I have to say I was vastly underwhelmed. It had no particularly British flavour to it. Nor anything else to mark it out from a slew of 'secret organisations operating behind the scenes and solving crimes more suited to the local social services than a multi-million pound agency' shows. The whole defence of Earth rests on these cretins? We're really are screwed. And the hopeless platitudes! If this show turns out to be a low-budget stargate then I'm not going to bother...

Great Book. Hard to hide there, as well, since you'd stick out a mile. And get eaten. But at least you'd give the hero some company.

I agree with Tingeling. Crafting your own character is fun at first. BUt after a while I like the notion of having certain things forced on you. Even teh entire character. In the When Gravity Fails sourcebook for Cyberpunk you got quite odd flaws (major and minor) that while handicaps made for a far richer roleplaying experience. But then I enjoy acting in general.

Hmmm. Definitely sounds good. Hopefully I can catch a rerun on BBC 3.

Just to clarify a couple of points raised. 1) You are in the book as yourself, moving around the scenes set in teh text at first and later learning to refocuss your perception and enter implied areas and backstory. 2) You can die in a book, although neither alive nor dead. For an outsider this is referred to as becoming 'boojummed'. I don't think constant fighting woud be fun. But if I were going to I'd have to choose Gaunt's Ghosts. Because at least you'd be fighting for a good reason. Ian Fleming's books would certainly be very English and thus almost like being at home, but you could move around most of the globe in style.

What I want to know is, what are the comparative befits of eating veg regularly compared with the benefits of putting on a fancy outfit and fighting crime regularly? I can't be expected to do both.

Sand, ease up on the religious discussion. This is not a religious discussion. No-one is leaving. I haff locked zee doors. I definitely don't buy hanging around gay people will make ou gay. If you are naturally gay but suppressing it, hanging around gay people may make you realise you don't need to suppress it. Good for you. Having a gay scoutmaster could be exactly what some of the boyscouts need! It might also get across to some hetero lunkheads that gay men don't spend their entire time simply gaying themselves up and waiting to turn someone gay. They have jobs, and just like the rest of us can be committed hard working individuals. Or am I missing something?

I considered the Culture novels, but I'm afraid all the smug self-satisfaction would get on my nerves. I can't imagine much worse than hiding in an Irving Welsh book! What are you, nuts? Most books would be interesting if nothing else. Being trapped in a magazine would be a bit - I don't know - constrained, surely? Particularly a porno magazine. You'd be constantly covered in goo, and no-one interesting would talk to you. Maybe Playboy but even then I imagine it would be tedious for more than a week. Ditto for any other magazine, except possibly New Scientist.
