  1. The OP is hyperbolic, but I do think Ashley Johnson's talents could have been better used elsewhere. Her narration sounds forced, overly dramatic and it gets in the way of the scene.
  2. It's not just the per-rest vs. per-encounter that bothers me, but the restrictions on leveling up. I liked having a large toolkit open up every couple levels. It gave me a variety of spells from which to choose for various situations. Now I'm restricted to a few, and since the druid class is weakened as a whole, I'm almost obligated to pick just a couple all-around useful ones. It feels a lot more restrictive. But does it make sense to gain those abilities and not be able to use them during a fight because you ran out of casts?
  3. I prefer the PoE1 system. Yes, I had to rest a lot to re-up abilities, but now I stand around during a battle with no spells left to cast. Spells are more limited (playing a druid) and much, much weaker. Priests have been weakened too, so without a chanter I end up forced to play support mage all the time. I don't understand the criticism that buying camping supplies was annoying. Now you have to scrounge for very expensive food ingredients to get a good bonus on resting.
  4. Really? Because every time I turned around it seemed like someone else was wanting to hump my leg, though apart from Aloth none of them can really be called a relationship. Good if you're into flings, I guess.
  5. Why should she be in an order devoted to service of the ducs bels? Because she's devoted to the service of the ducs bels?? She can play a devoted fighter then for all I care. She's not a paladin. That's what her order IS.
  6. Indeed, you can't make a beeline to the palace, which supposedly is the "right" place to go in Neketaka before all others according to some here. Though I accept that there can be ways of recruiting Tekehu that seem more integral to the story than mine did. I still don't see his character as suited to your task. BTW I checked, the north exit opens only Periki's Overlook. The east exit opens only the Gullet and Periki's Overlook.
  7. Why should she be in an order devoted to service of the ducs bels? Because she's devoted to the service of the ducs bels??
  8. Why make us go through there at all if you're supposed to beeline to the palace? Other areas are gated off. I feel this is really straining at an explanation for why Tekehu's recruitment should make sense. Why not just say you like him and be done with it.
  9. Again, you're forced to go through Periki's Overlook. Forced. So no, your assertion that people ignore the game to go do their own thing and somehow this is "wrong" is just silly. All this besides the fact that Clario simply tells you that if you want to do business in the Deadfire, you'll need to see Onekaza. There's no particular urgency in that.
  10. So you depend on reviewers to tell you how to play a game instead of just... you know... playing the game? Besides, I consider the game forcing me to go to Periki's Overlook and not gating off the guild hall as telling me it's fine to go there. So maybe stop apologizing for the game having poor quest design, since you seem to agree it has?
  11. Druid is significantly weaker in PoE2. Maybe that was intended, but it still sucks.
  12. I let both dragons go and never saw them again. Had to listen to Onekaza berate me about the water dragon, that was it.
  13. Re "self hating"- Pallegina turns out to be quite right and justified in wanting to remove the binds put on her by a god, since we find out in this game what those are intended for. I was happy to see her again in this game, but like all the companions I think she suffered from being pigeonholed for the sake of the disposition system, and in her case the faction conflict.
  14. A random pirate is more suited to hunt a god than a godlike who is worshipped by the entire Huana society (regardless of what he thinks of it)? I like Serafen too, but come on. Nevermind that them being or not being suited for your mission has nothing to do with their motivation to join you, which is what your initial complaint was about. I guess his desire to settle things with Eothas gave him the power to teleport across the sea from Aedyr to Caed Nua then. Why didn't he teleport directly to the Deadfire though, if it was Eothas he was after and not you? What does Tekehu being an Ondra godlike have to do with chasing Eothas, something he expresses absolutely no interest in? Someone who actually knows ships is pretty important for a ship's crew. I was complaining that there was no good reason to recruit him. His motivation is part of that, his suitability is another. As far as timeline for Eder, I can't comment since in my game he was in Dyrford.
  15. They're in a tropical paradise. There's no reason other than mismanagement that people should be starving. There's no reason for the Roparu to not go out into the wide world and hunt and grow their own food, except an archaic caste system convinces them that their suffering is ordained on religious grounds and if they try to alleviate it, they wouldn't benefit from their efforts anyway. So essentially what you're saying is that no choice makes any real difference in the end, it's all flavor. That being the case, I pick the flavor that at least gives lip service to people being able to change their circumstances. Though in the case of the game, there isn't much hope that the Huana are going to get there anytime soon.
  16. You can head to Deadlight right after Port-Maje, and he will still tell you about Remaro even though he barely knows you. The only difference between the quality of his motivation and Tekehu's is that you are okay with one character but dislike another. If you want to talk about companions who don't have proper motivations to join you, look at Eder who goes back to Adyr to reunite with his parents if you don't finish his quest in the first game. Yet in Deadfire he is suddenly by your side because reasons, even though he doesn't really owe you anything. He can decide that you get things done based on your initial encounter with Benweth and his head scan. And he's still 100% more suited to your real mission than Tekehu is. As for Eder, regardless of where he was at the end of PoE1, he's not there for you- he's there for Eothas who's up and walking around.
