  1. I voted for RDA.
  2. What can I say? The Evil Danes offered us more money. :D
  3. We just sold Canada a submarine that broke down before they got it home.
  4. That's it! It belongs to the penguins! Problem solved. We can just organise a democratic referendum and the penguins can vote... Hang on a second. Penguins?
  5. @Jodo: Force GoToImageShack. Yes, it is very cool, though.
  6. Beneath a Steel Sky Get it here.
  7. All we are saaaying, is give peace a chaaaance, All we are saaaying, is give peace a chaaaance, All we are saaaying, is give peace a chaaaance, All we are saaaying, is give peace a chaaaance.
  8. It certainly looks as though that's what they're doing, but I really would like to see what happened in the run-up to this event before I make my mind up. I wonder if they're being investigated.
  9. I blame DosBox. They've resurrected all these old video games in order to unleash the terrorist hordes upon us. I always thought there was something suspicious about them...
  10. I think I bought some Hanbee trainers in Japan once. They were good, but not especially so, but then I get through shoes fairly quickly because I don't take good care of them.
  11. The point I'm getting at isn't so much about who legally owns the land or the building. It's more to do with whether the local community feel that this new facility is part of their community or a foreign outpost that's nothing to do with them. If that sounds strange at first reading, yes I agree, but you'd be surprised how many development projects (schools, clinics etc.) end up decaying and unused simply because the local people feel distanced from them. People are sad when the facilities are lost, but feel that maintaining or reparing the facilities is beyond them, because creating them was also beyond them. In a sense, they're excluded from the process, and it's difficult to bring them in at a later stage when they weren't in at the start. I'm not saying any of this is necessarily true for your project, because you know the details much better than I do. Nor am I intending it as a criticism, because the alternative path (to ask local people to contribute) is equally problematic for a dozen reasons, including the fact that many people are so poor. I merely offer it as food for thought. It's also a pleasant distraction from my work.
  12. Isn't this whole argument getting a bit obscure? Obscure, get it?
  13. Interesting. I ask because I'm touching on this issue in the dissertation I'm writing at the moment. A lot of donors like USAID and the World Bank now insist that they'll only give money if the local community gives something, too - like construction material or free labour - to the project. It's very controversial - on the one hand, it means the community feels they 'own' and are responsible for the project, so it's more likely to be used and cared for. On the other hand, for the very poorest in the community it can be impossible to contribute anything, making them even more marginalised and feeling that they have no right to use the new facility, thus defeating the whole purpose. *sigh* I need to stop posting here and actually get back to writing my dissertation.
  14. Glad you had a good trip and you felt it was successful. I'm curious - did the local people help with the construction, or was it just your group doing it for them?
  15. Sacred. One word, rubbish game.
  16. I've hardly been insulted out, but yesterday was a Sunday. If he doesn't reply by the end of this working day, I shall send him a gentle reminder. However, as my first email was intended to be mocking rather than a genuine opening of debate, I doubt he'll take it seriously and respond. I'm comfortable with that. So long as I've irritated him and taken up some of his time, I'm happy.
  17. Thanks, it all works now. I needed both the mswinsck.ocx file (to get it to run) and the comctl32.ocx file to make the graphics look OK. These are now both clearly signalled on your site, so you'll probably have fewer problem reports. Thanks again for your help, the game is good fun.
  18. Not bad, but this is still by far my favourite: :D
  19. Nope, don't have it. It's not in the downloaded zip or in the extracted folder. Do I have some setting on my computer that's preventing me from seeing it? I went into the Folder Options and selected 'Show all files', but that didn't make any difference. And the link to your picture is broken as well. Maybe my computer is cursed.
  20. Sadly, if he really doesn't want to communicate with you, then you should probably leave it there. He's not obliged to respond to your emails or take them seriously. If I were you, I would send a couple of emails to games magazines and websites describing the content and tone of your emails and his responses, and drawing attention to his bad attitude. If a man in his position is genuinely unwilling to enter into serious discussions of his views and actions, then that's a matter of public interest.
  21. Now, now, England have won the ashes. Last time was in 1986, I think.
  22. You read my mind. :D
  23. Hmmm, England got beat at cricket. What are the odds? Once again, the sports journalists and commentators talked up our chances incessantly, just like they did before the rugby Lions tour to New Zealand, so once again the nation is shocked, surprised and dismayed that we've lost to the number one team in the world.
