Drowsy Emperor Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 Do you see anyone holding onto power Cuba in that kind of extremely polarized environment without being a dictator though. *shrug* I'd say the answer is patently obvious to everyone И погибе Српски кнез Лазаре,И његова сва изгибе војска, Седамдесет и седам иљада;Све је свето и честито билоИ миломе Богу приступачно.
Hurlshort Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 I should probably emphasize lifelong here. I have a problem with any one individual holding onto power like that indefinitely with no balances.
Drowsy Emperor Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 (edited) There is no stepping down from that position. The only way to leave power is to strike a deal, death or exile. And no one will choose any of those options unless they're already on the edge of defeat. Amentep Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 There are a number of alternatives to becoming a lifelong dictator, I imagine. I just don't get the need to defend the guy. There are very few presidents I would defend in such a way. I can't think of one, actually. Given the track record of the US, the alternative was getting replaced by a CIA puppet dictator. Sort of like Batista(who Castro overthrew) or Pinochet. While I wouldn't say Castro was good in the sense of being ideologically close to my ideal or good in practice, it's hard to imagine the alternative that wasn't as bad or worse. Its probably also fair to point out that Batista was showing no indications that he didn't plan to be a lifelong dictator himself. Unlike his first stint as President, he wasn't elected for president his second time around - he'd led a military coup after losing the election and installed himself as president. He reportedly had done many of the same things that Castro would later be accused of doing as well. I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

Chilloutman Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 well, what can i say? Finnaly? I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"

Drowsy Emperor Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 (edited) We can criticize Castro from the standpoint of individual ethics (as pointless as that is without taking into account the context), but no American president has a leg to stand on in this regard by comparison. The combined body-count of the ten US presidents Castro outlasted makes him look like a paragon of virtue and humanity. Besides, the Bay of Pigs is proof enough who the Cuban people identified with. Drowsy Emperor Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 I've never heard him say anything ridiculous. But I'm not exactly a Chomsky scholar either И погибе Српски кнез Лазаре,И његова сва изгибе војска, Седамдесет и седам иљада;Све је свето и честито билоИ миломе Богу приступачно.
Namutree Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 I've never heard him say anything ridiculous. But I'm not exactly a Chomsky scholar either "I didn't like Clinton at all, but her position's are much better than Trump's on every issue I can think of." -Chomsky in an interview post election. Major election issues: TPP- Any genuine supporter of socialism (or even any non-corporatist shill) should be 100% opposed to TPP. Trump is far better than Hillary on this issue. Syria, Libya, Iraq, and neo-con warmongering- Trump was critical of Iraq, opposed intervention in Syria. On this front a genuine leftist should see Trump as better. At the very least Chomsky should considering his past rhetoric. These are NOT minor issues either. Either he's lying now, lied about his goals/ideology in the past for years, he's a partison hack, or he's just an idiot. Screw Chomsky. Zizek>>>>>>>>>>>Chomsky "Good thing I don't heal my characters or they'd be really hurt." Is not something I should ever be thinking. I use blue text when I'm being sarcastic.

Gorgon Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 I kinda get the vibe that Chomsky really doesn't care one way or the other about public perception and that Harris cares too much and is a bit too self promoting. Na na na na na na ... greg358 from Darksouls 3 PVP is a CHEATER. That is all.
