Archaven Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Back then, when using bow actually requires arrows. And definitely there's penalty on point blank with bow. Does this game has penalty on point blank with bow?
Archaven Posted April 17, 2015 Author Posted April 17, 2015 I see. Thanks. Kinda disappointing though. Back then you'll need a skill/talent upgrade for not having penalty on point blank. I have been switching to dual wield on point blank though with my Cipher. Kind of being a habit due to old games.
sim-h Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 I find my bows missing more at point blank - but that could be coincidence
Luckmann Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 (edited) Yeah, it feels weird that there's really no incentive to switch from a ranged weapon when you're in melee. I might be wrong, though, but I'm pretty sure that there's no penalty. If there is, I haven't noticed. The system is.. obtuse. Makes it pointless to switch weapons when you get engaged in melee as a ranged character, which should be a pretty big problem for ranged-focused characters. It would feel a lot more appropriate as for example a Ranger, getting out your dual sabres or something, once the enemy has run up to you and you can't run away. It doesn't have to be devastating, just significant, like a -10 to Accuracy and Deflection. Edited April 17, 2015 by Luckmann 3
View619 Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Yeah, the only "penalty" is an inability to engage... Maybe there really does need to be an accuracy and deflection penalty to using ranged weapons in melee without a specific talent (maybe). I know there are penalties in both table-top and IE games, so no reasonable excuse to not have it here imo.
Archaven Posted April 17, 2015 Author Posted April 17, 2015 Also i kind of missed the fire arrows, frost arrows, arrows of detonation :D. I think giving this back to Ranger it may be actually useful.
b0rsuk Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 So you can get the silly ranger ability Defensive Shooting, and get +20 Accuracy in melee without any penalties, really ? Character backgrounds explored (Callisca)
View619 Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 So you can get the silly ranger ability Defensive Shooting, and get +20 Accuracy in melee without any penalties, really ? Or you can have a choice of no talents and be forced to change your weapon set-up to melee or suffer defensive penalties like IE and table-top games. Honestly, a deflection penalty would be fine imo.

I think giving this back to Ranger it may be actually useful. No reason to give it specifically to the ranger. Just give us special ammunitions, really, and make the special kinds of ammunitions distinct between bullets, arrows and bolts. But yeah, I feel that the Ranger is... I can't put my finger on it. It feels bland, auto-attack-y. It's hard to even take active abilities, and many of them feel unflavoured. When I first saw the Binding Roots Ability, I was like "Aww yiis, I can take that and the Envenomed Strike Talent and I can be a bit more shaman-/nature-y" and then I saw that it's not even available until lvl 9. Most ranger "Abilities" are situational passives, it seems. But I digress. I too miss special arrows and ammunition. I want to be an aumauan fighter with Magic Bullet bullets, an elven ranger with Poison Arrows, and a dwarven rogue with piercing bolts. So you can get the silly ranger ability Defensive Shooting, and get +20 Accuracy in melee without any penalties, really ? But.. that's how it is now? No? Edited April 17, 2015 by Luckmann
Elerond Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 You get accuracy penalty in form of marksman talent that works only from distance and wood elves racial ability which also gives you accuracy bonus only against distant enemies. I don't remember was there any more talents or abilities that work only from distance. Arrows was feature on which community was quite split when it was debated if there is any merit in carrying normal arrows. I would guess that specialist arrows were one of those features that was cut out of the game because of lack of resources, as it was quite popular idea within community and developers if I remember correctly.

Well it's not really a penalty, you just miss out on your bonus. It might seem like splitting hairs, but it's an important distinction. The "dead zone" of those effects are restrictions imposed on a bonus. And far from everyone is a wood elf or have the Marksman Talent (well.. I guess most ranged specialists will take it, but when is debatable). And yeah, I don't think anyone wants us to have to carry normal arrows. I'm a stickler for a lot of stuff and think that game restrictions and hassles can act as positive limitations on the player's freedom, but I can't see any merit whatsoever to cart normal arrows around. On the issue of specialist arrows/ammunition, I think it's a good indication that there actually isn't any special Abilities that covers things like that, despite it being a very obvious way to easily inflate the number of Abilities a Ranger could pick from, or the number of base Talents. So hopefully it'll get added at some point.
archangel979 Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 There is no need to have penalty in melee when archery is crap. In IE games you could kite and bows did lots of damage.

Not a penalty if I neither have Marksman nor use a wood elf. A penalty would be something that affects all races and builds, unless there's a specific talent chosen to negate it. Valsuelm Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 We don't even have ammo.... or immunities..... or pre-buffing.... or encumbrance..... While there might be a penalty for point blank with a ranged weapon, it would be surprising as it certainly wouldn't fit the mold of dumbed down mechanics we've been given. 1
Atheosis Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 I'm pretty sure you get interrupted when using a bow and are hit by an attack just like spellcasting. I think that and a lack of engagement are the only downsides to it.

Emptiness Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 I find it very frustrating when I run my melee up to a ranged attacker and they ignore my melee and continue to ranged attack against a different character. I'm accustomed to being able to force a ranged attacker to switch to melee by attacking them with a melee weapon (from other games), and I think that not being able to use that tactic is something that PoE is lacking. I wish there was a small accuracy bonus when attacking someone you are engaged with who is not also engaged with you, and a small accuracy penalty when ranged attacking someone while you are engaged (by anyone). That would make it less effective and more dangerous to continue to make ranged attacks while an enemy is attacking you in melee (and also would make getting swarmed a little more dangerous). That, coupled with an AI that switches ranged attackers to melee weapons when engaged by a melee attacker, would add something beneficial to the tactical flavor of PoE combat.
