pillars of Eternity on PC, Assassin's Creed Origins on PS4 Pro.
  3. Gee, why didn't I think of that? I just mean the formatting isn't that bad, and reading it is straightforward.
  4. Edit: Apparently you get automatically upgraded if you own the base game + both parts of the White March so.
  5. Thanks! I keep forgetting this exists You can't take the rpg out of HBS. Nice post but people should really stop posting essays on Twatter. It's annoying. I'm sure the guy had some interesting things to say, but I simply can't stand the formatting. Sorry, dev-dude. I'd really like to read it too -- he worked on the SWTOR F2P transition. He even has a link to his personal blog... but apparently cba to post this there. I feel old. Just read starting from the top and down to the bottom. It's straightforward as heck.
  6. you might be understating a wee bit "Some recent campus actions border on the surreal. In April, at Brandeis University, the Asian American student association sought to raise awareness of microaggressions against Asians through an installation on the steps of an academic hall. The installation gave examples of microaggressions such as “Aren’t you supposed to be good at math?” and “I’m colorblind! I don’t see race.” But a backlash arose among other Asian American students, who felt that the display itself was a microaggression. The association removed the installation, and its president wrote an e-mail to the entire student body apologizing to anyone who was “triggered or hurt by the content of the microaggressions.”" https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2015/09/the-coddling-of-the-american-mind/399356/ and the now (in)famous yale halloween insanity https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/11/the-new-intolerance-of-student-activism-at-yale/414810/ warning: video does get a little sweary just a couple examples. doesn't seem overstated for Gromnir, but am admitted older and have a different pov. the threshold for what we consider offensive speech/actions which demand a response is clear o' a different magnitude than many. to us, there is a ubiquitous problem with oversensitivity. we got free speech and with free speech is a moral responsibility to respond to offensive and hateful speakers. at the same time there must need be a recognition o' the fact that the only speech which requires Constitutional protection is speech which tends to offend. free speech is meaningless if every eggshell fragile listener's feelings must need be accommodated. none o' which has much to do with gender o' avatars in games so... typical we play male, but am kinda flexible 'bout such stuff. is a few games wherein the female avatars simple appeal to our sense o' aesthetics more than the male options. if we wanna see a somewhat stocky adonis, all we need do is look in the mirror, so opting for a female avatar is an infrequent change o' pace. HA! Good Fun! ps added warning... jic sweary triggers folks. Okay, so: I don't know that you're older than me. I remember you from the 90s on Black Isle and possibly Bioware forums. Without revealing our real ages, it seems to me that we're probably similar in age. You didn't demonstrate oversensitivity. You linked a couple things and basically said "See? Oversensitive!" Given that microaggressions (for example) are well known and well understood both academically and in the real world you're going to need a far more substantial argument than "look at this thing! It's an example!" It's not an example of anything but people trying to address real problems they face. Your post is an example of the oversensitivity that I was talking about, though. Are you really so fragile that these things offend you? That you don't even try to understand what they're saying or what's going on?
  7. Nah, the idea of people taking offense at everything is hugely overstated. Oversensitive people see someone object to a thing and freak out because they can't handle that the objection exists, that's all that's happening.
  8. That's definitely on the more extreme (and non-negotiable) end of the issue, if that's the case. To be fair, I had thought his comments were more extreme than they actually are (which are fairly extreme as it is) so I'll retract the Nazi comment. I'm not saying I am convinced he's not a Nazi, just that it is harder to make that argument knowing what he actually said vs. what was reported.
  9. There are varying degrees: for example, some people see the -isms as being a fatal character flaw - the person is irredeemable and not worth interacting with anymore. Alternatively, you could possibly see it as a sad reflection on some of the current problems/differences in and between different parts of society and possibly its (sub)cultures. Instead of immediately cutting that person out of your life and/or treating them like trash because of their views, you could provide a different perspective while backing it up with some sort of reason that appeals to them...so that you might influence their own viewpoint - and if it doesn't do anything, well, you tried. There are also definitely varying "reasons" behind -isms: some fall into the "I have no applicable reasons for my beliefs, and nothing you say is going to change my mind", but a lot of others are more of the "I think there are legitimate issues here with (x)" that a lot of us could probably agree are definitely problems...while making very different conclusions about them, their causes, and the ways to resolve them. You'll probably have an easier time appealing to the latter group with reason than the former, right? Meanwhile, if you yourself remain reasonable, they'll probably have an easier time of being able to bridge the gap in differences of beliefs and respect your viewpoint even when it's contrary to theirs. It's pretty rare that ideologues of any kind are any good at providing a decent discussion - regardless of whether one side is reasonable in their initial assumptions or not. ...I have no idea if any of this is applicable to the thread, because as mentioned before, it is indeed a dumpster fire and I have no wish to go back in. Furthermore, I'm not really one of the "reasonable" types on the internet, but that's mainly because it almost always feels like a total waste of time...but that's more about my own lack of patience and virtue than anything else. I am a little better in real life with these sorts of things, and I'm sure the same probably goes for most people when dealing with people we personally know. I took this to the other thread so better to discuss it there. A short answer in two parts: Part #1 is that this is in reference to that one guy's views as he posted them on RPG Codex. Part #2 is that I am not really moved much by centrist arguments to see both sides of an argument when one side of that argument involves the insistent dehumanization of and possible calls of violence against people because of their race, gender, orientation, etc. Shorter version: I don't see any room for common ground with Nazis.
