  2. I don't want to attack the translators or something. But that whole workflow is just plain bull**** and it's obvious that the translation company as a whole didn't really care. I think the problem lies at Obsidian, be it because of budget problems or whatever. The translation company is crap, the whole workflow is crap. Mods can't replace a well made translation. You can just fix the worst things, that is not the same as a thought out, lovingly crafted translation. Besides, lots of people will never even download it. I want, and maybe I'm just very naive and idealistic here, that the kids these days get a game that is at least as much a good read as the games in our days, maybe even better. In the best case it would be just like reading a book. Deadfire came very close to a good book. Not Dostojewski, but better than Ayn Rand (Maybe I just don't like Ayn Rand, but you get the point. It's definitely better than Rowling.). In German it's just gibberish. And with the mod it's corrected gibberish. You can read it, it makes sense, some phrases sound more natural but it still does not feel like something.
  3. I agree that the cooldown mechanic can be overused easely. But it is a nice mechanic that can feel good and make sense. What I would do is using cooldowns for things like sword moves and kicks but never for magic or special abilites and the cooldowns would not be per ability, but per action. So the fighter would have a lot of cooldowns, other classes not so much.
  4. I like that. Now let the length of the cooldown be determined by the characters athletics and I'm in.
  5. By the way: I'd prefer it too, that fighters stick to sword moves and stuff. Maybe on a very high level they could gain some super martial arts abilites. But I think PoE handled that very well so far. I think there's no reason to complain. Why? How often in a row do you think you could swing your big twohander in an arc iwthout a pause before your arms start getting weak?
  6. That makes no difference. You play it although it is boring, because you like what it stands for. That doesn't change the fact that it comes with very limited options and repetitive gameplay. Also, you are sooo alpha. May I touch your muscles? Just once?
  7. Yes, charge is not a no brainer anymore, so it finally makes sense to use other fighter abilites.
  8. I heard in France you try to avoid the english language as much as possible. I wonder how you did it in the Pirates of the Carribean movies. In Germany most of the terms (Like "Black Pearl" for example) were kept in english language, with a few exceptions. How's it in France?
  9. I can answer that. It started in some company, where a person who was told that he is "in charge" felt the need to justify his pitiful existence. So he decided to make things more efficient. He managed to make the product cheaper by hiring unemployed coal miners from the street instead of qualified workers and totally ****ed it up in the process. But no one told him (so they wouldn't get replaced by an unemployed coal miner from the street, too) and besides he wouldn't have cared anyway. Problem was that now this company could offer their services cheaper than every other company in the field. At first that was not a big problem, but some of their customers didn't care much about quality so they had their little niche on the market. Which constantly grew. Why? Because out there's always someone "in charge" who feels the need to justify his pitiful existence. And before you can say "The free market regulates itself" hiring unemployed coal miners had become industry standard, the prices dropped and the end customers got so much used to buying games with 200 hours of gameplay for 5.99$ (Delivered next thuesday, without delay and in perfect condition) that they took higher prices for an insult and started attacking you with pitchforks if you dared offering them additional DLC content or (god forbid) a full expansion.
  10. At least for Poe1 it was. My wife switched to Russian, because it was easier to understand even considering the fact that her russian is far worse than her perfect german. I convinced her that for Deadfire english is the only real option
  11. I gave up with the german version during the tutorial. It reads like the translator didn't even know what the current quest was about. As if it was translated line by line in a random order. And not even that was done well. So definitely no benefit from my side. We had the same discussion about PoE1 and at some point I did shut my mouth. But I have enough. This is unbearable and even if it doesn't really affect me, I think it's stupid and wrong. Not even that this attitude leads to people becoming estranged from their languages, it affects how this specific game is viewed. In my opinion this is a quality of storytelling that you hardly see in fantasy games these days, but for a french, german, italian or spanish player it has become impossible to see in what regard this game is better than any of that cheap fantasy crap out there. This should be important to Obisidan. Stichwort Dieselskandal. I thought that too, when I read how translations are done these days: Am I really that old?
  12. Is that really how it works, or do you exaggerate it a bit? Do I understand you correctly that the localization testers get chunks of ****ty text, have to correct them somehow and that's what they call a translation?
