  1. Sorry if its been said but it would be nice, for those who have no brain like me, if the addon selection mentioned if your tier already has that item in it. As mentioned elsewhere and at different tiers the almanac is missing from all the tiers I can see.
  2. Actually I want to see the game that Josh and the rest of Obsidian wants to make thats my primary interest in backing this game
  3. I really support the no combat xp it fits with what I like in rpgs and avoids the need for fighting. I don't really see the argument for it from a gameplay position XP is like achievements a candy for a behaviour by removing it you can still do that thing its just the game no longer rewards it.
  4. If Obsidian set up a proper store, unrelated to Kickstarter I hope they create a Obsidian art book, again unrelated to the PE collectors book. No idea what fun that might entail in legal shenanigans with regards to publishing art from their licensed titles but would love to see it. I love art books so I would love to see showcases of the artists work unrelated to games.
  5. What we've heard so far reminds me of Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny, in relation to the gods, so I'm expecting jerks for gods. History is good for ideas but so long as the setting is internally consistent they can have a society based around Rimmers parents faith as Seventh Day Advent Hoppists. So long as its interesting it doesn't matter if its a historically based or based on more recent stuff or based on random fiction.
  6. I think what really made Planescape Torment amazing for me was the world the way it affected you and the story so if they want to make something as good as that they need both. This goes for another of my favourite games The Longest Journey it was the world that made the game what it is to me beyond what a good or great plot could manage set in a less interesting space.
  7. And don't forget there is paypal to add into things which can generate a fair chunk for the pot.
  8. My personal taste is that classes should be reflected in more than mechanics, take the Harper Scout, I think it was called, in NWN2 I know from Jaheira that the Harpers are an order dedicated to balance for me to take that class without some story to justify it and for it to have nil effect in story interaction seems pointless. If classes should only be mechanical in nature then their names should be simply functional descriptions. Anyway not that I should probably be commenting on these things as I'm not a PnP gamer and combat mostly bores the snot out of me but it is my feelings on classes.
  9. Given a choice of UK and Europe I always pick Europe, in part cause I like spoiling polls (assuming they want to separate those two for a reason and not cause they are just randomly pulling region names out their head) and in part cause I get annoyed at all the Brits moaning about Europe.
  10. As to my suggestion I meant that when folk play should they encounter an error make a note of it and go edit it online so that someone else playing later than them will see the fixed version. If you were really concerned of encountering spoilers store them up and correct them only when finished. You might get folks that after a play though are happy enough to read though the whole script and fix it. A good search system would certainly be beneficial though. Obviously in the case of adding a new unsupported language would mean going though everything but such an undertaking would be an altruistic act anyway and given the authors of this game reading the stuff that you perhaps missed one way or another might be some recompense.
  11. Translation is actually one of the areas where I think the community can help the most. The script should be hosted in some form of collaborative setting and as players go though they can correct it per language it would also allow other unsupported languages to be added. There is the cost of maintaining and vetting the thing so you need trusted native speakers to give stuff the once over before it gets into a patch but I would think it an overall win. Particularly if you make using it a manual affair and just leave it to vet itself.
  12. I'm not a fan of urgency real or imagined over long stretches. Take Baldurs Gate 2 you had Imoen taken from you right after the first area I thus rushed though to get the money needed to get to her. This meant the areas that were available then got largely ignored, as I followed the storyline, till my subsequent playthroughs where I ignored any and all attempts to get me to go anywhere and I languidly strolled the area looking for stuff do leaving Imoen to get thoroughly worked over by crazy torturer guy. Outside of that there is a gaming expectation that time limits aren't real so if you "sneak" an actual consequence into the game for playing on the swings for three weeks while a town is being burnt to the ground expect some "surprise" from the gamers. Not that I'm saying not to do this but perhaps not with something on the main story line. While its good to think about these things I really would prefer that if its pertinent to the game that Obsidian creates a poll of sorts though kickstarter and pings us that way so that the discussion is set by them and grabs as many backers as possible not just those willing to lower themselves into the quagmire that are the forums. Same thing goes for all the hot knife party topics.
  13. Thanks for the drm-free copy. I have to admit what I really want as an addon is the book, preferably hard back I love artbooks game related or otherwise slightly off topic but I would love to see a "The artists of Obsidian" book covering stuff by artists past/present doesn't have to relate to any games just artworks, though I do imagine some would be upset if it didn't have some things related to what the company does. My contentious musings: While AAA games do tend to come with drm theres no actual reason for it look at Bethesda they released both Oblivion and Fallout with out anything more than a disc check and, I think that the sole reason that their more recent games have used steam is to simplify the delivery of another three letters DLC (cause while some gamers may dislike steam a great many more hate games for windows live, whatever name its given though I still curse the decision as it means I can't get Dishonoured). The real reason for the push for online mechanisms is they generate added value for the publisher/developer they increase DLC uptake, they form attachment for the stores and increase exposure to advertising as well as providing a means to evaluate the consumers and do market research. They provide a competitive forum around achievements using social mechanisms for marketing and prolonging game life and in one way or another reduce second hand sales. I would love to use the "What if" machine from Futurama and see how successful Steam would be if it didn't require an account I imagine it would be interesting even if online activation was still needed. (As a slight nitpick you can get the first Assassins Creed game on GOG though I know full well what you mean given the desire I've had to break my rules for a few games)
  14. My favourite bit of disconnect at the start of a game is when you find yourself in your family house and are asked to retrieve something from the kitchen. First thought: right which way would that be.
