Started reading The Philosophy of Existentialism by Marcel Gabriel. I like existentialism but I do not like this guys writing style or reasons. I dumped it after skimming through the begging of the chapters and the end of the chapters to get the jist.

Evolution, creation or something else?
I believe the major difference between religion and belief, is that religion has an absolute doctrine that is unchanging and cannot be proved upon... unlike science where its beliefs are self correcting, peer reviewed etc... Where as the bible cannot be, but i think the bible could be personally improved by sayings from basic philosophy, even saying something like though should not harm your children.

Evolution, creation or something else?
I like Daniel Dennets explaination, that ideas fight eachother for control of the mind, not parasites like in other animals like mice, fish, grasshoppers etc... These ideas then reproduce from host to host by churches and children etc... Its very resilient, and many of these ideas are not even self interested, these ideas are the ones we have to watch out for. Religion can be a meaning for the masses who cannot, or don't want another meaning to live also. It will help them survive. I believe religion is one way of helping easing of pain and suffering of a loved one. How a child can be relieved by a mentor by saying that her father is alive in the sky still watching over her, and still loves her. But theres a point to which artificial reasoning can be detrimental to society when it comes to stem cell research, abortion and contraceptive issues, global warming, gay rights, and even sometimes the disrespect of science.

Evolution, creation or something else?
what i am trying to say is that if you have faith in God its obviously proof enough for you. im talking more about beliefs which we dont need to go into Faith is not proof. wow i've said like 40 times that this is basically a proofless subject. no ones gonna find proof that will prove anything to the other person. i said that for me, personally, faith is proof I have faith theres a diamond in my back yard... I sure hope my faith is correct too!

Windows Vista for Gamers
I agree. I am becoming increasaingly irate with the boot time of my laptop with XP. have you looked at the MSCONFIG.EXE startup subcategory to see what programs run on startup? Note: For those interested you can check MSCONFIG.EXE by clicking START >RUN > type MSCONFIG.EXE and click OK.

Impeach Bush?
OK back to impeachment. Hypothetically: Whether we can or not. If there is or was good conclusive evidence that gives us reason to impeach, should we? Would impeaching GWB make things worse in the long run? I've heard many people say it is a bad idea, we should not because the democrats love GWB due to his negative image it brings to the Republican party, thus giving the democrats a leg up. I can see this being a moral dilemma. Setting justice aside for one person for anothers' political advantage. I am iffy about this, it sends an image that the higher you on the ladder the more you can get away with crime. Which is a sad reality. If Bush or any president does something completely illegal, and causes pain and suffering they should be brought to justice and made an example. I know Bush hasn't been caught, I'm just stating this in general. Not prosecuting somebody who broke the law for your own benefit is wrong i believe. What do you guys think?

What are you playing now?
I haven't gotten through SS2 yet, i should pick this up again. I have the game. I really need to beat all the games i own! I have Civ4 collecting dust, NWN2, SS2. I will end up beating them though! I'm very persistent! Ask my boss, i take Wednesday off making my work week only 4 days long hahahaha. Everyone is so envious because they don't have the balls to do the same.

What are you playing now?
KoTOR1! I play this game every 2 years about. This is my 3es time through it. Fun fun, i like to see how much differently it runs on my new system too. Not a stutter at high res. Playing a male scout, just landed on Dantooine. Bastila Can't get enough, shes all over me. I'm playing with the Revan Mask+ 2.0 mod that adds a few extras here and there. Solid game, I love how the dialog is so important, and the choices make a difference. Zaalbar seems practically useless, do you people give that brute a gun or sword? He deserves a a giant sledge hammer really. I want to see skin particles fly when he hits those foos!

Evolution, creation or something else?
Natural selection means that things evolve through traits that helped survival and reproduction, this gets done by gene sifting. Through this process micro and macro evolution occurs through time driven by the species, not some type of God. This means no Intelligent designer is needed to create a nylon bug, or liger. Is it saying there is no god? No thats impossible to say, thats like saying there are no Pink unicorns, Its impossible to disprove a negative. Science can only show reality, not another realm like The Forms. edit: A God might possibly exist, there just has to be some kind of positive empirical evidence for a skeptic to see it. Its an extraordinary claim to say there is a god. All I ask for is to see some evidence. Meta made me think when he mentioned emotions. This idea of God/Jesus and the right way to be one is to be saved. To have a personal relationship to God/Jesus means you are emotionally attached. Losing a friend hurts, even if its not based in reality, i can understand. Daniel Dennet Just wrote a book named Religion: As a natural Phenomenon. It dives into memes and gives another look at them. He puts forth that its not reproduction that humans do like any other animal. And its not parasites that inter our brains and control us. Its Ideas. Ideas like religion, freedom, Democracy, communism. These ideas attach itself to parts of our brain and competes with other ideas. But are some of these ideas that people die for beneficial? Would we really let an idea dictate our brain? Islam does mean- To Submit. I think we should teach Critical Thinking at a younger age. I wish i had it, instead I had bible classes twice a week, they indoctrinated me as a child. I was told I was a Christian, i was baptized before i ever had a chance to excersice freewill. They implanted an idea deep inside my head that painstakingly didn't want be over ruled.

