Laozi Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 Now Commando - there's a decent date movie. Right, if she doesn't get excited by Commando then she needs to be kicked to the curb. The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzi Across the Eighth Dimension People laugh when I say that I think a jellyfish is one of the most beautiful things in the world. What they don't understand is, I mean a jellyfish with long, blond hair.
metadigital Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 The Break-up: surprisingly well written (acted, directed) and accomplished little (reverse-) romcom. I think, of all the Friends, Jennifer Aniston has crafted the best acting career; I can't fault any of her choices. OBSCVRVM PER OBSCVRIVS ET IGNOTVM PER IGNOTIVS OPVS ARTIFICEM PROBAT
Enoch Posted July 20, 2007 Posted July 20, 2007 (edited) Saw HP5 last night. My overall impression was positive, but mixed. The good: The visuals of the Ministry of Magic and Sirius' house were impressive. Imelda Staunton was an excellent Dolores Umbridge, and the design for her office was perfect. The girl playing Luna Lovegood was also great-- she stole every scene she was in. The rest of the cast was also very good (as always). If anything, I was upset that some of them didn't get enough screen time (In particular, Emma Thompson's turn as Trelawney was far too brief). The bad: The use of the Daily Prophet as a segue and exposition felt gimmicky. The Weasley twins' escape was kind of underwhelming-- it could have been handled much better. The final fight between Dumbledore and Voldemort was impressive, but it was too conventional. The account in the book included bits of Dumbledore's characteristic whimsy (statues coming alive, etc.), which was absent in the film-- it was just 2 very serious wizards blasting away at each other . It was cut down dramatically from the book, which I'm generally OK with, but it totally screws whoever is writing & directing films 6 & 7, because much of the material that was cut is necessary exposition for stuff that happens later in the series. (Mostly, they never explained why Voldy wanted the prophecy in the first place, and I have a feeling that Snape's memory of Lily Potter will have an important role in book 7.) The one cut that I felt really hurt this film was Firenze, the centaur divination professor -- Umbridge's hate of "half breeds" and "near-humans" wasn't set up at all until the scene at the very end when she runs into Grawp and the pack of centaurs . It made that whole scene feel rather forced-- an unsatisfactory end for an otherwise excellent villain. Edited July 20, 2007 by Enoch

Omelette Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 I recently saw: HP 5 - Amazing film, crappy adaptation. That's all I'm gonna say for the sake of spoilers. Hairspray - I loved it. Thought it was quirky, cute, and a pretty good interpretation of the Broadway show, though Travolta seemed out of place and his accent was confusing. Didn't know what he wanted to sound like. They should have just asked Goodman to come back and reprise his role. But apart from that, it was delightful! Go see it!
Rosbjerg Posted July 21, 2007 Posted July 21, 2007 I saw Idiocracy yesterday. A good idea and a decent plot (too many holes though), but the actors are horrible (except for the female lead) so the story simply falls short - there's nothing to carry it - so it becomes unbelievable and stereotypish. Fortune favors the bald.

theslug Posted July 22, 2007 Posted July 22, 2007 District B 13. So far every French movie I've seen has sucked. This was no different. While the parkour in this movie was pretty excellent and the fighting was pretty above average, the plot and acting was disgustingly horrid. It also didn't help that they dubbed the movie with voice actors that sucked more than your average anime. I would of been content watching it subbed but either way the concept was so stupid. Don't watch this movie unless you have a particular hardon for parkour. 6/10 There was a time when I questioned the ability for the schizoid to ever experience genuine happiness, at the very least for a prolonged segment of time. I am no closer to finding the answer, however, it has become apparent that contentment is certainly a realizable goal. I find these results to be adequate, if not pleasing. Unfortunately, connection is another subject entirely. When one has sufficiently examined the mind and their emotional constructs, connection can be easily imitated. More data must be gleaned and further collated before a sufficient judgment can be reached.

Heck, that's why I rented it, I wasn't expecting some great plot. I've yet to see a scene that topped the intro action scene in that movie, although the intro for Casino Royale is close. edit: Have you seen Brotherhood of the Wolf? That's the only other french movie I can think of that I really enjoyed. Well I didn't know what the movie was until I watched it. Like I said the parkour was absolutely amazing, and the fighting was pretty much top notch which is why it got a 6 and not anything lower. But the acting and story is why it didn't get anything higher than a 6. My expectations were heightened by the begining, the rat coming out of the wall, stylish opening, and then the crazy parkour in the begining. But after that it was just too shallow, even for an action movie. There was a time when I questioned the ability for the schizoid to ever experience genuine happiness, at the very least for a prolonged segment of time.
