Yes, It's a horrible idea If an Item is good enough to purchase, It's probably good enough to remember Well this is just a nonsensical non-argument. There are loads of unique items scattered around which you might want to buy but can't afford. If you enjoy keeping track of that type of thing, you must have a high tolerance for tedium. I know that I don't agree with you. Yes, it's a bit of a pain, but I like that pain because the idea of a "consolidated" merchant sounds so damned silly to me. It's not unprecedented. See the Normandy store on ME3, where you could buy items from all other stores at a mark-up.

Penetration Mod
Rooksx replied to Phenomenum's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire: Modding (Spoiler Warning!)
I was initially using the under/overpen scaling version of this mod. Sidebar - I don’t care if it’s realistic or not, it makes sense within the mechanics of the game that you get a bonus for over-pen. Anyway, that version makes overall damage increase. This seemed fine for a while, but I started to get concerned that Maia (as a Scout dual-wielding mortars) was OP due to the damage increase. She was by far the biggest damage dealer in my party, approaching twice the damage of my Watcher Arcane Knight (albeit a Kind Wayfarer). So I transitioned to this version and am really liking it. Maia is still effective, but not overwhelmingly so. I think the +50% Crit damage is really important because it’s frequently the case that crits happen without the Pen doubling AR. With the standard +25% Crit, I suspect overall damage would be too low to overcome multiple sources of healing. Those experiences also illustrate why changes to mechanics don’t equally affect the player and the computer. Enemy mobs aren’t dual-wielding mortars (such a reliable source of AoE damage, which is more important than single target damage), and don’t use healing as effectively as the player. Generally, the player can be expected to make better use of resources and the mechanics than mobs. -
So on the Torkar fight, I led my party up a nearby ramp onto a nearby platform. This worked well in preventing me from being overwhelmed by blocking the ramp. It worked less well in that I was unable to fire, throw grenades, cast spells or do anything to the mobs on the ground without moving down the ramp, which I obviously couldn't do. Meanwhile all those sharpshooters on the ground were able to cheerfully fire up at my party on the platform. How does that make sense? This reminds me of that really annoying bit in Longwatch Falls White March where the fish-people fire down at you from an elevated position, but you can't fire back from where you are.

Suspect few will agree with me, but I’d like merchants to be consolidated so that once you’ve visited one, you can buy their items at any other merchant. There are so many merchants selling unique items who are scattered all over the place in Deadfire. Trying to keep track of who is selling what, then travelling around to buy stuff, is a tedious pain in the arse. It may not be realistic but so what, you shouldn’t have to rely on a wiki to figure out where to buy items.

So I tried the Oathbinder Sanctum fight again with this new version of the mod. Managed to beat it this time, although that could partly be due to finding a chokepoint on the map. The fight took a long time as damage output from everyone was obviously a lot lower, plus they've got a bunch of healers. I think overall it was easier than with the underpen/overpen scaling version of the mod because the enemy isn't getting overpen bonuses all the time, so can't kill me so quickly. I guess the main question is: who benefits more from overall lower damage - the player or enemy mobs? I do wonder if this mod could make high health characters too strong.

So I'm also playing with Deadly Deadfire (Lite). The Oathbinder Sanctum fight is very difficult with a level 9 party. The overpen scaling means that the enemy rogues always get an ovepen bonus. Deadly Deadfire's level scaling compounds that as their accuracy is so high that they crit a lot, which leads to them hitting the max 30% overpen bonus. The more fragile members of my party do not live long under these conditions. Generally speaking, the overscaling pen has made me rethink party composition. I don't have a proper tank, and I think I need one. Building Serafen as a dual-wielding DPS Witch has been problematic because he just takes too much damage. I don't think there's much space for DPS builds with weak defences, at least not until you get enchanted heavy armour.

I'm using the version that scales for under and over pen, playing on PotD. I'm not a theorycrafter and this is only my first playthrough, so I can only comment on how it 'feels' rather than offering any detailed mechanical discussion. So far it's been good - the combat remains challenging, some fights may actually be more difficult because enemies get damage bonuses when their pen exceeds but does not double my AR. On the flipside, I get a damage bonus when that situation is reversed. I like that abilities that raise my AR by a small amount are now always useful instead of only having an effect if they cause my AR to hit the threshold points. I haven't got high AR armours yet, so right now enemy pen is more likely to exceed my AR. Once I do get better armour, it's possible that the mod will make things easier compared to the vanilla position. I don't know what the typical difference is between enemy pen and my AR in later stages of the game.

Pathfinder Kingmaker is bigger then Deadfire
Rooksx replied to no1fanboy's topic in Computer and Console
So does Dex in Pathfinder work the same way as in NWN/NWN2 - only applies to the attack bonus if you've got weapon finesse and are using a light weapon, no increase to damage? Are there no feats that let you add Dex to damage? That was always one of the silly things about the NWN games. -
Why is Badgradr's Barricade better offensively than Dragon's Maw? Less crush damage and Thrust of Tattered Veils is only once per encounter.

Yes, these melee builds intentionally dump DEX, because they were created to endure damage and utilize passives/pulse abilities (Chanter = Dragon Thrashed, Paladin = Sacred Immolation, etc.). The "normal" melee attacks should be viewed as an added benefit, while the primary damage comes from the passive abilities/pulse-attacks. I get the reasoning for the Chanter and Paladin, but how does the Barbarian contribute other than by hitting people?

I'm going to use a mod to respect companion's attributes, so what would be the optimal stats for this build? Max MIG and PER, 17 INT, 10 CON and RES, dump DEX? Or maybe it's better to rely on Zealous Focus so that you can reduce PER to 12 and increase DEX to 10.

Typically I don't either but since this is a game I've invested in and the guy actually knows what he's talking about, I found it pretty insightful.Edit: It also helps that he doesn't seem too biased, well not enough to leave out the cons anyway Edit 2: This is a positive Steam review by the way... (so nobody thinks this is negative review.) That's my point, I don't think he does know what he's talking aboutI'm guessing you didn't read the review then?If you did, what part gave you the impression that he doesn't know what he's talking about? I'm just genuinely curious. Flowery, poetic words do not a good review make. It's a much more considered, thoughtful piece than your posts in this thread. Just because you don't like what the reviewer's saying, that doesn't mean he doesn't know what he's talking about. Strange, I wasn't aware I'd made a review in this thread, oh well. There's nothing considered or thoughtful about what the reviewer wrote. Where did I say that you wrote a review? Merely pointed out that your posts are devoid of any reasoning or content. You can prove me wrong by elaborating on why you think it’s a bad review.
