So you need to be European to enjoy Half-life 2? :)

Seems like it.

Don't get me wrong, HL2 was OK, but only Ravenholm and Episode 1 came close to matching HL1's motivation/adventurousness and atmosphere.

Yeah, it's pretty much Ravenholm every time I go out in the dark. Sometimes I get the urge to chuck circular saw blades around just for the hell of it.

Actually it is probably most interesting if you have been to one of the cities that has that kind of architecture, so you can relate. I have gotten too used to the style I guess.

I remember the whole HL2 experience was a blast when I first played it on day one release. Took me 17 hours to finish it, in two days. Awesome. But now I wouldn't dare to touch it again, because it's old and boring. Same for the Episodes. I need new fresh Valve fodder, but no full-price MP mods like TF2 or L4D please. They gotta do sometime a new singleplayer IP, besides of HL.

They did make Portal. I hope that they will give the HL story a fitting and epic finale, it would be sad if they dragged it out like some horrible sci-fi show. It would be cool to see what they can think of next, they certainly have the talent to make another epic series.

Valve didn't make Portal, they just merged the Narbacular Drop team and integrated the game idea into their overall world. Sort of. :(

They didn't make it per say, but without them the Portal that we know and love would have probably never happened.

Comparing L4D to Portal is like comparing the zombie version of Monopoly to Tetris with cake.

That analogy is perfect.

I never figured out what's so great about Portal. It's good, but all in all it's just another puzzle game.

Edit: Btw, all the signs in episode 2 are in Russian.

There are a lot of places in Eastern-Europe that use Cyrillic, also it is possible that Valve just chose Russian because it is the largest and probably the easiest to find people who can translate it for you. Interesting observation, though.

Portal is great because it is clever, funny and quirky. It has an incredibly minimalistic and distinct art design. Even though it is a puzzle game in it's heart, it manages to tell the story GLaDOS, a lonely and increasingly mad computer AI while not taking itself to seriously. It is very different from most of today's games and it is short and easy enough for anyone to play.

Even if GlaDoS wasn't there, Portal would still be great. Those are some very inovative and fun puzzles.

"Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"

Sure, but without the story it would be Half-Life without the guns. I enjoyed the puzzles, it's the story and presentation that really made it a great game instead of a good one.

I heard rumors that they were putting the portal girl into Half Life continuity and that Gordon might get the portal gun in the next episode.

Again, merely rumor.

I saw a flyer on a bulletin board at school last week. It was looking for research assistants at Aperture Science.

At first, I thought it was a weird coincidence until I noticed that the flyer said that all assistants would be provided cake. Obviously its a Portal joke, but I wonder what happens when people not familiar with the game call the number that was provided. Hmm...I'll have to do it tomorrow.

Battlefield 1943 http://pc.ign.com/articles/952/952301p1.html

I got all excited at the title, but then I read they are going with unlimited ammo and regen health. I'm not sure about all that, seems like they are cutting a few of the great parts of the original.

If they add a MMO style leveling system a la CoD4 and BF2142 I might still dig it.

I laughed when I realised they used the exact same explosion models from Bad Company.

I posted about this in another thread, but if you're an RPG fan then I'd check out Drakensang. It's based on the Dark Eye RPG rules system and adapted from a ridiculously successful German game. I've had my eye on this for a while and the game looks awesome...totally bringing back the old school RPG

I am not sure about the unlimited ammo either, as well as health, but we'll have to see.

Will planes and tanks have unlimited ammo? If it's just the soldiers it could be moot, as I found I so rarely ran out of ammo it was never an issue.

As a sniper, I ran short of ammo quite often, and it was a challenge to get a supply drop. I think it just depends on the map and longevity. As a basic grunt I never survived long enough to need ammo :shifty:

The video does look fantastic, so I guess we will see. They are also limiting the battles to 16 vs. 16. I'm not writing it off, I'm just a bit skeptical. It still will probably be a first day buy for me.

I thought it was just supposed to be a XBLA/PSN type of game, rather than an actual big Battlefield title.

Battlefield 1943 is a full on PC title. I'm not sure if they are bringing it to the consoles. I linked the article!

Do we get personal force shields to go along with the regenning health and unlimited ammo? Perhaps our own Death Star orbiting high above?

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.
