Journalism and sexism in the games industry

Weird to pull GTA 5 for that, game seems to have a violence on everyone approach rather than being about brutalizing women. I guess the scene where one woman gets killed by a jet engine was the trigger?

It is not often I say this but I agree with you Malc, what I don't get about the criticism around the GTA series is you don't have to go around killing people. You can choose to kill relatively few people, outside the main quest line, if you choose to.

Interesting post, so you have been harassed when people thought you were a women. So I assume you also agree that video isn't complete nonsense?

I don't think its complete nonsense. I think we can all admit that harrassment of men and women is a problem and that women by and far get more gender specific harrassment (ie sexual harrassment or clubhouse mentality) than men*.

Harrassment is wrong regardless of what kind of harrassment it is.

That said, they do have some problematic concepts in the video (like 25 which I mentioned above).

*it should also be pointed out that from a soceital expectation unwanted attention from women to a man is seen as still socially positive response to male/female interactions and so men may be less inclined to identify certain behaviors as harrassment even when they're unwelcomed.

Or maybe, just maybe people should go to the root of the problem. Harrasment does not happen out of thin air, it does not pass the membrane from another existence. I know i am quite radical for suggesting this, but maybe it comes from back home, maybe it comes from bad parenting and bad rolemodels for children. But we cannot have that, since that demands personal responsibility to look into ourselves as children and to as parents and realize the ugly truth about ourselves and how miserable we are. No, lets get rid of any responsibility and blame patriarchy, video games and toxic culture instead. The truth is simply too ugly to face directly. Oh btw, my professor says that there are 'truths' to begin with. That guy is sooo cool and postmodern.

- Case in point, look at this kickstarter, funded to 200% https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/deviever/console-ii-cartridge-based-multi-fx-guitar-pedal/posts/1071510

- The person behind the kickstarter also has a Patreon, ofcourse: http://www.patreon.com/PixelGoth

Well, it turns out that he/she couldn't deliver what was promised, refused to pay back to kickstarter backers and donated all the money to Feminist Frequency instead. All while trying to sell his/her music because otherwise people will enable harrasment.

If you examine any issue there is almost never a singular cause. Its a domino effect of a variety of things that fall together to form the pattern we see, which is why I don't address cause in general in my prior statements.

Knowing that its not the root problem doesn't mean that we shouldn't try to prevent the "symptoms". And honestly a lot of people need to learn that being asked for things you've said you'd deliver isn't harassment in and of itself (otherwise, bosses the world over are harassing their employees); just as harassment is a problem claiming harassment to avoid the consequences of ones actions is also a problem.

That has to be illegal, right?

Unless you could legally prove that the Kickstarter creator never had any intentions to provide the product/service it described then I don't think you'd have a legal case to sue them (and they have no money anyhow, aparently). Kickstarter's legal agreements put the onus onto the pledger for the loss of their pledge if what they backed falls apart so I doubt you'd have much room to go after them for re-embursement.

Is that person honestly asking the backers he/she ripped off to support his/her other projects?  That's some gall right there.

I wonder what Anita & McIntosh thinks of getting stolen money.

Well, i have to concede that terms like personal responsibility and good parenting are quite broad statements as well. They might encompass the problem described, they might not, depending on how they are defined.

Actually If they are moral or savvy they might realize that it would make them complicit on a crime. If someone was to brought fraud charges against the developer they might be drawn in because they profited from it.

I believe that dodging the IRS is grounds for legal trouble, but I'm not sure if the kickstarter policy forbids it. In any case, it's morally wrong at the least. I doubt any journalists will report on it, as she's one of the right crowd.

As an aside, I think I'm not going to bother with Kickstarter any more after the recent crap their people have said. Indiegogo and PayPal donations for me now.

Let's get back to people who matter. Supposedly, Gawker committed insurance fraud in regard to the lawsuit to the Hulk Hogan sextape scandal:

Contextually that really needs something about Hulk's '4" python'...

Yeah, kickstarter should itself not be OK with 'daisychained' kickstarters where people end up on-donating their funds to a third party, that's outright scam waiting to happen every bit as much as taking money for a project you have no intention of completing. If it isn't actively prohibited it certainly should be unless specifically mentioned in the pitch as an ancillary goal (like kick it forward).

I know Kickstarter has revised its rules a few times due to abuses; IIRC before September of this year, there was some very vague and inspecific language regarding the follow-through on projects.

The current rules do warn of legal liability if a project isn't completed or refunded, although there are still no indication of what they mean by "reasonable time".

I really hate it when people throw around privilege like it's some blanket thing. I have to work full time to put myself through college but I'm more privileged than an upper class girl because I have a **** doesn't compute for me.

I'm not sure why I'm surprised.

When Jack Thompson was spouting his **** ten years ago, we were all against him. What has changed? It feels like these "gaming journalists" don't actually play games anymore and so they don't know what is **** when it comes to games.

Attack GTA series as sexist and 'violence versus women' is completely stupid since those games allow you to attack everyone. But, we all know, nobody gives a crap if males get mass murdered.

Honestly, what the hell is happening? These journalists first attacked gamers and now are attacking developers.

Edit: I mean who do they think is their audience? If they alienate gamers and developers who is left to read their ****ty opinion pieces?

I mad. I take break.
