What annoyed you about KOTOR's plot?
Nur Ab Sal replied to Ivan the Terrible's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
I've already told how I think the correct storyline should look: devs shouldn't waste their time on some Revan/memory flashback/redemption stuff. Instead you should play young Jedi padawan with great potential (like Anakin in AOTC) that can become great hero or great villain (like Anakin did). It would be more fun to have truly customized hero, not the one who was customized by the devs. -
At last great Exar Kun enters the stage.

What is your least favorite character?

Bao Dur - interesting name but I hate zabraks Mira - just another cliched chick, redhaired (which is really bad), ugly-named and she'll never replace Bastila (Atris maybe, but not Mira) -

Ulic Qel Droma was similar hero but his redemption was painful and thus convincing. Sorry I understand limits of a video game but Revan's redemption is crappy. It could be shown better. It is impossible. And that's why devs shouldn't waste their time on some Revan/memory flashback/redemption stuff. And yet when you choose DS ending his new personality proves to be a joke, and a true Revan is revealed. I admit that this whole concept is interesting, the problem is that Revan is very undeveloped character, in contradiction to NPCs. Becouse their personal redemption was long and convincing and they were never treated as heroes again. And Revan is treated as a hero. His way to regain position as a galactic hero is quick and easy and it should be long and difficult. Not just killing Malak and destroying starforge junk. -

This is a question of social responsibility. The fact that someone lost his memory shouldn't mean that he is innocent. Tell it to the victims of the Revan's scourge. I think that they wouldn't understand celebrations that Jedi Council prepared for Revan. And even if Revan himself forgot everything there are witnesses, holonet news from the frontlines and galaxy in general remembers that war. So in time he would learn about his past much more. -

Agreed. It should be included in the cutscenes. Besides road to redemption is always very tough one. Ulic Qel Droma commited similar crimes and it took him 10 years to gain forgiveness, Kyp Durron also struggled for years to recover from his sith past and Republic always treated him as a scum (even when he became member of the Jedi Council). And here we have Revan who only kills Malak and becouse of that entire Jedi Council bows before him. It was very naive, really I didn't feel any redemption and depth of Revan's complicated fate. It was just crappy. "Oh Revan you have killed billions of people and almost wiped out the Republic and the Jedi, but in the end you also killed Malak and you are our hero!" This makes no sense. -
Actually in Tales of the Jedi, most of Exar Kun's followers were aliens from very different species (even if Exar held a grudge against the Cathars). So the EU never actually shown Sith as racists (Palpatine was only exception but he has litle common with ancient sith). In KOTOR it would be a problem to present 40-50 different types of aliens that were shown in Tales of the Jedi without overwhelming xbox limited abilities. That's why you can ba under impression that Sith were racist. Remember that Uthar Wynn himself was member of some near-human race becouse he commented Revan's humanity like it was something curious to him.

Yeah and Anakin exists both in the movies and in the EU... we aren't speaking about his image in the movies, we speak about his image in general. I believe that Hayden's performance will be much better in EIII. Hamill in New Hope was even more pathetic than Hayden in AOTC, and yet later he improved his acting. -

Well to me EU is relevant and compared with the movies gives us convincing vision of the downfall. Man I hate such stupid quarrels about EU... PS if EU is irrelevant why did you play KOTOR? It is EU as well. -

If I knew from the beginning that I'm a villain - not. But I was expecting to make a Jedi career in that game and thus playing fmr Dark Lord is rather annoying to me. It just doesn't fit into game concept well. If title is Knights of the Old Republic I should play hero with a clear, gentle past. In Revenge of the Sith on the other hand I'll play a role of a villain and I know about it. But in case of KOTOR my expectations were just different. -

Yes but Exar was always portraited as a baddie, never as a hero! I like Exar same way I like Vader but I don't feel that ethics is twisted in their case: they are indeed villains even if they're so cool. In case of Revan I don't feel comfortable playing a role of a war criminal. As I said before I'd prefer to play ordinary character with carte blanche It is like playing a role of a former nazi leader or something like that! -

