It's almost as if starting a war with people who feed your paycheck is a really ****ing stupid idea that only mentally unstable people would consider worth fighting or something.

Or people who don't know that in order to get money you need to actually put effort, as it comes from other people other than Mom and Dad.

I feel the worst things in gaming journalism are

 

- neo gamer columnists (people who missed classics and think Skyrim is the top of the hill. usually they are also hipsters though this is irrelevant)

- paid reviews (always have been.... luckily its fairly easy to detect)

- focusing on hyper-produced trash titles (mostly FPS and online cross-genre hybrids. they also often happen to be AAA titles)

 

 

-People who are not interested in gaming but in yellow press, but no bloody media outlet would hire their lazy asses so they stick with the one with zero requirements (Game Journalism, which up to this point has been basically blogging)

This whole Obsidian debacle....Of course I watched it close, as I'm sure you all did. Moment we got news it was Firedorn that opted to remove it with no pressure or force telling him to do so, I took that info and ran to KiA to try and calm people down. The snippet quoting Firedorn in the Obsidian megathread is thanks to yours truly for getting in touch with the mods ASAP. (pat on back for my minimal effort job)

 

  What's frustrating though, is the sheer amount of people that didn't give a damn and wanted to remain mad cuz being mad is fun. Holy hell, I mean check this out:

In a way I expected this. No group is flawless, both sides have derptards who just love drama. But having to go toe-to-toe with it and see how relentless it is yourself? Pretty disheartening. It's frustrating because it's like how many people have visited KiA, been greeted by THESE idiots, and then quickly ran away never to return with the belief that the whole of GamerGate is a bunch of overzealous reactionary jerks.

 

I REALLY wish there was a way to just weed out idiots in general. So annoying to have to deal with.

 

 

Also inb4 Bruce saying "MAYBE NOW YOU'LL SEE THE LIGHT LONGKNIFE." No I'd expect the exact same from Ghazi.

I call bs on it escaping initial vetting. No sensible person would have found any fault in it to begin with. Its not that it wasnt vetted, its that it passed. They're just being diplomatic because they want it to go away because its retarded. Its a non-controversy.

Because PR. It's that simple.

 

We don't know how serious of a vetting process occured, we don't know if said process initially conciously OK'ed his limerick or if some new worker who didn't know that kind of thing wouldn't be allowed OK'ed it or if it was legitimately looked over because all they did for "vetting" was scan the graves for offensive language or porn or something.

 

It's an empty statement that PR is safe to make because you cannot realistically investigate the truth of the statement. Even if we had video of an Obsidian employee vetting this specific limerick, laughing his butt off, liking it and giving it the OK before continuing with his work, PR can claim that that guy actually did not have the authority to make that decision or whatever.

 

 

This is PR, plain and simple. They claim it escaped because that looks good for the people who complained. They claim the removal of it is just very normal because that looks good for people who complain about the removal.

 

 

Regardless, Firedorn confirms for us how it went down, and how it went down is a method I for one find very acceptable. The people that continue complaining are essentially saying "A PR EMPLOYEE WASN'T STRAIGHTFORWARD AND DECEIVINGLY VAGUE IN HIS EXPLANATION AND THEREFORE SOMEWHAT DISHONEST TO A TINY DEGREE?!?" No derp dude, that's PR. That's what they do. There's no reason to hold Obsidian as a company accountable for this more than any other company. EVERY company would have a PR guy that would do something like this.

Most likely 'escaped vetting' or whatever just means that whoever read through it didn't see any negative interpretation. 'Escaped vetting' or similar is probably a bit of a disingenuous description in that case since it implies that the negative interpretation should have been caught when, really, you have to be looking to be offended by it to be offended. Still, it is certainly politic to say that since it implies it won't happen again, and I'd be certain they wish they had caught it earlier as this whole situation is lose/ lose for Obsidz whatever happens.

I don't think it's as bad as it seems. That sort of thing is always self reinforcing, because those that don't care much about it may only post once or twice- they don't care much, after all- but those that are outraged will post more often and are also encouraged to post more often by seeing others who agree with them doing so, or to dispute with those that don't care much. While it's a bit subjective and based on what I've seen only (and I ain't systematically reading through 40 odd pages, for my sanity) most of those who are expressing outrage/ boycott/ money back demands here don't even have kickstarter or PoE badges. And at least the replacement poem has a decent amount of properly directed snark, too.

 

And as for anyone expressing the desire to boycott Obsidian over it, well, you can always cheer up and have a look at the boycott CoD steam group jpgs to see how well the average gamer sticks to boycotts.

That's the thing: "escaping initial vetting" is vague. Purposefully so. That CAN be interpreted as them not finding it offensive initially, or any number of ways.

I have to admit that i'm still disgusted by the genocide advocate who first complained about this having their whining accepted and Mr Keldorn's limerick censored, i'm a little biased because after church this Sunday i'll be visiting my grandfathers grave, a quiet, brave and good man who served in the war and carried the scars to his grave. Such a victory of censorship by an immoral and ungrateful idiot just seems to spit on his and so many others sacrifices against genocide, but then again I suppose this may be me being too sensitive, and may be my Achille's Heel.

 

I still maintain that such people should never be catered to, but i'm going to relieve such feelings with a few miles of tabbing and some quality time on the heavy bag. Good morning all, have a nice Easter.

/Edit: If I would have been responsible for proofreading that stuff, I'd fly over everything and scan for offensive language only. After probably max. 1 hour I'd be done with the 500 entries and then would never think about it ever again.

It's standard for a company, dude. A company will always search the middle ground that pleases all sides if possible.

 

Personally I'm happy knowing that Obsidian gave Firedorn to leave the limerick in place exactly as it was and that he was the one to decide to change it for their sake. I don't think it's realistic to expect more than that from a company. That's just how it is.
