So you are talking about dialoge that is actually NOT spoken (but read by the gamer)?
-
AFAIK it's only the premade companions who may occasionally interject if/when something being discussed is especially important to them (perhaps important enough to make them stay or leave depending on the conversation choice being made). So I don't think you are going to have any control on what they have to say or manipulating their stats to accomplish X or Y. Not sure I understand the part about Jahiera speaking with Charnames voice either - she has her own voice if when she adds her two cents??
-
Perhaps that could be rectified by simply adding the Pcs name to the dialoge tree? (I assume the companions will be identified by name when they choose to chime in already - otherwise how would we know who is speaking) This may already be the plan and just not implemented in the beta?
-
I agree that having the PC conduct the conversation (using his skill, factions, reputation, etc) while allowing another character to run over to start the ball rolling is better than dragging the PC toe to toe to whomever he is talking to (from a strategy standpoint). I also seem to recall that in the finished game your companions (not adventurers) may have something to offer during the conversation as well but the details of how this may occur has not been laid out AFAIK.

One issue I am having with the wizard is not enough spells that can target one single enemy - it seems to me that almost everything is an area effect and even tho most of them are relatively small areas with combat as it is now I still can't find a way to use them without attacking my own comrades (and almost none seem to be enemy only). Mostly I use the occasional opening salvo then let them use their rod. Pretty ineffective over all... Disclaimer - I'm not really much into playing wizard types so I may just be doing it wrong
-
Seems to be, although we haven't seen a whole lot of levels yet. You can change the spell loadout at any time (although if you do it during combat, you'll lose the ability to cast. Not sure for how long. I think until after combat ends). Oh I figured it was like a D&D mage or Sorcerer and you had to rest to replenish??
-
So I can cast as many spells per level as my character level permits but I am limited to 4 spell choices to work from? Is that regardless of caster level?
-
So why can I only choose 1 MM if I can choose 2 Fireballs (same level)
-
I am wondering about this - I have not played a PC wizard yet (my least favorite class) but when trying to choose spells for BB wizards Grimoire I noticed some spells seem to be restricted - you can't choose to put as many as you wish in their given space. Two spells that act this way: 3rd Level "magic missle" (I forget the proper PoE name for it) - I can only "learn" one of these - no matter if I clear all four spaces it will only allow me to place one MM 3rd Level Fireball - I can only learn two of these - again no matter how many open slots I have the game only allows me to place 2. My question would be - does anyone know if this is by design or a bug?

...within the constraints set by the designers, who set the constraints based on their ideas of what's fun or reasonable or what not. This is the part that's confusing me about you humans. Some of you act as if the game was not an artificial construct. I know we've fooled most of you into believing the physical world with its laws isn't, but it ought to be pretty obvious that a game world is. And that the 'laws of nature' in that game world have been created based on the creators' ideas of fun. Meaning that they also consider what's not fun and try to minimize the amount of that in the world. Wait the world of PoE isn't real?

I don't think it's as cut and dried when it comes to RP decisions - the druid may be the protector of nature but that doesn't have to mean that they do not use nature for food, clothing , medicine, etc. we have no knowledge of how rare or prevalent dragons are or whether or not removing a dragon and nest from an area as close to town like this might be considered the proper thing for a druid to participate in. In short when it comes to RP positions really no one but the individual player can really make the case of whether or not certain in game actions by their character is or is not considered an "exploit".

Pumping MIGHT, CON, and DEX? You're playing it wrong!
wanderon replied to Ink Blot's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I think you are correct that you need to pump those stats to be "the diplomat" and get to use all those extra conversation options but I'm not sure that means you can't still be a viable Paladin, fighter, barbarian type. Obviously you can't be as "strong" as one who dumps the diplomat line but I'm getting the feeling from the beta that a character with middle of the road stats may still be quite viable. -
Josh Sawyer on the "naked ranged characters" issue

My ex and I did it all the time.... well before she became my ex... -
I have to agree with Sarex tbh. There are a few threads where stuff gets a bit out of control and there are arguments, but it's usually always started by the same 10 or so people. Pretty much everyone else has been pretty good regarding feedback about the game in this section of the forum. Perhaps you simply just disagree with the majority of opinions or something. It's not opinions that raise my blood pressure it's the manner in which they are often presented - you sir are one of the few voices of reason who consistently present your ideas calmly and thoroughly and yet are obviously passionate about the direction in which you would like to see this game go - I may not agree with everything you present but I am often swayed to your points simply because they are so well presented. Thank you for all you bring to the table here!