  13. I think it's true. But he said it was an external team (I think he means external in the sense of they hired a company) and as far as I understood, they haven't had the means to check if they've done a good job. So there was feedback but it was handled poorly/not at all. But I'm not shure if I got that right. Waitwaitwait. The italian, spanish and german translation were done in Poland? Is that a fact or just a claim? Come on. A game like Deadfire can only be translated well by natives. There are dialects and stuff in there. No foreign speaker has the sensibility to get that right. Not that they even tried. Even for a native it would be very hard and should be done by real professionals. I heard that more than once from different people. Edit: I just listened through the companion voices in polish. Man, they are really great, some of them fit perfectly. Maybe I'm not right in the head, but I'm actually a bit moved. I assume it's the same company as the same stupid error (Item names) occured again. Edit: They actually didn't. I think, it's really important. Back in the BG days people complained about the translation being poorly done, just because the company took a few liberties. But everything was understandable and well written (Of course the language in that games was a bit simpler overall). The VO (Yes that game had german VO) was excellent. Montaron for example had Willem Dafoe's german voice. These days the translations are mostly unbearable and people don't even notice. This is true for films, too. What we see here is a degeneration of peoples ability to distinguish good from bad language. You tell someone that this or that sentence sounds odd and get the response: "Why? I can understand what's going on." That can't be the way. You can't outsource that kind of stuff to the players. Sooner or later the game companies would assume that as normal. Do you want to wait for every new games fan translation, if it ever gets finished. Once the professional made translations were better than the fan stuff. Somehow the standards for this have to raise again. I don't expect everything to sound like ****ing Goethe, but every film, game or whatever should be translated in a manner that fits the level of the original text. And the crap we got for PoE1+2 is just highly unworthy of the original.
  15. Why has this game restrictions at all? Every character should have the ability to do everything I want. That always bugged my about chess, too. Just look a the pawns. They are completely obsolete. Stupid game.
  16. I think it depends on the player. Helped my wife yesterday with some vampires on normal difficulty. For her it is just the right setting (She's not really a gamer, it's the only game she ever played apart from BG), for me it was like holding a cigarette in one hand a drink in the other, clicking here and there and watching the guys doing the rest. On the other hand PotD after the patch is not easy for me, even if I think it still could be a tiny bit harder, but other players still do it as if it was nothing. Maybe we need more difficulty levels?

  18. Same for the german translation. I said something about the translation of PoE1 a while ago. All I got was responses like: "It wasn't thaaaat bad" or "nowadays all games have bad translation". I think it's unbearable. Even more for Deadfire. I play it it english and in english it's a masterpiece. There is so much going on on the linguistic level. As for the german translation you can be glad if you still get what's going on. They even did the same mistakes as in PoE1 (Weapons have names like Penetration. I think repeating that bull**** isn't excusable it's just insulting. I wouldn't work with sch a company ever again.), but even without that mistakes, that's no way to translate such a game. The whole mood that builts up in the english version is totally butchered. And I normally don't use such strong language to critisize anything in that game. I'm not shure, but Josh Sawyer speaks german well enough, that he could see what's going on here. He's into linguistics and that kind of stuff, so one would assume that this would be important to him. I think it's very sad. They do such a great job delivering a kind of storytelling and language that is hard to find these days, even in fantasy literature and nothing, I repeat nothing of that survives the translation. In german language the game makes the impression that someone really dumb tried to be clever and wanted to tell a great story.
  19. Has anyone by any change already created such a thing? I decided to play Jan on my second playthrough but struggled with the creation of wem files (I couldn't find a software for Linux that can do it). Edit: Xan would be also OK.
  20. By that time I had little to no metaknowledge of the game. I set up a few traps than tried to beat him with whatever I had. I ran around in the room, tried to not getting trapped in the other dimension, or whatever it was he did to let your companions disappear, trying to get his attention to summoned creatures. I remember one time, I guess it was the first time, when I had one weapon that could hit him, but did little damage. That fight lasted forever, but I finally got him. I see what you did there. Players shouldn't have to use mods to bring the game to a normal state. Mods for making it super ****ing hard or twice as big are of course OK. Also that players shouldn't have to use mods does not mean, that it's never necessary. I'm definitely not one of those that claim that BG was a perfect game.
