I'm suddenly picturing a breaking news story re: store employees chasing after some crazed man rampaging through a grocery store with an armful of stolen potatoes. ...I've definitely had moments in games like that. So frustrating.

Is anyone else having "loading lag" response times a lot, recently? Clicking threads, logging in/out, hit post button, hit edit button, etc. As usual, could just be me or some browser setting I use or whatever, so just asking - although I'm not having similar issues re: other websites/forums. Hence, checking-in.

What are you Playing Now? - Back to the Grind
LadyCrimson replied to majestic's topic in Computer and Console
Still occasionally glance around Steam for other sandboxy games. Apparently, just like with most other genres, in my old-fartness I'm too picky and thus I can't find anything I think I'd like. Thus Still occasionally No Man's Sky. I created a save/chr. whose express purpose was supposed to be actually rushing the main quest line to *finish* that, and teleporting to the supposed slightly higher odds of "lush" planets galaxy. Thus, one main chr. in starting Euclid, and one chr. hopping around in a 2nd galaxy. But 50ish hours later, that chr. is sitting at the final main quest (that aspect wasn't even close to 50 hrs, just to say) and every time I load in I do anything *but* finish that last quest/step. I have no idea why I'm so reluctant to do it. I just get to that point, have a junker ship/weapon ready to use (there's a reason for that) etc. But then ... "nah." -
^ Note to self: if I ever get this game, create/get mod for "all vendors have 10+ potatoes". Re: traversal - I remember something about open world/exploration design, some "rule" of having some POI (building, town, extraordinary view, animal crossing, field of pickables, bandits, whatever) every 5 minutes (or 10, or 15, or whatever it was) in any direction from another POI. And part of why some games feel more engaging/fun to romp around in is they are mostly following that "rule". Because, at least for me, after a point, it doesn't matter how much fun the travel method is, if there's nothing interesting to see/do/look at. Even if they're following that "rule", the problem with foot travel .... they're probably basing that time on horse/car travel, not foot. I like staying on foot because I don't like having to get in/out, on/off of some mount/car every 3 minutes to pick a flower or mine a rock. EDIT: I don't expect foot travel to be as fast as a vehicle, but jeez, it's a game, can't we at least speed-walk.

Headlines were telling me that there's a gajillion more plastic micro-mirco particles in even 1 liter of bottled water than previously thought. Which of course is probably not a great thing for anyone's long term health. Is this supposed to be a scary revelation? *unwraps a plastic wrapped piece of sugarless candy to eat* *drinks a drink from glass/metal that probably still has oodles of micro-plastic in it because of the water filtering they do in factory* *drinks home-carbon filtered water that still likely has plastic because of filter structure in the metal unit, but hey at least it tastes better* *wearing a robe largely made of "plastic"* *walks on carpet largely made of "plastic"* *sits in a room with a bunch of heated plastic all day* I'm still waiting for the 3rd arm mutation. Which would actually be handy. Two arms is so limiting. Humans should've evolved with more redundancy, darnit.

Cinema and Movie Thread: coming at you at 24fps

While it was ok for what it was/trying to be/the times etc, the only reason to watch Cat From Outer Space was the cute kitty, during a time before YouTube. That Society of the Snow film was pretty good. Took a few liberties at the end re: the real event, but minor. It's a lot less over-dramatic than most, although there are bits. Occasionally the scene switch edits felt a bit abrupt. One of the more interesting things the film did was tell most of it more from the perspective (he does all the VO narrating as well) from one of the young men who did not actually survive, vs. the two who hiked out/brought rescue. I'd give it something like 6.5-7/10 perhaps, if you like based on real disaster movies. -

Since it was on netflix now, I watched Equalizer 3. I liked the non-US setting/filmwork, and it started off ok, but by the end I realized this character has become more of a shadowy boogeyman, even if on the side of "good", vs. simply a man with extra special skills. Maybe this is in part to hide old-actor can't really do moves but there could be better ways to handle that. Denzel is still Denzel but the movie was meh. Right now I'm in the middle of watching Society of Snow (also Netflix), which I think is a Spanish film re: that '72 Andes plane crash. It's already far better than the US film Alive (I did like that movie all right for the time, but). -
Music: Sharing and Listening - Where words fail, music speaks

Maybe I should learn to play one of these as a new hobby. Not that I actually will. But I should. The sound is lovely. -
When are (large expansive area) games going to give us bionic leg attachments as the excuse, so we can simply "run" faster. I don't care about flying per se - not that it's not cool and all - I just want ground running to feel faster than a crippled snail. The run pace is the first thing I mod if it's at all possible. Sci-fi games especially -bionic leg attachments you can craft - Is that so much to ask for?