Yeah everybody worships Revan but nobody remembers that he killed more people than Hitler. -

Running all the time for star maps was vey annoying. When I was waiting for the game I expected some war, military operations, espionage, complex storyline. And I got a mediocre storyline with same scheme all the time: you arrive at planet T/K/M and have to solve one quest in order to get starmap. This was boooring. And game lacks real RPG choices: on the Leviathan you should have at least time limit to escape, before malak arrives. And Bastila's concept was all stupid, like devs couldn't decide what they really wanted. First they jumped with feminist cliche of female heroine full of greatness, later they trashed her, someone blackmailed them or what? I don't understand. I hoped also that I'll have chance to play as ordinary Jedi who will eventually became a hero. Devs surprised me completely with crappy story of a brainwashed sith superman who is soooo strong that one starts wondering how he could let himself be brainwashed... no the weakest point of KOTOR is story of Revan. This story is just crappy. Not as interesting and convincing as Anakin's downfall/redemption or Exar Kun's seduction, it plays on teenager's lowest feeling: desire to be strongest thug in a college. And that's why Revan is so popular. Howewer I'm deeply disappointed becouse I'm too old and it's just pissing me off when all around me say how great I am (and in KOTOR it's standard) and this Revan Plot destroys my character's development - all the time I had to play with hero that already has his own story and name. I wouldn't mind if I could play just nameless hero like in Neverwinter Nights. This would be much better... -
Hmm you have a good point but on the other hand Exar Kun in the beginning of his "career" was commenting that he "wasn't on the darkside" that he "only had scientific curiosity" etc. and we know how he ended - as a full-fledged master of the Dark Side. Kyp was at the beginner's phase, when not all good was killed in him by the flowing darkness. A little longer, and he would start to be same baddie as Exar. I think that even if his sith career was very short (he was saved by Han in the last moment practically) he already shown typical signs of a Dark Apprentice (and the scheme was classical - he was seduced by an ancient spirit like Exar Kun who was seduced by the Freedon Nadd, this was often method of creating new Sith). I was always stunned how his thoughts were similar to Exar's reactions in "Dark Lords of he Sith" comic, shortly before he really began to embrace darkness fully.
-
Actually Kyp was apprentice of Exar Kun and Dark Lord's apprentice is always considered as a sith lord. The same you can say that Exar Kun wasn't sithlord only dark jedi becouse he "just tapped" into ancient magic. GOA with that logic half of all sithlords, weren't sithlords at all. Besides in his time there was no one who could challenge him in force potential. He declared himself a Sith on Endor, and no one could do anything with that. Laozi's comment is typical (Laozi you have sam attitude as Kyp BTW) but I admit that I like that character (he's second favourite after Corran Horn) as one of only few characters of the crappy postROTJ era. At least he kicks vong asses in NJO as a starfighter commander. And never even pretended to be gentle-ideal-alwaysmiled-altruistic jedi looser. I like that in him.

Does it mean that Zalbaar is a full party member again? -
Actually they cost the same as any other dark horse comic (10$) and they are more worthy than most star wars novels. When I compare Republic series to what wriiiters write on Clone Wars I can say that only two clone wars novels can stand such comparison: Shatterpoint and Cestus Deception. Rest is dull Really Haden Blackman is far better editor than Sue Rostoni that has ego bigger than entire Mid-East (ever tried to talk with that windbag on official site?)

George Lucas was responsible for this idea in first versions of ANH script. The shadow of this you have, when Kenobi says that Jedi existed for 1000 generations (25000 years)

You know that's why I like Tales of the Jedi so much. Anderson took very little from the movies and created his own original and remarkable vision of Star Wars (yeah I know that you'll use word "lame") with its own characters, technology, conflicts and lore. The good example to prove your opinion is Michael Stackpole and his X-Wing series that, on the other hand, took almost everything from the movies and is very un-original and boring You can always buy in Amazon
