they are the opposite of every value this country was founded on.

You mean independence from Britain and alliance with France?

I think he means they're tea drinkers. This country was founded believing in coffee.

I still say that has to be the daftest reason for a revolution ever. I mean it was a luxury item, and you don't even drink it anymore!

It wasn't over the tea, really. It was over being taxed; but noit really being represented in British politics while still having to follow British laws. The tea tax was an excuse.

As for the topic, big whoop. So some guy just wanted to get lucky. *yawn*

Most far right stuff is founded on hypocrisy, because intolerance for others is usually founded on self-hatred. [/swingeing generalisation]

I could not care less what his sexual preference is Mkreku. What really galls me is that he tried to use his status as a senator to bully his way out of trouble.

Thinking about US politics is really discouraging right now. I can't vote for Democrats because they are socialists and they are the opposite of every value this country was founded on. I can't vote for Republicans because they are corruptred down to their very core. The Libertarians cannot mount an effective campaign because they can't get past the whole drug thing and the whole mexican-proof fence thing, and the whole gold standard thing, and the whole withdrawal-from-international-orgs thing, and the whole "young black men are a menace" thing. The Greens are communists. No one has ever heard of the Constitution party. The Reform party died as soon as it started. No matter where you turn you are screwed. That is why we end up voting for the candidates who scare us the least.

fixed for spelling and Ron Paul.

I'm just surprised to find out Guard Dog believes this country was on the principle of opposing social welfare. It does indeed bring a new understanding of history to light. Here I thought the country was founded on concepts of ensuring the liberties of citzenry threatened by a detached government. (*cough* Republicans *cough*) Which would put them both as equally wrong in that they're both threatening different liberties with different detachments.

The treatment that thousands of parents voluntarily send their barely pubescent (male and female) offspring into, when they offer them up as sacrifices Washington DC interns is more disturbing than what a bunch of people want to do in a public convenience.

The country was founded on the principles of Federalisim. That means the government with the most power over your life should be the one that is closest to you and the one you have the most influence over. To my thinking that is the State government. Since the days of FDR the federal government has been usurping more and more power that the 10th amendment forbids it to have. And nothing is ever done about it because it would be politically unpopular. I have no problem with social welfare per se but I do have a problem when Uncle Sam asks me to ante up my taxes to pay for things like Welfare, Food Stamps, etc. The constitution does not empower the federal government to do these things. If the State of Florida asked me to pay for it because there was no such federal program I would not have a problem with it.

To quote Reagan "The government that can do anything for you can also take everything from you."

Which would put them both as equally wrong in that they're both threatening different liberties with different detachments.

Amen to that. Like I said, it is two equally bad choices.

There really aren't that many countries that adhere as religiously to their founding documents as the US. If the relation between state and local government had not changed over the course of 3 centuries that would be unusual in the extreme.

Federalism is all well and good as a democratic country that is so large and diverse as the US, but who other than the federal goverment was going to tackle Al Capone, the institutionalised racism that came to the forefront during the civil rights era, the great depression, etc.

Funny you should quote Reagan, who engineerd the largest increase in federal spending in US history during the cold war. Where was local accountability then ?.

<sigh> You guys had to go and provoke him, didn't you?

I'd make some comment about how there was no singular view of "the founders" and how they included broad, ambiguous language like "general welfare" in the powers of Congress to give the new government the flexibility to deal with unforeseen circumstances, but that really doesn't have much to do with Republicans cruising for blowjobs in public restrooms.

Is this really such an uninteresting topic that it needed to be hijacked by yet another game of "taunt the wacky libertarian"? :)

Hey guys, Federalism obviously means NO FEDERAL GOVERNMENT!

Even the founding fathers understood the utility of a Federal government. It's like you think everyone against the federal government holding too much power over individuals are like those militants who tried arguing that Texas was still a Republic.

On-topic update: Senate Republican leaders have stripped Craig of his authority as the ranking minority member of one full committee and two subcommittees, and several prominent Republicans have publicly called on him to resign.

Man, those Republicans need to get there heads out of their collected asses and just accept that one of their number is gay. Also the senator needs to come to terms with his sexuality and stop being in denial.

He's propositioning men in a public stall. I'd say there's more to it than he's gay. He's gay, cheating on his wife, a hypocrite, and being particularly indecent.

Assuming it's true.

Well first off he needs to accept that he is gay. Next he needs to get out of the marriage. All it will do is cause further frustration for himself and his wife. Once that is done he should find a more suitable and respectable methods to find a mate than a public restroom

No, I believe I said that Federealism was good in a country that is so large and diverse, otherwise the people would be too far removed from the seat of power.

If I may I'd like to compare this to a recent case in the UK where a senior copper bunked off work, to meet an anonymous lady in an office in Gatwick airport for what the French might call 'rumpy pumpy'*. He was told he had let the force down, but no charge of gross misconduct was upheld.

*The French would never call it rumpy pumpy. They have too much class.

Had this copper drafted legislation to discharge all coppers who did the same?

It's not a perfect analogy, but your copper ain't such a hypocrite tosser as Sen. Craig.