Mid winter blahs and we're both pretty much I am tempted to turn the living room - that we hardly use - into nothing but a giant mattress with a 75" TV on the ceiling. Hubby could watch movies while lying flat that way, too. Giant circular heart bed? It's a thought. Edit: actually what we need is a tv thingie that acts like an auto-garage door, sliding it up to ceiling angle but then you could put it back down to wall angle. And then super powered electric adjustable bed/s. Yup, I'll get right on that.

Mostly did smaller supporting roles, some TV series that didn't last long, guest episodes etc. I think he went more towards the producer/director side the past 20 years, Madam Secretary being a notable one. I only know of that one because hubby was watching it for a while and I looked it up. I still remember him most from Rob Roy for some reason. Probably because of the OST that went with it. -
Maybe they'll pull a No Man's Sky and in three-five years it'll be (sort of, mostly) the game they promised. Re: the jetpack - is there any "trick" where you can use another chr. command to force horizontal movement? NMS has this thing where if you press melee attack with jetpack hotkey it does a long burst of fast forward momentum while punching the air. Nowhere in the game is this mentioned anywhere that I know of, and it took me forever to discover it by accident. Without it jetpack in NMS re: forward - you go forward but it's similar where it's very slow/feels kind of pointless. Good for getting up steep cliffs/out of holes, mostly. Edit: it's possible they don't generally want fast forward jet pack/exploration simply because the graphics wouldn't keep up with speed - ie, a lot of draw pop-in when you land/stop. You get that in NMS, even for shortish distances, a lot.

postscript: If it wasn't for hubby's back (or if I was single) I'd probably eventually just find one of my old "Junker" cars used somewhere. Like the '74 Toyota Corolla 2-dr coupe. Or this orange '77 corolla hatchback. No fancy AI/computer chips/cameras/screens etc. I weirdly miss them. Although I don't miss their ability (or lack thereof) to pick up speed going up hills. Simpler times.

Ah. So metals. I remember a decade or two ago when it was copper, people stealing pipes/wires, fixtures/towel bars and whatever else, from anywhere/neighborhood. Seems like it would've been easier to go under hubby's van for a "quickie" hack theft of that sort but what do I know. Not that one (known) attempt in 40+ years is something to get fussed over but if hubby's back=no need re: workspace/that old van anymore maybe we can turn into 1 car family and put in the garage. I've been considering us going to 1 car anyway if we can find something we can be both easily drive. It's extremely rare we need two cars anymore.

Neighbor told us they saw some kid/teen crawling under my car in the wee hours. They shouted at them, scared him off, but he was doing it again not long after. Reported to cops, sirens finally scared him off etc. Cops didn't knock on our door - or if they did, we didn't wake up Guess past few days there's been some other weirdness like that reported. Troublesome teens. The way my brain works I wasn't thinking about safety concerns but rather why in the world someone would want to crawl (repeatedly) under a very low to the ground, very old small passenger wagon car. Any metal worth stealing under there? Lost a cat? Our driveway/garage front is pretty lit up, btw. Not a dark hole. Not a very good hiding spot. Edit: oh and yes, Happy 2024, everyone, hope it's a good one.

Oops. I'm in the dancing rooms of YT again. Irish dance routines to modern music, loved it. Also, double-checked - they're actual older/younger brother, not greenscreened. -

Finally, my perfect nature documentarian/narrator. "True facts is not appropriate for children, nor for adults who don't act like children." -
Hubby's rental car this week was a Toyota Highland Hybrid. He said it was a little more comfy than our own cars but not extremely so. I was curious and checked the height of the rear cargo door for my ability to close it by hand. Nope, can't reach, just like that Subaru I almost bought a while back. I know I know, keyfobs and electric switches, but hey, what if the car battery is dead? lol. ...if I ever need a new car, maybe I'll just get a scooter with a couple giant side baskets.

Looks ok for what it is - I lol'd at Bob the Beaver. That was cute.

Well, the several frames of this: ...looks fine in my eyes, although perhaps it's because it reminds me a tiny bit of the dungeon keeper 1 intro knight (haha). The rest - well let's just say it's not for me. I'd rather watch that old pixelated DK1 intro repeatedly instead. But ... well, I guess they tried?
