Kaftan Barlast
This is kind of a strange question, but I have close friend who is currently serving with a Swedish detachment in Africa. He only gets 2min of satelite phone now and then, and he uses that to call his mum and girlfriend, but I can reac him through text messages. Now, what do you write to cheer someone up who is far away, fighting in another country? I can imagine there are things you want to hear, and others that would be counterproductive sort of. With Iraq and Afghanistan, I imagine some of you also have friends and family in the military. What do you say to them? Sand
Send a care package and photos of everyone back home. Care packages could have shaving kits, cookies, dried meats, and the such. Photos from all his friends and family wishing him well can also be a real cheer to. taks
hard to say. my brother was in iraq the first time around and he was in an even more difficult position (from a contact standpoint) because concepts such as the web and text messaging didn't really exist then. fortunately, once the quick battle was over there was not nearly as much tension then as there is now. i.e., once they beat down the iraqi forces there wasn't as much concern about getting shot or blown up from an insurgent bomb (my brother was on a base camp which was otherwise secure, he didn't have to venture off camp at all). i'd say just be positive, let your bud know you miss him and you hope he returns safe, throwing in odd bits about cool stuff at home. that's what we did. taks PS: care packages as sand suggests are good, too. my brother loved 'em. Sand
Home newspapers. One thing that I missed when I was deployed back when I was in the Navy was reading up current events in the local hometown news. theslug
Send him a flesh light and lubrication. No joke I read things on the internets about this kind of stuff. There was a time when I questioned the ability for the schizoid to ever experience genuine happiness, at the very least for a prolonged segment of time. I am no closer to finding the answer, however, it has become apparent that contentment is certainly a realizable goal. I find these results to be adequate, if not pleasing. Unfortunately, connection is another subject entirely. When one has sufficiently examined the mind and their emotional constructs, connection can be easily imitated. More data must be gleaned and further collated before a sufficient judgment can be reached.

Kaftan Barlast
Those are great tips, Ill try to find out if its possible to send him stuff, but so far all Ive got is texts on the mobile. What exactly is Sweden fighting in Africa ? We have soldiers doing peace enforcement in Tchad as part of a co-op EU operation to stop the crap happening in Darfur and the surrounding regions. They protect refugees and civilians from guys in toyota jeeps with AK-47's. The Swedish military has been active in Afghanistan for the past few years aswell. Nick_i_am
No, it's a pretty universal thing, armies generally discorage consorting with local prostitutes due to health and safety risks, so you'll generally find all kinds of interesting porn in just about any barracks of a western army around the world. Walsingham
Pr0n is certainly going to be well received. But also just writing about lots of the little things. Who's repainting their house, what the weather has been like, it all allows you to escape back home and away from your troubles. Music is also a massive lifesaver, as well as comedy. If the situation gets really dire send him something completely and utterly pointless, like a hawaiin shirt, christmas lights, or a junior lieutenant. "It wasn't lies. walkerguy
IF it were a conventional war, they'd have no time. As it is, they've got time to relieve their "testosterone boredom." Personally, I don't think they'd be "bored" THEY"RE IN A **** WAR! They still might "want some" but they're not going to be getting overly... how to put it? Get it though, do you? Walsingham
Dude, you're mental. You think conventional war is nothing but charging around in a FPS? It's 90% being told to hurry up and wait, 5% trying to find a decent latrine, 3% pr0n or talking about pr0n, and 2% pants-wetting terror. Then you get hit by indirect fire. I have this verified by several relatives, and two ex-girlfriends. "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe.
