Longknife Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Don't get me wrong, I know damned well the same thing will happen every single time, I just choose to voice my opinion all the same because I'm just a vocal person. I'm also not legitimately upset here or anything, I just speak passionately, and of course emotion is difficult to convey online. I point out my "I told you so"'s needing to be passed out because it's like holy hell, some of those people over there, I owe two generations of I told you so's. It's frustrating, but also incredibly fascinating to watch the same "mistake" be made over and over and over. I also like to continue voicing my opinion because I think that if even one person listens, then that's good. Again, I don't mean to sound like "FO4 will be crap and those that believe so have the superior opinion," it's more that I would argue the superior way to view any game is critically and with patience and thought, not knee-jerk pre-orders that don't serve any purpose when made so early. The disadvantage I see to pre-ordering is what you named and also that it encourages companies to adopt a tone stressing marketing rather than just focusing on gameplay. I do sincerely question how much of a hit a game takes when the company stresses marketing. Skyrim for example, the entire area around Riverwood was pretty fleshed out, almost as if it was given special care so that the press would likely buy into the idea that all of the game got as much care as that area. It also encourages companies to make a game that people will like enough to purchase the next one, but nothing special beyond that. Reading your post, sounds like they've succeeded. But yeah I recall Todd making statements where he'd say "most players wouldn't appreciate this feature" so they should axe it....well, he's not WRONG, but it's clear he's focused on a demographic that doesn't play TES or Fallout as thoroughly as you or I. He's addressing people who, for example, think "Caesar = bad cuz slavery bad" and just walk into the tent and reload multiple times to try and kill him without even bothering to try and talk to the guy or understand him, and to this day have not given his arguments a look. And not to be cynical, but you know as well as I do that TES 6 will suck. I think that in order for there to be improvement rather than the casualized style games they've been making (which again if you like that, by all means buy. I hate it though, thus I don't), they need a kick in the butt and a title to bomb before that happens. I was expecting FO4 to be my make-or-break title. Wanted to see if they followed any of the design choices of New Vegas or if it would be Skyrim 2.0 (which btw, yes, I do consider worse than FO3), but based on what we've been seeing, I may not even need to watch a Let's Play to draw conclusions. I will of course, but I fully expect "Skyrim with guns" at this point." I don't know if you can expect a voiced protagonist for the next TES game (I'd argue that Skyrim did well enough to support TES as a series on it's own merit whereas Fallout got this crap because it's a blatant copy of the Mass Effect style so people think "a sci fi title with that dialog style? I LOVE games like that!!"), but I bet you can expect more lackluster features ala Skyrim. "The Courier was the worst of all of them. The worst by far. When he died the first time, he must have met the devil, and then killed him." Is your mom hot? It may explain why guys were following her ?
Gfted1 Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 You preordered the CE didnt you? "I'm your biggest fan, Ill follow you until you love me, Papa"
Aoyagi Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Pre-orders are plague and the more people do it, the more resources will developers spend to encourage/push pre-orders. Obviously, the more content they make explusively for those who have patience of a 5-year old, the less complete experience is there for the mature customer base. The odds are Fallout 4 will be about as good as Fallout 3. I like how you say it as if that was a good thing.
Longknife Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 (edited) You preordered the CE didnt you? Me? I've never pre-ordered a collector's edition. Come to think of it, I've never actually pre-ordered. Wish I'd pre-ordered New Vegas though, but don't regret not doing so since I consider not doing so more logical. At least this time it feels like effort was put into the collector's edition instead of some $200 dragon statue, though really at the end of the day, I think most of us can agree those Pip-boys will end up on a shelf collecting dust, being functionally worthless. I like how you say it as if that was a good thing. I don't think it will be like FO3 anyways. I feel like something that made FO3 interesting was that at the beginning of the game you had like no stimpacks and ammo. Like your first playthrough before you realized VATs is broken, survival was tough. Made the game fun. Now though we all know that, plus I'm getting the vibe that laser musket is an early find and they will feed you enough ammo to play with it, so yeah. Not to mention of course that with less stats, I do expect more simplistic gameplay, and I do also expect the voiced protagonist to infringe on roleplay a bit. EDIT: Slightly off-topic, but this ties into how I feel with my criticisms: That guy's schtick is that he reviews the Sims series, but he's very critical, cynical and snarky about it and yes he'll tell you if an expansion is a blatant cash grab with no meaningful content. Found his channel because it was refreshing to see such an honest reviewer, and found his vids well before I even owned Sims 3. Despite his snark, it's super obvious he's a fan of the series. He's always talking about it and praising it as one of "the best games franchises ever." Despite this, people have apparently been thinking criticism = he hates it, thus provoking that video. I hate that simple-minded outlook where someone's criticism needs to be shunned cause it means they're a hater, rather than omg maybe we just don't want the series to become so watered down and focused on money that it loses itself. Hurlshort Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Actually the Fallout 3 collector's edition turned out very useful, both of my kids have used the lunchbox at one time or another and the pip-boy is still sitting on my desk at work. I also have a great GTA 4 cashbox and for awhile I was backing up my docs on a Saint's Row USB stick. I've always thought digital rewards were useless though. Why would I pay extra for a couple digital items in a game that has countless stuff already? This thread is so negative because Fallout 3 wasn't like Fallout 1 or 2. Bummer. But that ship has fully sailed. You are never going to be able to go back (unless you go play the old games or embrace stuff like Wasteland 2.) We all know what Bethesda brings to the table now, so whining about it over and over is not going to achieve much. I'm looking forward to Skyrim with guns. Personally I was a lot more hesitant about Oblivion with guns because they had no track record. Now I know exactly what type of post apoc exploration simulator I will be getting, and that is not a bad thing at all.
