^We need new board rules: Do not post in threads about games you obviously do not like.

I'm hoping they'll manage the same AI intensity, but vary the environments and enemies more. They don't even have to open up the game any (which I usually suggest) if they can add a few surprises along the way instead. FEAR still has one of the best combat AI's I've ever seen in a game, that goes a long way.

... he's got a point. we wouldn't have much discussion if all we saw was positive.

Fallout 3 for example.

"Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"

I recently played through FEAR and it wasn't that impressive. I'm not sure whether its because FPS games seem mostly the same to me or because it was over-hyped.

The environments were bland, the enemies were the same 3-4 types of soldiers and the AI didn't seem that great. My tried and true tactics of approaching crouched and hidden and then shooting from cover seemed to work fine for this game. I didn't see enemies really reacting in a smart manner. Maybe its because the way I play.

It was scary playing at night with the lights off though.

I had a more fun time playing through Prey.

I wonder if it's going to be the same encounter 10.000 times interspaced with lame ghost mumbo jumbo cutscenes you can't skip.

Actually, this change between intense but short battles in confining spaces, and the "ghost mumbo jumbo" you call it, was quite attracting to me. FEAR had cool action, style, and a healthy portion of eeriness. Sure, no jungles and open spaces like Far Cry, but that's not what FEAR is about.

I hope that Monolith/WBI also bought the NOLF name back.

Btw, the official release date is February 10th, 2009. ;)

I like FEAR. Hopefully this will be another good game.

One of the disappointments about FEAR was my own fault. For some reason, I thought the game would involve investigating different types of paranormal and weird events. Sort of like the X-Files, where each chapter or so of the game would take place in a unique environment, perhaps even around the world. It was a big disappointment when I learned that the creepy girl was the primary plot and the game took place entirely in warehouses and office buildings.

FEAR does have fantastic atmosphere, ambient music and a few decent scares. I think they just needed to cram some more interesting environments and a few extra enemies in the game. That was something about their previous games like AvP 2 and the NoLF games. They had tons of great and unique environments.

Also, about the name change, IGN has an article on it. One of those who had the rights to what deals. http://pc.ign.com/articles/908/908390p1.html

Prey > FEAR :)

Prey > FEAR

It appears that all you are concerned with is just looking at interesting environments and stuff. The combat in Prey was horrendous, and the organic guns were stupid. FEAR has some of the best firefights ever, and it was really fast and hardcore if you didn't use slowmo.

Also IGN has the box art up

I thought that FEAR's combat was awesome. The graphics were damn good too. Everything else in it was either badly done or didn't fit the gameplay or both.

The firefights in FEAR were exciting at first, but it just became tedious as the game went on. I remember how exciting it was to finally run into the flying robots, hoping to fight them for an extended period only to find there were only like 5 in the game. It was also hard to get into the idea of being part of this special squad and ALWAYS being alone. It would have been nice to have some team firefights early in the game before the whole squad was goopified.

Prey on the other hand managed to throw some new things into the mix as the game progressed. There was a lot of imagination and artistry put into the game that made up for its faults. Also, what was wrong with the guns? I thought they were fun to shoot and the goop gun and freeze ray were cool.
