That's the vanity items. But people are worried that based on the internal discussions, you can buy Tech3 ships and equipment for dollars rather than working for the ISK to get it. Also, that kind of stuff is just out of thin air in the game universe, which goes against EVE's whole player run economy (sort of anyway) aspect.

Yes, it's the beginning of the end.

Excellent!

Huh ? Why, excellent (other than you people disliking MMOGs, anyway :p) ? Might be overreaction, but was a leaked email from the CEO which has an odd attitude and seems dismissive of the fans' rejection of 'pay to win' type of sales. Hopefully this won't start some sort of death spiral for EVE, or EVE as it is now, seems unlikely for the former, latter seems likely. Impressive amount of rage though.

Probably because EvE is known for being a little to much 'Srs buzness' compared to the other MMO's

Part of its charm for some, not a bad thing. :p Anyway, myself I'm not too pissed off about it until they actually DO make T3 stuff, weapons, implants, etc. available with this Aurum currency.

I just sustain myself with bitter fanboy tears. The more serious the business the sweeter the tears, mmmm.

Reading this is sorta, kinda, scary a wee bit. Including a bit about a russian Aluminum magnate who literally crashed a part of the in-game economy, and an indonesian nightclub hacker who ruined somebodies job (which was the more legal option... the other option being to illegally kill the power of the guys house to kill his in game space ship).

I like to think of myself as an unhelpful bystander, actually.

Also something about schadenfreude.

Yep, about the answer I expected.

Thank you, thank you. I'm here all week.

So, another tale of horror from the video game industry.

The games industry really needs to group the **** UP!!! ARGH!

It's the plane pilot slave system, pilots are severely underpaid and overworked but they don't complain because they love flying airplanes and lack the means to do so. The same way that a lot of people in the game industry (if not all) love games and lack the financial means to do so on their own.

I mostly think that it hurts production, as it was the case here.

Yeah, ok, I admit, I'm thinking of the big airline pilots, but generally, the top 100 earners in an airline will be the CEO + pilots.

I think it also depends heavily on job security laws and unions. If you have neither then it's really hard to stand up for your rights.

There is a writers guild, so I see no reason not to have a gamedev guild. :>

It's prime example what happens without strong unions and rules to protect workers from the exploitation. It's so bizarre that highly educated and skilled workforce don't do anything and is content to be treated like slaves.

I'm waiting for the next story where its revealed some large developer was strapping its employees to a rack and covering them with leeches.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

But with a fear of being blacklisted by every publisher I don't see anyone within the industry standing up for an union, mostly people who get fed up and leave.

Probably the closest thing the industry will get to a union is the actual company employees banding together to do stuff.

But then there is the fallout that's going to come out from the publisher side: firings, legal preceding, and there are a lot of available scabs. I simply do not see this happening within the industry, specially since there isn't a guild or something resembling it to organize a strike.

Edit: The most likely scenario is to make publishers believe is in their best interests to treat developers right, way of a company's success and further expansion using a developing model that offers both good results and doesn't exploit developers.