Hurlshort Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 The odds are Fallout 4 will be about as good as Fallout 3. I like how you say it as if that was a good thing. It is what it is. Your personal opinion of the game is going to color the way you see it. If you did not like Fallout 3, you will more than likely not like Fallout 4. This works vice-versa. It is pretty simple.
Gfted1 Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 So, kill XP and romances confirmed. The rending of cloth and gnashing of teeth will be epic! "I'm your biggest fan, Ill follow you until you love me, Papa"
Amentep Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 I read that as "Kill XP and Romance XP" for some reason. I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man
Amentep Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 ...... romances confirmed. ........ Great, now I've remembered "A Boy and his Dog" and can't get it unstuck from my mind... Rosveen Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 And not to be cynical, but you know as well as I do that TES 6 will suck. Shush. I'm an eternal optimist. Believe it or not, I actually enjoyed Skyrim, but it's partially because I expect different things from an Elder Scrolls game than from every other RPG I played (including Fallout, which is why I'm not a fan of FO3). I honestly think the shift gave use some interesting improvements, my favorite being perk trees; they have potential if handled well (not that Bethesda knows how, with their "no level cap! be all and do all!" attitude) My main gripe is that some of Skyrim's major weaknesses are in the areas that can't be fixed with mods, and that's what I'm worried about. But that's neither here nor there.

But that's neither here nor there. To be fair, I would say there's a SMALL chance it could be better. Like FO4's development did overlap with Skyrim, so it's understandable they share common elements, and perhaps they begrudgingly embraced that even after recognizing flaws with Skyrim. Thus, the next game - which saw no such overlap - will have the chance to try new completely different systems and improve on past faults. Still though, let's not kid ourselves, the chance is still small. If you mean "areas that can't be fixed with mods" to mean their NPC interactions and storylines? Oh yeah, that'll continue to be awful. I don't bother criticizing their storyline that much....and that's the biggest insult I can give. I criticize the RPG aspects of their games for example because I know Bethesda can do better. I don't bother to do anything but chuckle at how awful their plots are because holy crap they can't write worth a damned and thus there's no point in me expending any time or effort into critiquing it. Cantousent Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Edited out a cartoon for language filter reasons above. Then, skimming the rest, I saw what my gifted friend had to say. So, kill XP and romances confirmed. The rending of cloth and gnashing of teeth will be epic!Yeah, I'm not a fan of kill XP, but... come on! It's Fallout. They've all had kill XP. Even more, I'm not a fan of romances, but in a franchise where you can get into the porn industry, have relations with any number of hookers, hos, and floozies, all while leading up to your wedding day, I don't figure I can muster much of an argument against romances in FO4. 1 Fionavar's Holliday Wishes to all members of our online community: Happy Holidays Join the revelry at the Obsidian Plays channel:Obsidian Plays Remembering tarna, Phosphor, Metadigital, and Visceris. That too, but I was also thinking about never being allowed to fail. It permeats the whole game design: skills, stories, NPC interactions. I think this is what I truly miss. Not old attributes and eleventy billion sliders in character creator for their own sake, but specifically the experience of giving something up, whatever form it might take.

Darkpriest Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 (edited) If you are cloning ME gameplay and dialogs give us at least tactical combat control and abilities + companions... On a more serious note I'd rather play STALKER or Metro for post apoc shooters and on shooters front there will be doom and shadow warrior. Chilloutman Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 This is really stupid :/ Bethesda again showing they don't grasps even basic humor of interplay I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future.
