Guys this election is important as its  a barometer for how much impact right wing populism is making on the EU countries. Our friends in Netherlands are in the frontline of an ideological battle that could lead to the disastrous breakup of the EU...its unlikely but possible

Anyway lets hope Wilders doesn't win as to me he represents a divisive and intolerant view for the future of the Netherlands

Go Wilders, also he need to gain at least 51% to become prime minister, which will probably never happen.

and as a side note - why everything conservative is suddenly populistic while giving away free money on welfare is somehow not viewed as populistic?

I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"

Funny how that works isn't it?

I won't vote Wilders for one important reason, and it's not even his rampant racism. No, it's that he's spent all this time complaining but has yet to propose a single viable solution for anything. He's not the option for right wing populists, he's the option for whiny complainers who listen to whiny rants, raise their glass and go "here here" but then don't give a flying hump what politicians actually do.

The best recommendation to vote Wilders. Go Wilders, go right wingers, go, go, go!

You guys cant seriously want Wilders to win? Name one constructive thing that will come from this political outcome ?

For some insane reason giving away free money is not populist in the US. Bootstraps demagoguery and whatnot.

Outside the US giving away money is totally populist, though. Keeping your country safe from foreigners is also populist, however. It's not an either/or situation.

what is not populist? I thought whole concept of democracy is actually populistic

Democracy is of course a populist concept but plenty of stuff is not populist. Often the truth is not too populist, for instance.

"Hey, we promise to spend extra money to change public schools for the better but you'll only know for sure that this is a good idea 10 to 20 years down the line. Vote for me."

"Hey we're gonna divert a sizeable portion of the taxes you pay to fight a vague environmental threat that won't affect you much but will definitely threaten the lives of your grandchildren or at least the lives of someone else's billions of grandchildren. Vote for me."

"Hey, I promise I will work hard to make your lives better, but my policies won't change diddly squat in the next 4 years. However my policies should improve your life marginally 6 to 8 years from now. In 10 years though is when things start to get really better unless, of course, you elect someone who has a different idea about governing, in the mean time. Vote for me."

Daily Mail readers.

That actually sounds like the vast majority of opposition politicians, most seem to be waiting for the government to self destruct rather than propose actual alternatives since those alternatives might alienate potential voters.

All the butthurt it causes would be very constructive. It's the #1 reason  why Trump winning was fantastic!

Volo I know you joking in some ways but why do you think the possible   collapse of the EU is fantastic?

The EU represents an important foundation of Western ideology which you are part of. I find it odd you think this election is about people feeling "butthurt "

I dont think Netherlands will vote for Wilders but it is something that should concern us

Also, read the link.  The Party of the "Europegroup"

 lost BIGLY.

Still, I find it hilarious that the same people who  are anti religion supposedly LOVE Islam even as Islam enjoys throwing gays off buildings and has a ahrd time allowing women to even drive let alone be free.

But, hey, love those Islamic countries, and let's bring their values of anti women hood, anti minorities, anti freedom philosophies to the west. BRILLIANT.

You don't understand how our system works. Wilders was one of the big winners and his party gained a significant amount of seats in parliament. His influence has only grown.

Yeah, nobody has any prospect of winning outright in a proportional system except under very unusual circumstances*. Since everyone said they wouldn't have Wilders in government he could not 'win' the election in that sense as he had no prospect of getting 50.1% of the vote, he could only win by getting lots of votes. Which he largely did.

He may have got less than he hoped for but he still got 2nd/ 3rd by the looks of it and even if he's given the cold shoulder officially other parties will be looking to attract his voters, which almost inevitably means moving closer to the more acceptable of his policies. Though the main problem there is that he does seem to have mostly bluster and rhetoric rather than actual policy.

*Ironically (or maybe not) the post apartheid elections in RSA would all have had a clear winner under a proportional system, even the last election with Zuma saw the ANC get 60+% of the vote and all the Nelson and Thabo ones had even more.

Man, So I work in The Hague, about 200 yards from parliament, I've never seen so many satellite dish vans and reporters there. And they didn't even interview me! two of my colleages got interviewed for foreign media, but me, noooooo.

Anyway, I voted pirate party*, so I'm not too pleased. At least Groenlinks has gained a great deal of votes. Still going to be another ****ing right wing conservative cabinet however, by the looks of it.

To quote the man who has "the best words"

Sad.

*Because of their stances on Privacy, civil rights, copyright, DRM and patent law, education, negative income tax, doubling seats in parliament, decreasing power of European commission in favour of the European parliament, and their intent to regulate drugs, they seem a great fit for me. They also would be the first and only party not run by technologically illiterate morons.

Oh and I forgot, they want to give asylum to Edward Snowden, which I support.