  15. What I want is for Obsidian and the folk making the game to do what they want. What fits their talents and what fits their characters and the story they are telling. Saying none of this and must have/must not have in this area doesn't seem fitting I want to see what Obsidian makes when they aren't given a list by a publisher of do's and don'ts
  16. Project Eternity could end up on Origin, Origin is EA's store as Steam is Valves. Wasteland 2 will be sold on Origin if I remember rightly the key thing is it will be available elsewhere DRM-free. (EA are offering a lower % for indie games or kickstarter games or something for a few months) http://wasteland.inx...php?f=23&t=2180
  17. The issue would be that going though all the submissions for it would probably cost more than using an agency and paying a real acting type person. You do get the feeling that folks don't appreciate the difficulties of voice acting.
  18. Your looking at the users a solely the consumer, Linux may be a smaller number of users but they have their own networks and thus providing a game to them increases the advertising with better reach than you'd get on the more fragmented windows gaming groups. Linux users also pay and have folks that will give generously you assume that the money they provide will not cover the cost of a native client. I have no idea if it will but likely neither does Obsidian and as its work on their engine that will do them in good stead going forward its all good. For many Linux users using windows is a last resort and they won't support a game that forces them to do that same goes for using wine or the like. Hopefully they reach the goal and that spurs another massive increase to the total mayhap I'm dreaming.
  19. I think that's what their called. When items be it an extra copy of the game or whatever is paid for by adding x amount on top of the selected tier. You can see it here http://www.kickstart...re/posts/308493 There's good and bad, as I see it, but basically folks might be willing to pay an extra $50 for one item that they want rather than an extra $100 for the thing they want and a bunch of stuff they don't want. The risk is that folks willing to pay for the next tier drop their pledge. There's also the extra hassle of sorting it all out I don't know of any finished projects that have used the idea so I don't know if it all ends in a nightmarish mess. Anyway was wondering if people think its worth it or if they know of other projects experiences doing something similar. Or put another way is this something Obsidian should look at doing or kill it with lasers?
  20. I wish someone had managed a bit more noise on the removal of the DRM as I was waiting for that info before buying.
  21. Have you tried deleting just the settings folder, I'm guessing somewhere in documents, if no luck with that you can resort to the usual voodoo rituals with lots of animal sacrifices.
  22. My personal thing is an opposition to online connections I don't trust companies to not allow feature creep amongst other negative possibilities. In the case of Alpha Protocol I'll be waiting till the removal patch is released before buying the game. Hopefully they'll do the same as Deep Silver/Egosoft did with X3 and do a reissue of the DRM free game. (A bonus of getting a game after its been out for a year is all the fixes that happen in that time period and in the case of the X games thats a lot of bugs)
  23. Ah but you rather miss the point, will it be better for me not for you. I enjoyed KOTOR sort of, I enjoyed BG2 and addons, I did not enjoy NWN (that is the OC) or SOU I did like HOTU but none compare to the enjoyment I had\have of playing Planescape Torment. I guess I'm probably belabouring the point to say the least to each their own.
  24. Bioshock Spore Dragon Age Nothing really grabs me Bioshock will lack player ability to impact the storyline. Spore, well I've never been a big fan of any Civ, Sim or whatever games, I get bored of them quick mostly after finding its 2am and I ask myself have I been enjoying myself and reply no (its like some evil drug). Dragon Age, will it be as good as Planscape Torment, probably not, still its probably the one I have the most positive feelings for. I also want a Wii for Zelda and Trauma Center, and the Zelda for the DS, probably any Phoenix Wright games as well.
  25. Its rather the point though that if the games industry is as important an medium as the commentators like to make out it should have something for everyone. Not everyone likes challenging films most people don't read challenging books but that doesn't mean they don't advance the entire field or that they aren't worth the time, effort and money that went into them. If the games industry is ever to claim to be the equal of the movie industry it has to show a greater breadth, depth and maturity of content than it currently has. As another example of more serious issues Narcissu is a Japanese graphic novel about terminal illness. I wouldn't call this a game, a graphic novel done on a computer, but I think as a computer program it still exists in a nearby space to that which games inhabit in terms of the user perception (though in being unfamiliar with the context of use in Japan I could be wrong). After all gaming for me is about filling the space left by game books like Fabled lands and Lone wolf though of course I demand much more from a computer game.
