Future performance improvements aside, I think you should also focus a bit on the cooling of your laptop. This really looks like it's running too hot due to some issue with the cooling system. Make sure the fans/exhausts are clean and unobstructed. Cleaning the fans of a laptop can often work wonders. There are also external laptop coolers available for a few bucks. I've never used one, but allegedly they can help quite a bit.

EI Mod and my opinions
El Zoido replied to Mdalton31's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I checked a save of mine. Boots of Stability have the "Sturdy" attribute, which specifically gives +20 defense against attacks that cause prone and +15 against push. While I agree that specific immunities against certain spells would be better when it makes sense, it stills seems preferable to e.g. slicken causing drakes or other flying enemies (or oozes for that matter) to fall over. -
EI Mod and my opinions
El Zoido replied to Mdalton31's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Humm... hey, maybe you're right. I was kind of assuming that it'd be possible to give higher resistances (and therefore also immunities) to specific status effects at least, e.g. Prone. I don't think it'd be necessary to distinguish between, say, Slicken and Knockdown for this to work; just have some enemies which can't be Blinded, Paralyzed, or Prone'd. If the system really doesn't allow for that then yeah, that does need fixing. I may gbe wrong, but aren't there e.g. some items that give increased defenses against certain status effects, especially "prone"? If so, that sounds as if they do have a system in place to specifically defend against status effects. A drake could be then given +200 defense vs prone and all attacks that would cause prone would be converted into misses. -
EI Mod and my opinions
El Zoido replied to Mdalton31's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Some enemies seem to like avoiding your tanks (e.g. Fampyrs for some reason always run around my tanks and right at my squishies) and I think that those fights are generally pretty interesting. Suddenly you need to decide whether you a) suck it up and hope that your squishies survive long enough for your fighters to mop up the other enemies or your other characters to kill them or b) disengage your fighters to attack the fampyr, with the danger of making even more enemies slip past unless you hold them down somehow. Fampyrs also charm your characters, which can pose some risk as well (although some other enemies are better at it). I would generally reduce the efficiency of tanks a bit by reducing health and defenses, as well as giving more enemies the ability to break up the standard patterns a bit (as the flanking and charming fampyrs sometimes manage). -
Just spotted a small issue with placement of some asset in Brighhollow. After restoring the kitchen area to the left of the entrance, there are two lit, wall-mounted candlesticks flanking the door to the kitchen. The right candlestick is still tilted however, resulting in three small candle flames hovering in the air were the candlestick would be if it wasn't turned by ~45° counterclockwise. Nothing major, but maybe it can be fixed in a patch eventually.

I hope it will anyway be fixed in an upcoming patch, but at least in Linux it can be fixed by starting the game in a terminal with LANG=C ./start.sh That forces Linux to use the default locale for the game, which prevents some internal calculations from going haywire due to using a different locale that uses different notation for the decimal point in numbers (as e.g. german does). The same issue is also responsible for wrong water levels and inflated prices after getting an discount in some shops. For Windows users it might help to set the in-game language to english (not sure though).

[Bug] Additional Weapon Sets Dissappeared!
El Zoido replied to L233's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
I encountered a similar issue today. Playing on 1.03.530 (GOG version). I had given Edér the Arms Bearer talent and equipped him with a 3rd weapon. For a while it worked as expected, but today he had lost his 3rd weapon slot. I was able to fix it by dismissing and rehiring him, but I have no idea why it happened at all. I'm relatively sure that I never equipped anything by double-clicking and anyway that bug should be fixed, shouldn't it? -
I had a topic on the issue a few days ago and there was one answer where it was suggested that it's connected to the localization of your OS: http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/72665-black-hammer-smithery-inflated-prices-and-cloaks-missing-linux/ While I'm playing in English, my system is using German settings for numbers/date/etc. which means e.g. that numbers are using a comma instead of the decimal point used in english (1.02=1,02). This seems to be responsible for an issue I had in Ondra's Gift, which was completely submersed in water until I started PoE with the additional expression 'LANG=C' ('LANG=C ./start.sh' in a terminal) However, I have tested if it would help against the price inflation, which it unfortunately doesn't. Prices are still much too high for me...

