Agreed. I wish they'd borrow some of the artistic style from Bladerunner too. Of course, that would assume they'd make the game more expansive than just a spaceship with aliens or a planet with a mining farm on it.. just as I had hoped!!1!

 

I'm still hoping we'll be positively surprised by their ambition level this time. Aim for the stars and you might at least hit the moon.. or something like that.

Doesn't Obsidian have that guy who did most of the writing for Bloodlines? If he writes for this game, it will be a winner.

Are you serious about Mitsoda being at Obsid? That's excellent news! Goergia isn't Aliens though, is it? A shame, since there are parallels between the Vampire and Aliens settings... and I'd just plain like to see him working on Aliens.

Yeah, I've been thinking about it too. Phantasy Star V? Magic Knight Rayearth? Sakura Taisen? Sequel to Bioware's Sonic game? And all of these possibilites featuring yet another version of the love story of Nameless One and the Old Hag.

I think its very unlikely that it will be any of these classic Sega RPGs, infact I assume it will be a completely new IP from Obsidian not based on any previous license, Which would be cool. I heard a rumour a long time ago now that it would be based on the CIA or FBI or something like that, But I think it's probably pure speculation.

 

On a side note, I would be so excited if Obsidian would work closely with Sega's former 'Team Andromeda' guys and make a sequel to the Panzer Dragoon Saga RPG, that game is truly one of the best Japanese RPGs ever made, It feels like a Mix between JRPG and Western RPG with a fantastic atmosphere and unique game play.

Really? Have to try it then, since I put the genre aside for lacking variety in gameplay or writing.

So this one is the new franchise and the Alien one was kinda new but kinda old franchise. I wonder how CIA themed game would look in JRPG style? Anyway, it would have been kinda funny (in a sad way) if it was a sequel to Bioware's Sonic game.

Good luck finding a copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga, Its not only rare and on the Sega Saturn but its bloody expensive now days too, I've seen a factory sealed copy go for a few hundred dollars.

 

Compared to todays RPGs Panzer Dragoon Saga is dated in all areas but it's still awesome.

 

I would get rid of the idea of a single protagonist entirely. Instead, you start out with a squad of six or eight characters. Whichever character makes it to the end without dying is anointed protagonist.

 

"You are the chosen one. You were chosen by the aliens not killing you. Go forth and not die."

 

That could actually work!

btw, insofar as the earlier poindexter v. twitchy debate, Gromnir is firmly in favor o' poindexter. don't like twitch games... is just one reason we tend to prefer crpgs. historically speaking, crpgs is more demanding of our created character's manual dexterity than Gromnir's. if had wanna play twitchy games, then we would play more shooters... which we don't play at all.

 

josh is in favor o' the twitch? fine. great. whatever. crpg is a pretty meaningless term, but western crpgs, for the most part, has chosen the poindexter route over the visceral, and Gromnir prefers things that way.

Then how do you propose that a poindexter system work in real time, then? "Make it turn-based" is no answer, we both know that's not going to happen. Unless you thought the ranged combat system in Bloodlines was adequate I'd like to hear your thoughts on the matter.

as has been pointed out by josh, all the ie games were pretty much at the poindexter end o' the scale. give strategic pause and problem is solved.

Never will and never should happen, Yu Suzuki has to produce/direct Shenmue and Sega AM2 have to develope it thats the only way it will BE Shenmue. I don't think anyone else could recreated it, Don't get me wrong Obsidian would probably do a very awesome job but it wouldnt BE Shenmue...
