"Bioware purchase + cost of TOR got to be over a billion dollars total! That's has to be the biggest financial disaster in gaming history. No wonder heads have to roll."

Garbage hyperbole.

"ut there's not a snowflake's chance in hell of them ever making their investment back."

More falsehoods. EA bought BIO 5 years ago and their games have all sold 2mil+.

If purchase was so horrible why is EA going out of their way branding everything BIo x. If the BIo brand was so horrible you'd think they would avoid using it as much as posisble.

buit, hey, these are the same people who think DA and ME series are so over yet DA3 was just announced and more ME content is on the way. Not so damaged.

DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they hire people to go to the new studios? I'm unsure of the specifics because I generally don't follow Bio, but hiring to fire seems like bad practice.

I don't know. Brand name and operations cost don't really tie in together.

Bioware was bought because they had a strong brand name that drew people to their products, and because the EA people thought they'd make that money back with current and future products.

The brand name is still strong, which is why it's used for stuff like C&C. Whether or not EA will make up the money it cost them to buy Bioware in the first place is another issue entirely.

Posted (edited)

As spider said, branding all EA **** with bioware name is good idea, because Bio is still very strong brand and to be honest, name Bio Austin brings less bad will that would bring EA Austin amongst gamers.

So this is just logical... If they sold 2mil + of each game it is Income of 120mil for a single game... ME2, ME3, DAO, DA2 and SWTOR = 600 mil income, but you have to add costs for development, distribution, server maintenance, and not all of these 2mil copies were sold at 60 bucks... and of course the bonuses for all the high management members...

Soooo in the end I really can not see more than 200 mils back in pure profit and I am highly optimistic with this wild guess (and I tried to account all the DLCs and projects 10bucks ripoff to add to this number)... In 5 years... So they will be ****ing happy if they get even with the buyout in less than another 10 maybe 15 years...

If this is not a prime example of terrible investment by a publicly traded company, which is trying to maximize short-term profits, I do not know what else is...

Edit: And if the development cost of SWTOR was really 150mil+ as rumours say, then the number made in 5 years would me more allong the line of 100millions... How the hell it is still possible that CEO did not step down yet...

You guys are throwing out a lot of numbers, but 5 years is not actually a long time when it comes to an investment. Bioware was a major investment for EA, and I doubt they expected to make everything back within 5 years. The main goal is to extend market share, which they've done. If it takes 10 years to recoup the costs of the merger, that is totally reasonable for a business like this.

This is all pretty baseless speculation.

edit: Until you actually see a CEO or someone stepping down in disgrace, there is very little to all these claims. The doctors are simply retiring. They are filthy rich.

Maybe if Valve would be doing open world FPRPGs, your statement would be valid.

But it won't matter to you anyways 'cause it's gonna use that horrible and intrusive Steam DRM, right?

And no, I think Fallout 3 was not really much an RPG to begin with. An open world FPS mostly, with some more options.

Half-Life³ open world would just be the next step in the evolution of Bethesda RPGs. Getting rid of all that annoying dialog and filler stuff, going over straight to the combat.

There is nothing wrong with the Bethesda model. Except they can't write. Valve can.

And the engine.

You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that?

The Battlefield series is on sale on Origin at the moment. You can get Battlefield 3 for £10 and it's probably one of the best fps games available at the moment. Just mentioning

Heh, because Gordon talks so much.

"only when you no-life you can exist forever, because what does not live cannot die."

There actually is a lot of well written conversation in all of the Half-Life, Left 4 Dead and Portal games, even if it's often someone talking at you in a lot of cases.

Posted

Yeah, but it is not dialog where you are actively switching topics and stuff. These are scripted (cinematic) sequences. That's really not the same, especially if you are writing them. Especially because Gordon doesn't talk, so you are limited to such sequences anyway.

I trust nothing I hear from Valve until I have the game in my hands.

I get what you're saying but I disagree. I think Valve have demonstrated a wide variety of technical and creative skill in their writing over their various titles and I don't see it being beyond them to put branching questions, exposition and choices into conversations directed at the player.

Btw open world elements doesn't = actual open world game. It could just be a large non linear segment in a linear game.