Game BSODs on inventory screen
El Zoido replied to BLAM-O!'s question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
BSODs can be a bit tricky. My reccomendation is to get a BSOD viewing tool (e.g. Bluescreenview), which should help you to analyze the error dump. You may especially want to look at the error code and then look it up on the net. Sometimes this already points you into the right direction (e.g. faulty drivers or faulty memory). If it's the drivers, good luck finding the right one. I once had BSODs due to installing some driver for some relatively minor component and only identified the cause because I remembered that the crashes only started around the time I had done the installation. If it's probably memory, get e.g. memtest86+, which is also included in many Linux live-CDs and thoroughly test your memory (may take several hours). Also log your temps while you are playing, just to make sure it's not overheating. -
ETA on early April patch?
El Zoido replied to Plenum's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
I do like GOG for a lot of things, but in regard to patching new games, they are not exactly fast. Actually they are pretty slow. Unless things have improved considerably in the last year, end of next week wouldn't be surprising either, sadly... -
I've yet to reach even chapter 2, so disregard anything I say if it's uninformed nonsense, but unless chapter 2 and 3 are significantly shorter the XP gain might need to be reduced to prevent hitting the level cap too soon. It should also keep the challenge for a longer time. The first level up can be gained relatively fast (for motivation and stuff), and then the speed should slow down. This could also be done just by adjusting the XP thresholds needed for a level up, without having to alter any quest XP.
-
I switched from normal to hard after I had some experience with the systems and don't find hard extremely challenging either, most of the time. Of course there's the stat bug (I'm mildly affected, Edér has 10 points od deflection that are unaccounted for) that might play a role for some people, too. But ultimately it's hard to balance a game like this properly, I think. You are pretty free to go where you want and there's a lot of side content to earn XP from. Making it equally challenging for people that mostly focus on the MQ and those that do a completionist run will be almost impossible. OTOH still better than full level scaling, imo.

Rogues Escape talent broken?
El Zoido replied to Striped_Wolf's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
Not only no fix if I read it correctly, but actually a nerf? The ability seems broken as is, it should be fixed first before we start to adjust it. OTOH, maybe they did fix it along the way? -
Obsidian, why isn't there any hotfix yet?
El Zoido replied to Jazou's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
So I guess hosting a small incremental patch yourselves is out of question for technical reasons and we will a) have to wait for GOG and b) hope that they offer an incremental patch instead of requiring us to download the entire 6+GB again? P.S.: Nice list, keep up the good work! -
Obsidian, why isn't there any hotfix yet?
El Zoido replied to Jazou's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
Nvm... Anyway, I hope GOG is a bit faster this time around. Didn't they want to fix it through their Galaxy client by now? -
I feel offended do you?
El Zoido replied to a question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
Offended is too much, imo. I do understand how someone might feel a bit annoyed by some of the bugs, though. Not buying games directly after release and not pre-ordering is anyway a good advice unless you know the risks and/or have a reasonably good idea of what you'll get. But hey, they have released a pretty good game and make an effort to fix the worst offenders (d'oh) quickly. -
Installation Problem
El Zoido replied to saurus's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
I can only repeat to use google and search around a bit, e.g. I found this within 30s: From what I also found, it's probably best to first delete the game's local content through Steam. Then try the bolded, underlined suggestion first, replace the directories with those of your Steam installation and DVD drive. Other suggestions I found are to completely shut down Steam before starting the installation (might not work as it will likely just start up Steam again) and/or disconnect from the net. Of course you will still need to download the day0 patch afterwards... -
Obsidian, why isn't there any hotfix yet?
El Zoido replied to Jazou's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
The bugs are pretty annoying and some of them potentially game-breaking. Still, patches can take time if they are supposed to work right, especially with complex games. And since I got the game on GOG, I've personally given up my hopes of getting the patch before the Easter holidays. GOG unfortunately takes ages until they release patches (I don't blame Obsidian for this). -
Rogues Escape talent broken?
El Zoido replied to Striped_Wolf's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
Yes, Escape doesn't seem to work very well for me either. I think I may have used it once or twice with some success, but most of the time, it fails. And even if it would work correctly, it should a) activate faster and b) have an increased range. -
Installation Problem
El Zoido replied to saurus's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
Hm, I remember some similar issues with, I think, Fallout New Vegas. It would start on the DVD and then try to download a lot of data from the net. While I did have a flatrate, DVD was much faster than my connection at the time, so I wanted to use the DVD instead. AFAIK there was a way to prevent the downloading from Steam, most likely by putting Steam into offline mode at the right time or disconnecting whatever you use to connect with the net. You could try searching for how to install Fallout 3/New Vegas from DVD, maybe that turns up something helpful? -
Thank you for the clarification! I checked it out and it does seem to work. Shouldn't be too difficult to fix for the devs, too. Only other thing I encountered during the whole thing is that the water shaders on Linux look a bit strange (the dark parts in the waves towards the right of my screenshot do not seem to appear in Windows), but I guess that's a different issue.