That is simply not happening, 90% of the people are offering constructive criticism. There are people who like to call out Josh, but never to call him stupid (which he is obviously not), only stubborn and sometimes arrogant. The bigger problem here is your perception of the criticism and people attacking people who have something negative to say. We must be reading different threads...

I'm all for discussion but see no reason why negative impressions of the game need to be stated in the angry, arrogant, the devs are freaking idiots, manner that pepper the conversations in every game forum I have ever participated in; nor in the MMO "he who shouts the loudest for the longest wins" style; nor the high school/university debate team style with the participants acting as their own judges pointing out the failed debate styles of their nemesis. That of course leaves me very little to appreciate when it comes to scrolling through the forums but sadly it's the only place to learn more about these games so I mostly suffer through it and try not to worry about the rising blood pressure...

They should make it so it turns it off when the combat state starts ... p. simple I also would like passive mechanics checking when not in stealth (works when idle) and only when moving in stealth. So if it turns off when combat starts then you can't choose to search for traps in that area while your comrades are fighting off the enemy? I seem to recall areas in the IE games where battle zones were trapped - BG final battle for one.

Pre-Made Adventurers/Pseudo-Companions
wanderon replied to Lasweetlife's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I doubt they will enable the game to make a new character file for each level a PC gets to but as long as we have some sort of export ability there would be no reason the gamer could not do so. I did this in ID2 and then used the resulting characters in No reload no raise dead games to replace fallen party members with randomized choices from previous PCs at about the same level. -
I don't have an issue with the "two legged" form vs the animal form but I think it could be scaled down to something closer to human in size the current size seems pretty over the top.
-
I think it depends on your motivation to play the beta - I had originally planned not to play the beta because I didn't want to be spoiled and was pleased when they announced it had been designed specifically not to spoil anything in the main storyline and to have minimal spoilage in other aspects. My goal in playing the beta is to get a handle on the games mechanics - character creation and generally using it as a tutorial so when the actual game arrives I will have a clear understanding of classes and mechanics & be ready to play it right out of the box and thus far it seems to be working as planned. Thanks Obsidian!

Second impressions thread! [Build 278 version]
wanderon replied to Tartantyco's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I think a lot of stuff is being a little over simplified too - (as usual ) - the idea that everyone but the tank can be naked for instance - call me crazy but I'm betting somewhere along the way we are going to see enemies flanking us and/or showing up at our rear and where will all those naked souls be then - (lying on the ground I suspect). I think it's a good idea for folks to crunch the numbers and show where stuff can be tweaked but I also think it's a good idea that folks set the numbers aside and just build what seems to be a decent character (or even a mediocre one) and play the game as if the numbers didn't matter and see how THAT feels. Sadly I won't be able to do that again until Sunday Meanwhile carry on! -

Second impressions thread! [Build 278 version]
wanderon replied to Tartantyco's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Thumbs up over all - lots of improvement! Still some weirdness with items - saved and reloaded and anyone who had a large shield in weapon slot was now surf-boarding on it (out of combat) - eventually solved by selling the shields No leftover/respawning loot bags but shield/grimoire combo showed up on floor by the bar at the inn - just sitting there can't interact with it. Leftover from last build - don't know if it's a bug or a feature - BB wizard cannot learn more than 1 level 3 "magic missle" can't learn more than 2 fireballs (clicking on them to add them to an open spell slot does nothing once 1 missle or 2 fireballs have been put in.