Truth and beauty can be very different. Which is more important, who knows!

Evolution, creation or something else?
Or we could just as easily say the the invisibly pink unicorn created the universe prior to its existence.

Evolution, creation or something else?
yeah, perhaps. that'll change again i'm sure. taks Perhaps, and in ten more years they'll find even smaller particles, and smaller. Its fascinating what they find when they look at the particles up close.... space.

Evolution, creation or something else?
This is more psychology and psychology is tough for me to get into. There is a new form of psychology called evolutionary psychology though that has been around for a very short time. It doesn't say we are absolutely selfish or altruistic but somewhere in between. I would call these virtues a few are very stoic. How to explain them would be how they each separately effect the individual. Individuals complexities differ from person to person, each complexity still vastly different from the next. But take love for instance... Why does it exist? Chemically its generally just a chemical rushing to your brain called serotonin, and that chemical will give you a certain feeling. Why have this chemical rush to the brain? Could it help the human survive? Does it help the whole tribe as a community survive and co exist? I think it is beneficial to the survival, which leads to natural selection. Thats could be one answer out of many answers for love.

Play Half-life 2 WITH YOUR BRAIN!
Have you read Ismael by Danielle Quinn? It goes into how we ruined the earths equilibrium (if there is such a thing) by starting the agriculture revolution and it ties the whole adam and eve story to it making the first sin agriculture. How we can't go back, so we have to make room, we have to limit our population, and let biodiversity grow... all of this from a talking gorilla. hmmm come to think of it pretty weird, but the adam and eve twist was entertaining to me as I was first diving into philosophy.

Evolution, creation or something else?
Actually I disagree on there is no evidence of intelligent design. Think on this. We have a moon that had propelled us to seek a way to reach it, to motivate us to see what is there. On that moon there just happens to be ice, water that we can use for it is necessary for our survival. Next we have Mars, which just happens to be terraformable and also has a source of water. By the time we get to Mars we will need large amount of metals and ore to continue and Earth is a long ways away. We now have the asteroid belt to get raw materials from. Now by this time we need a more fuel and even more water to do deep space missions. Where do we go? Jupiter and its moons, which one of them has tons of water just happen to be available and the gas giant itself is a good source of fuel if we can collect it. Now is this all coincidence that this happened? Maybe, but I don't believe in coincidence. A Vacuous truth i believe. That is a logical fallacy. Right?

Evolution, creation or something else?
uh, technically evolution is a theory. as i said, many (if not most) aspects of evolution are indeed fact, or at least testable (observable as well). though as a whole, it is a theory. i also noted that there are few scientific theories that ever make it into the realm of law or "fact." that's just the nature of science i guess. taks A Scientific Theory and a generic English definition of a theory are different. Evolution is a fact. Its not absolute, there are none in the scientific realm of reality, at least that we can ever prove beyond a doubt. Evolution is a fact of statistics, in every theory or even law there are straggling new discoveries being found being added and examined, gravity, plate tectonics, and evolution included. Their facts, until proven otherwise. Science is self correcting, gotta love it.

Evolution, creation or something else?
Whats harder to believe. That the universe was created by a complex intelligent designer(scientology beings or Abrahamic god) Where did those being come from then? Or that The universe always existed, partivles always collided and crashed discovering random compatibility with eachother by trial and error? We have a mechanism called evolution that works. To say ______ (<---put a gods name in the space) created the universe, makes us erase an entire mechanism (evolution) that works. There is no evidence for intelligent design, there is no theory of how it works except that its "complex" Its taking a step in the axial model, why not go back to Plato's Forms instead of the second rate philosophy of today.

Evolution, creation or something else?
ok gods great, god persues everyone.... lots of great stuff thrown around, but WHERES THE PROOF! Gimme the evidence, lets critically think. If you have no empirical evidence gimme your logical and ill counter it.

Evolution, creation or something else?
uh, given your previous statement did you intend to say "... do teach as fact"? if so, then perhaps the lines are blurred from your high school perspective on what constitutes the differences between fact and theory? not meant to be a criticism, but i'm just saying that maybe hindsight, after you're well out of school, will allow you to see your teachings in a different light. it is, after all, referred to as "the theory of evolution" by most mainstream scientists. many (if not most) aspects of evolution are indeed fact, as they have been observed, though some of the mechanisms are in question or at least debatable. no, btw, i'm not in high school, though i am in school yet again. fortunately, i'm done with my classwork focusing on research at this point. taks Tak are you saying its incorrect to call evolution a fact? I think you might be playing semantics if you are implying so.

Evolution, creation or something else?
Noahs Ark found? Critically think this through and you will find that a negative period. You can think what you want though. I wont attack you, but your ideas have not been critically examined by yourself. To look at a piece of desert that has a ridge and claim that as Noah's ark just because of its shape sounds rather hilarious. Can you give some real evidence so we can continue this debate? Please you can go into irreducible complexity, 2nd law of thermodynamics, entropy, the idea that DNA mutation doesn't add new information rather it just adds more of the same. how about fossil records and the DIFFERENT kinds of fossil dating methods their are and how accurate they are. How about statistics. Its takes extraordinary evidence to prove extraordinary claims. Lets have it. EDIT: I only see one post by this guy is he coming back?
