  1. No, that movie proved without a doubt that an adaptation should be just that, adapted, and not straight up copied. The pacing doesn't work. Its scene-to-scene loyalty makes the movie an incredibly boring slog to sit through. I have literally used it as a sleep aid when I have insomnia. This despite the fact that I love the comic book, which is essentially the same in most places.
  2. Watched Age of Ultron which was... what I expected. Fun, but not groundbreaking. Couple of odd moments, couple of awesome moments. It's a great movie yet it feels a bit lacking because it doesn't live up to its promise, despite all the things it did deliver.
  3. So what you're saying is it extends to men too, but it just happens to women more because of gender roles keeping women in that position of weakness where they have to attract men for their life to have meaning. Because I think I'm seeing a root cause here.
  4. Wait, so women suffer in war because they lose the men in their lives? That sounds remarkably like her worth is intrinsically tied to what men she has in her life. I thought THAT was the sexism that we've been fighting against for generations - the idea that women must attract men to have worth.
  5. The problem with Watchmen is that it's too loyal to the comic book, ironically. The pacing that works for a comic book is not neccesarily the pacing that works for a movie and Watchmen proved that. I'd much rather have seen a movie loyal to the spirit of the comic book than one to the letter.
  6. Currencies have crashed overnight before?
  7. Greenlight is a disaster not just for indie devs but the consumer as well. It's the way that awful **** that was thrown together with blatantly stolen art assets and music gets onto Steam. Steam used to be a place where you would get quality. Not anymore. Steam no longer cares about their reputation. Everybody already has a massive game library there - nobody's going to abandon it if they **** up.
  8. Try PMing the Community Manager, Fionavar. http://forums.obsidian.net/user/49-fionavar/ This forum should adopt this rule. From the forum guidelines: Alternative Accounts: At the present moment there is some tolerance for the use of alt accounts. Such use, however, remains dependent on the appropriateness of such accounts. If an alt is used in an infraction of any of the Forum Guidelines that account will be removed and the member who created will be censured. Furthermore, the use of an alt that is used by more than one member is strictly prohibited. Such accounts will be immediately disabled and all members will be censured accordingly. I won't get into specific people, but we are aware of most alts and any alt that breaks those rules is likely to get banned. Additionally, as someone with access to IP and history, I notice most of the time we see or get messages complaining about how certain accounts are "obviously" trolling alts when as far as we can tell they are completely on the level. That, or they are extremely thorough and possess enormous dedication in their backstories, proxy IP resolution use and years of verifiable internet history. Even if we had a blanket ban on alts, the people most often accused would pass the test with flying colors.
  9. Get well soon Tale. Flu and similar always sucks. I just had a new car battery installed since ours just up and died out of nowhere. I was already broke, so now I'm in the foulest of moods and I'm going to take it out on some Left 4 Dead zombies.
  10. I played through roughly 99% of Amnesia...man, a while ago. Four years back, maybe? Then I reformatted for some reason or another, and forgot to keep my saves. I never saw the ending, as I couldn't make myself go through certain parts again. I did play through and beat Penumbra rather recently, though, which is pretty similar. Isn't this more appropriate for the "what are you playing thread"? (edit) Also, I've heard news that they're finally, FINALLY fixing the durability bug for Dark Souls 2 on PC for the un-"remastered" version. Apparently, it wasn't a feature all this time after all, contrary to what they claimed at one point! Here's the grand total amount of money that I'm willing to spend on FromSoftware games in the future: $0 If you beat Penumbra, you're ahead of the game. Thought Black Plague was scarier than Amnesia and Outlast combined, in part because I spent much more time searching for clues because the puzzles were much harder.
