Cinema and Movie Thread: coming 2 a theater near u

32A (2007). Irish film. Writing-wise...it was a little basic, all the beats you'd probably expect, but otherwise I thought it was quite nice. A little silly, a little cringey, a little funny, a little drama, a little sad - all the things you'd probably want in a girl's coming-of-age film, without ever being too much in any particular way, and executed in a nice style with good casting. Jared Harris...probably shouldn't have been in it. Too small and simple a part for him, he sticks out like a sore thumb in an otherwise very natural cast. I didn't initially place him, but I burst out laughing as soon as I heard his voice. A little too recognizable for his own good, I think. I don't think I wrote about it here, but I watched My Girl (1991), another girl-coming-of-age film, a while back with my nieces, and I can't understate how much better 32A is, despite how much simpler and straightforward 32A is. Hollywood films can just be so painfully dumb and misguided with all the silliness they pre-occupy themselves with in an attempt to earn back the money they cost for their big names, which a smaller foreign/indie film can just ignore in favor of...trying to make a decent film that will resonate with the demographic it's being made for. It's good for this kind of film. - Today

Yep, it was definitely an Amazon original. It was on network TV here which is what I was remembering. (Same was true for Orange is the New Black/ House of Cards and whatever the werewolves show was with Famke Janssen for Netflix, all were on network tv here but not in the US. And funnily enough, Rings of Power is on a domestic free streaming platform at the moment here) -

One, Stargate Origins. Which I successfully ignored so far, and yeah, it was apparently pretty terrible. -

Didn't they already do new shows and they sucked? Last I remember, there was some prequel show, but apparently it was just shait. Never watched it myself because the reviews sucked. -
I just got the same bug, however I elected to let Virgil go. This is my second playthrough with this choice but my first time encountering this bug. It tells me I need to debrief about Virgil but he just has regular dialog. I've also attempted to return to the building and Virgil is inside the room with the window but the door is sealed.

I thought Bosch was an original too. I vaguely remember Amazon airing some pilots and just continuing with the most popular one, and I think Bosch was the winner. There was this supernatural one I was interested in where these people lose some time in a building but in the outside world even more time passed and something something. -

Fallout is hopefully a good comparison, considering they've got some pretty good and committed talent involved. Not Nolan level in absolute terms, but in relative terms about as good as you could hope for. (The Jordan stuff was a bit complicated: the first book of WoT was written potentially as a standalone. Which is why it has some... oddities in its conclusion. All the books had a lot of foreshadowing, some for things that happened much much later so it was obviously planned from the start as more than three books; if it sold well. Still, compares well to a certain other fantasy author whose planned trilogy is meant to be 7 books if he could ever finish the sixth one more than a decade later) Amazon didn't make The Expanse, it just funded the last three seasons. The same people made all six seasons, and the first three were not Prime exclusives (->on Syfy in the US). (Pretty sure it was the same for Bosch, not really my thing but I'm 90% sure I remember it on network TV) -

Plus Fallout. Funny thing about The Wheel of Time is that the reviews/ratings improved every season, but that wasn't enough to keep it going. I thought from the start that the concept was hopelessly ambitious. Word has it that Jordan planned this as a trilogy, then dragged it out for 14 volumes. It was badly in need of significant trimming. -

The eyes and mouths are a little freaky, but you mostly get used to them in motion. I'm not saying it's my favorite, but...as far as modern anime art styles go, you could do worse. Do I think it would only take some lighting/color tone changes to make it look like horror instead? Yes...but beggars can't be choosers. My problem with this movie isn't the art, but rather the general direction. It's one of those movies where it has what you want...in theory, but something's just a little bit off, so you feel disconnected and it just doesn't really end up working despite its good qualities. Frustrating, as usual. Another one to add to my proof wherein I feel it's not actually the art/visuals that's the root cause of my issue with modern anime, it's the general direction and style overall...which the visuals are sometimes married to, but not always.

So, when is the Avowed Fall 2025 patch going to release? It's practically December already.

the skill checks in the game are so high and diverse, with level ups and points being so limited and far apart that I feel like Iโm missing half the game. Iโm about halfway through now and Iโm struggling to care about anything because I can barely get half the information and due to skill checks. At least with being able to respec I could tediously go to the ship every 5 minutes and back to slot things into the categories I need, but not being able to and the checks being so high is just ruining the story and gameplay for me

The ammo being so diverse and hard to find makes it so that I can only really use 1 or 2 guns consistently. I can barely get enough ammo to use anything else for more than 1 combat encounter, and itโs so expensive to make or buy in bulk quantities that I canโt make or buy anything else in the game

I think I've done this before, but Amazon did make The Boys, Bosch, Jack Ryan, Good Omens, Invincible, The Expanse, etc. The only thing they've messed up that I can see is The Wheel of Time. I know you dislike Rings of Power, but even with that, they aren't doing too bad with that track record. -

Yay, another beloved franchise ruined by Amazon, can't wait. -
"Kinda"? That is giving me "aliens eating people with down syndrome" vibes.
