Humodour Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 So, what games released in 2008 were worth buying? They don't need to be 90% epic hits, just fun and entertaining (read: above average). A small description would be nice. PC only. You can list console titles if you want, just make sure you clearly mark them as such in your post. Cheers.
Slowtrain Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 I believe I bought 2 games this year. ALthough it is hard to remember all the way back to the start of the year. I know I bought Far Cry 2 and The WItcher Enhanced both for PC. Interestingly, I encountered game stopping bugs in both of them. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.
Pidesco Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 World of Goo, Devil May Cry 4, Trials 2, Audiosurf, Hinterland. Morgoth Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Fallout 3 MGS4 GTA 4 Gears 2 And that's it. Rain makes everything better.

Morgoth Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Which ones of those did you play on the PC? Fallout 3. Oh yeah I also bought L4D, but that only was cool for the first few days. 2009 will be a much better year for PC games. Rain makes everything better.
CoM_Solaufein Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 There was only one good game in 2008 and that was Fallout 3. Everything else I didn't have any interest in. Slowtrain Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 There was only one good game in 2008 and that was Fallout 3. Everything else I didn't have any interest in. I will be buying FO3 and STALKER: Clear Sky in 2009. Anything released in 2009 I will probably buy in 2010. I've decided it's best to stay well behind the new release curve of game releases. It means I always have something to look forward to at any rate. :/ Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. Hurlshort Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Gosh, I bought a lot. I'll put them in order of excellence. 1. Fallout 3 - best game in a few years for me. 2. Lord of the Rings Online - MoM - legendary 3. NHL 09 - still playing it 4. GTA4 - Pretty amazing city brought to life 5. Saints Row 2 - May turn out better than GTA4, not sure yet 6. Fable 2 - Good...still haven't finished it yet 7. Wii Fit - great family fun 8. Spore - Meh, at least my wife likes it 9. Braid - should be higher, forgot about it for a bit. Unique. 10. Gametap - not a game, but this service has been fantastic, letting me play many games I wouldn't have otherwise.
Slowtrain Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 The number of games I have been buying has been dropping every year. The two this year is probbaly the lowest total since the mid-90's. For the most part it is simply that I can't afford to take chances on games financially. If there is any risk of major bugs or just stuff I won't like, I really can't afford to part with the money. Especially bugs. Spending $50 on a game I won't be able to play is just out of the question these days. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Bad Company : Lots of fun destroying everything. Short single-player, not enough humour used and lots of potential. Bioshock: Best shooter I've played. Ever. Unfortunatly flawed with its no death gameplay, but everything else was amazing. FEAR: Creepy. Very creepy. Slow-mo combat was fun too. Orange Box: HL2 sucked, Portal was awesome, didn't get to try TF2. Dead Space: Lots of fun, very jumpy and actually has a decent story. Nice job, EA. "Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"
Hell Kitty Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Saints Row 2. It was on 360, but according to wikipedia it's out on PC today.

karka Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Left 4 Dead: It's an OK game. Trials 2: Second Edition: One of the best indie games ever. World of Goo: Another OK game. Highly overrated though. Fallout 3: Still playing.

I'm in the same boat as you with those last two...I gotta get on my game and run through some RPGs though because I was just reading about Drakensang, which is coming in February. This looks really cool, the images are great and it's from the Dark Eye realm which is pretty legendary in the world of RPGs: http://www.drakensangus.com
Diogo Ribeiro Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Reason I haven't bothered to get FO3 yet is because my system can only pass the minimum requirements, but not the recommended. I like the whole pseudo retro-futurism stuff, but playing at 15 frames per second like old movies is just taking it too far. Audiosurf and Spore do get my vote, though, even if the latter wasn't exactly all I hoped for but still managed to be entertaining.
LavenderGooms Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 LotRO MoM and FO3, which I didn't think I would like but I did.
Dark_Raven Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 2008 was the year of dung when it came to games. Totally sucked. 2009 dont look any better Hades was the life of the party. RIP You'll be missed.
Bos_hybrid Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Left 4 Dead (Miles better then TF2) Mount & Blade (Great game, especially with mods) (Yes I know been out longer, but only discovered it this year) Fallout 3 (Very good game) But the Best game of 2008: Sins of a Solar Empire Best game of 2008 no doubt. Console mention: Fable 2 (Any game where you can run around naked, drunk and fart on nobility = win)
Calax Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Fable 2 (Any game where you can run around naked, drunk and fart on nobility = win) by that reasoning Saint's Row 2 should take the gold. Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition! Kevin Butler will awesome your face off.
Volourn Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 NHL 09 on xbox 360. This was a massive failure for me personally rpg wise. DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.

Krookie Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 NHL 09 on xbox 360. This was a massive failure for me personally rpg wise. Hopefully they'll continue with the Be A Pro mode, flesh it out a little more. I want to deal with the press and develop a reputation in the league.

Hopefully they'll continue with the Be A Pro mode, flesh it out a little more. I want to deal with the press and develop a reputation in the league. I've been playing the Pro mode for awhile now with NCAA and Madden, so I was actually pretty happy with how much they did manage to make it a unique experience. Of course they have a long way to go to improve it, but it was a good start to the concept.
Volourn Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 L0L You guys are funni. I eman the year was a failure RPG wise; not NHL 09. Doofuses. DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.