  11. He does have a point. Does he really need 1500+ words to get it across? Jeez. I disagree, though. There are plenty of games that don't have violence (explicitly anyway, it may be in as an abstraction). He wants non-violent games in a genre -first and third person- that originally developed to depict and submerge the player in violence. And when he finds them, he glosses it over. It's a buyer's market and AAA titles are what buyers demand: CoD and Battlefield clones. I read that just ~15% of players finished Alien Isolation. Not enough shooting and gore, perhaps. Then again, I'm an old school FPS fan, so what do I know... I don't know if the Alien Isolation thing is because of a lack of shooting and gore. I think for a lot of non-hardcore gamers (and even some hardcore gamers), that game is really scary and that probably caused it. I think this because Frictional Games released their metric info that said only about 2% of players finished Amnesia: The Dark Descent and I believe Outlast had a similar number. Now Alien Isolation wasn't as scary as those games but it was still pretty tense and scary compared to most games that come out. Yeah, maybe. I make no assumptions. However, if it's because it's really scary, you have to ask yourself how verisimilar is the violence depicted in games. Because survivors of real world violence, not to mention near-death violent experiences are often scarred for life and commonly describe the experience as "terrifying". Messed up sleep for years after, PTSD, damaged social skills, etc are common, long-lasting sequels. Violent games are rarely scary. I mean, people play violent games to relax. Hmm. People watch horror movies and read horror books. I'm not sure if the goal is relaxation. Is the violence that characterizes games like Amnesia the same as other violent games? In both Outlast and Amnesia, you as the player cannot participate in the violence, only be victimized by it. Instead of seeking it out, the goal is to avoid violence whenever possible. It's essentially violence in a completely different light. A lot of games want the player to feel powerful, but here it's the opposite. Alien Isolation has a little less of that, considering you have a gun and some enemies you can kill, but all your weapons are essentially useless against the Alien itself so when he comes into play it essentially works the same. In fact, using your gun against other enemies is the quickest way to attract the Alien, so even against enemies you can kill, it's not the best course of action.
  12. That feeling of relief and accomplishment you get when you get through a game that is really scary.

  14. Cool, looks like I'm going to GamesCon in August.
  15. And the first "news articles" about how entitled gamers ruined something else are popping up. I wonder if games journalism will ever have news instead of clickbait-via-offending ever again.
  16. Well, 90% of the humor comes from making fun of how ridiculous said minority characters are, not to shove them down your throat as paragons of diversity. Nobody comes out of this thing with dignity. It's also that it's essential to pretty much every single character's personality, plots and arcs and the whole setup of the show (being an extreme exaggeration of the fish out of the water in the insanity of big city life trope kindof requires that Kimmy meets the most insane of the insane) - not out of tokenism, which I'd consider essential to SJW television myself. There's a difference between a show having diverse characters and a show being "SJW". There's really nothing in it to justify calling it that other than being insecure because it doesn't focus on a white dude. If it was an SJW show it'd be preachy and filled with bland tokenism pandering that could offend no one, and this show clearly does not qualify.
  17. How is Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt a SJW show? I assume he took that out of context snippet of "females are strong as hell" to heart. We all know it doesn't take more than that for some MRA to completely lock up. No use arguing.
  18. Grade 11 social studies in BC (Canada), was mostly ww1, ww2, the build up to both, and Canadian civics. Anything outside Canada was covered in History 12, which I didnt take, as in grade 12 we were allowed to pick electives for our social studies credit and I took Civilization instead, which I regret since it was a quick overview on the major ancient civs then a whole lot on different art classifications. Turned into nap class. I tend to find pre 20th century history more interesting, hence avoiding History 12. It was in my history class too. My social studies class was remarkably focused on local politics with a hilariously biased teacher consistently referring to the right as "rich bastards" and the left as "the good guys".
  19. Children of Men was a good movie. I don't know why everyone seems to have such a problem with it.
  20. That seems about right. The most beautiful looking bad movie.
  21. Don't do that. I've spent like an hour looking, and I found a roundabout connecting Martin Luther Kingweg and Mahatma Gandhiweg, but it's named Rotonde Moeder Teresa. For real? I could have sworn it was the Gloria Steinem Rotonde. Must have been a roundabout or roadway somewhere else, not connected to those. I'm going to chalk it up to brainfart. To be fair, Mother Teresa does fit in with that list much better and I always did think it was ridiculous. Still, I was so certain. But fair enough, with that and 90% of members here not knowing who she is, I concede that Steinem is apparently not as well known as I previously thought. An hour, though?
  22. To be fair, he said this was a moderate place, not that he has a moderate viewpoint. To be even fairer, as someone who has been on the receiving ends of both extremes, Nonek is hella moderate.