  17. Poverty with an opportunity to rise is not nearly the same thing, and not all societies actively embrace classist thinking let alone put religious significance to their classes. Well, to paraphrase the Durance, "the last thing the Deadfire needs is another foreign incursion." If you can convince yourself that you're doing good and that it's your place to decide, I guess there's no stopping you. I'm pretty comfortable with a free-for-all ending, myself. If the Huana want freedom, they're going to have to figure it out for themselves.
  18. Where I live people in cities are encouraged to participate in the economy to the extent their talent and hard work allows them. The main reason I prefer not to choose between outsiders is that the Huana themselves should make this choice. Who am I to make it for them?
  19. I would have no problem with having an option to kick Maia out. I think that should be available for every companion tbh. Again, with Serafen, I only went to Fort Deadlight in mid to late game. I got the impression that he only decided to tell you about Remaro after seeing that you can get things done. And if I have to twist this much to make Tekehu's story seem plausible, that is bad writing- or bad quest design. If, as people keep saying, you're supposed to go to the palace on a beeline, then the rest of the city should have been gated off until you did.
  20. The Kahanga are the only tribe that has made any progress at uniting the others. If there was a different Huana faction that had a leg up, then it might be a different story. And the other islands are more their home than they are home to the VTC or RDC. Those factions aren't even bothering to settle, much- they're just robbing the islands.
  21. It's only one of numerous things that are irritating about his character. But taken together with knowing how his story turns out, it makes me question why I should recruit him at all. Because this is why you are on the island to begin with - to see the Queen. Not to solve local problems, not to sightseeing or visiting random temples - you swam across the sea to visit the Palace. You also were told it's very difficult to get the audience. And just the moment ago you impressed the crowd with the ghost show, so, while impression is fresh, it makes perfect sense to proceed to the Palace immediately in hope it will let you see the royal family. Actually, when you are done with the Gullet, Prince gives you next task and sends Tekehu with you - again. If it's OK to take Tekehu with you to the Gullet on the Prince's request, it should not be less OK to do it again. And it does not make any sense because...? No, seriously - why? Tekehu has a personal problem - conflict of artistic nature and demanding political figure role. Why exactly he has to pay attention to some rumors about some giant statues? Not "a stranger" - a Watcher. And how is this particular complain related to believability of Tekehu? Address your complains to the genre then. 99.9% quests in every RPG there is has the same problem - main character being a total stranger is supposed to solve everyone's problems from kittens on the trees to world saving. But we are talking about Tekehu. And I can only repeat - it's totally understandable not to like his personality. But telling he is "badly written" or "makes less sense than any other companion" - is ridiculous. I didn't turn in the Prince's quest until the end of the game. First, I didn't like being his lackey. Second, seeing what a mess his city is underscored why I shouldn't bother to run his city for him. So I don't care much about his suggestion to take Tekehu with me, either, especially since he doesn't explain it. Why should I ditch one of my crew so one of the locals can go sightseeing in his own city? You're arguing that I should make a beeline to the palace and stop nowhere along the way, then arguing I should just take Tekehu along for no purpose whatsoever. I get that if you like him, you're interested in his artistic dilemma. I'm not, and it breaks logic that I should recruit someone who is clearly unsuited and not especially willing. If you tell Tekehu (as I did) that you want him along so that he can use his powers to kill your enemies, he ought to refuse to join your crew. After all, he'd just be trading one unpalatable duty for another. His sole rationale (other than adventure and getting away from his guild) being a single quest in the Gullet makes no sense whatsoever for a permanent companion. Particularly since there's no good reason to take him there. Contrast Serafen- after the Principi attacks your ship, his rationale for joining you to hunt down the ones who attacked you makes sense, and his personality is suited to your mission. Or Maia- I wasn't thrilled with where her quest was going, either, but she had a legitimate reason to want to serve on your crew, and her story ended up resolving itself surprisingly well. Tekehu's is just disappointing all throughout.
  22. Better than Vailians or Rauataians? Easy. They're indigenous, and this is their home. Whatever other issues they have, they can change.
  23. That's not a reason for joining your crew. If he just needed babysitting to go to a section of his own city, he could have taken an apprentice or two. It's a pretty lame rationale. Because... you have to go through Periki's Overlook and that big building is right on the way? And because why not?
  24. I was going to go with the VTC until they told me to blow up their rivals' base. So I went with the "screw all y'all" option. All the companions got a decent enough ending.
  25. Ukaizo was definitely anti-climactic. I think the Eothas thing was a sign not of amateur writing but of it being a middle game. They had to have this thing happen for the larger meta-plot, so there couldn't be branching outcomes to your Eothas chase.