  10. Gromnir, When you say they see nothing wrong with "blank" the blank in question is racism and sexism. They see nothing wrong with racism and sexism. What exactly is the middle ground between being racist and sexist and being against racism and sexism? Why should there be a middle ground? Is there anything at all redeemable about racism or sexism, or arguments in favor of either? What is the reasonable discussion that involves compromise to allow for racism and sexism? Note: I removed the "don't be misleading" comment because I do not believe Gromnir is actually trying to mislead. So apologies for that. kdubya: Yes, they do. The opinions in question, however, are not simply "distasteful to some." That's a serious understatement. The person in question expressed hatred and disdain for entire groups of people, such as black women. That goes a bit beyond "distasteful" and directly into racism and misogyny. If a company doesn't want to endorse racist or misogynist views, then they would be well-served to take some action.
  11. They aren't all bad but that thread was pretty terrible is funny on a certain level. 1/2 posters saying they see nothing wrong with ______. other half saying you gotta be blind to not see the wrong. complete absence o' any middle ground where reasonable discussion can take place. unintended hilarity ensues. When you say they see nothing wrong with "blank" the blank in question is racism and sexism.
  12. Or perhaps you misjudge the value some place on cute butts... Seriously though, I iknow in some P&P games - particularly when other players were re-creating their idealized selves, not doing so raised eyebrows. Heck, it happened in non-RPGs too - I still remember a guy, when Street Fighter II came out, taking some ribbing (good natured and not) because he chose to specialize in Chun-Li. I've heard the excuse so many times over the past twenty years that I am simply incapable of taking it seriously as anything but a hasty assurance that the dude in question is totally straight, guys, honest. That's not meant to imply that they're not straight, just that they are very insistent on making sure everyone knows they're Straighty McStraightStraight.
  13. I prefer to play female characters and for a time I was completely uninterested in RPGs that forced you to play a male character. Now I am only mostly uninterested. Also, I think the sheer number of guys using the "I want to stare at a cute butt" excuse is silly. All this "no homo" is also silly.
  14. So like I'm sure you'd call me an SJW (with all the misunderstanding applying that label entails) and I've been around since Black Isle. I'm not unique. Not that there's any indication that anyone pressured Obsidian to fire the guy, or that Obsidian pressured the guy to quit. So you think guy should have been fired for his opinions ? I said nothing of the sort. However, I think people should be careful about what they espouse in public, and should they espouse racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, transphobic stuff in public, they (and their supporters) should be neither surprised nor aggrieved when there are consequences. That doesn't necessarily translate to "I think the guy should have been fired." It does translate to "His departure in light of this information does not surprise or aggrieve me." Free speech is nice but there is no freedom from consequences for that speech. He chose to be openly racist and sexist. No one compelled him to do it. No one held a gun to his head and forced him to write those posts. The choice to do so is entirely on him. Also, as a point of clarification, my post was not actually about whether this guy should have been fired or whether he should have quit or whatever the heck happened because who knows what happened? Not anyone in this thread. My post was simply to point out that "yes, in fact, people who might be called SJWs are gamers and fans of Obsidian." We're not on the outside looking in, we've been here all along. Even given my progressive politics I am a Deadfire backer, and I've been playing Obsidian's games since before it was Obsidian. Since people worked for Black Isle Studio and made Fallout.

  16. Nah, they need to keep making TES games. And I guess Fallout too.
  17. So I haven't been playing Horizon Zero Dawn for a bit. Instead I upgraded my video card and monitor, and started checking out games with the new hardware. All was well until I got to Skyrim SE, which will only run at 12-15 FPS. For comparison, Fallout 4 runs at 60. I've tried every solution I can find online and none have worked. So annoying.
  18. Nah, the other Dooms had story and objectives. The story was pretty barebones and the objective was to make it through all the levels and kill the final boss. Not that your point is invalid.
  19. The three power restriction was fine in multiplayer but yeah, totally not needed in single player.
  20. I much prefer the over the top violence of Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom, and the new Doom. I enjoyed Doom 3 but it wasn't really a Doom game, you know?
  21. Aside from Runic making it, why exactly is Hob worth getting?
  22. That's unfortunate. What I read online said it should last for 8-9 hours, and up to 12 hours if you do all the side stuff.
  23. I'm playing Horizon Zero Dawn, which is very pretty on an HDR-capable television.
