Diogo Ribeiro Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 (edited) These aren't particularly new and as such the novelty may have worn off a bit, but still, I found a handful of Cthulhu-based images on my backups and for what it may be worth, I'm posting them here. I've found these images and kept them for reference, but it's been a long time since I've stored them and as such I can't remember the sources. Feel free to post some of yours, if you have any. LadyCrimson Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Well, most of those are new to me, so I find them entertaining. Poor kitty. The seagull one makes me think I'll skip breakfast. “Things are as they are. metadigital Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 I have experienced the drowned kitten one, personally. :D OBSCVRVM PER OBSCVRIVS ET IGNOTVM PER IGNOTIVS OPVS ARTIFICEM PROBAT

Musopticon? Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 ^Awesome. Yes. kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears. I had to fight against blood thirsty wolves and rabid penguins to get my food. Those who were too weak to survive were sent to Sweden. It has made me the man I am today. A man who craves furry hentai. So let us go and embrace the rustling smells of unseen worlds
Walsingham Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 I'm not sure cthulhu - while I'm inordinately fond of it - is really likely to catch the imagination of the present market. "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. RIP Hades/Sand/etc. Here's hoping your next alt has a harp.
Blarghagh Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Are you kidding? Cthulhu is already an internet culture phenomenom. All it needs is a slight nudge.
Aram Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 I just got some new adventure game that's Sherlock Holmes vs. Cthulhu mythos. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Tale Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 I just got some new adventure game that's Sherlock Holmes vs. Cthulhu mythos. I'll let you know how it turns out. Please do! I think Tycho recommends it, but looking for a second opinion. "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."
Aram Posted April 19, 2007 Posted April 19, 2007 Well, I wrapped that one up pretty quickly. The Sherlock Holmes aspect of the story was handled pretty well. At several times, you really do investigate and gather clues like Sherlock would, and the interaction between him and Watson worked well. Sherlock came off as a kind of a ****, though. The Cthulhu aspect of the game was not quite so good. There isn't actually anything supernatural in the game. There's a lot of creepy moments, a decent amount of gore at times, and a stealth mission in an insane asylumn, but in the way of actual mythos content, we only get references and people talking about it. Sherlock finds several Cthulhu statues, elder signs, some insane cultists, and goes temporarily insane after reading the Necronomicon, but that's it. You don't get to see Cthulhu or even so much as a shoggoth. The puzzles were decent, and the graphics weren't bad. You walk around a rather bland environment in 1st person shooter mode only there's no shooting, clicking on hotspots with a hand that appears if you're looking at one. Watson has a really awkward way of following you around (you'll understand if you play it). There's also a lot of tedium caused by the fact that you often can't do things or pick things up unless you've done something else first--a lot of items, for example, you can find and know that you'll eventually need, but you can't get them until you actually need them, so you basically backtrack constantly back to places you've already been to get things you could have easily gotten before. That was my biggest annoyance. As an adventure game, to be honest, it was pretty mediocre compared to the real classics, but if you're jonesing for an adventure game, you'll probably like it. You clearly like the new Sam & Max games, so yeah I'd recommend it.
Pop Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 How often should Cthulu mythos creatures actually show up in a game, anyway? I was under the impression that all the big creatures (Dagon, Cthulu, etc.) were asleep only to wake up whenever the world was to end. Seemed like in all the books I read (there weren't many, admittedly) it was the minions of the Great Old Ones that did all the killing and the insanifying. A Shoggoth, maybe, but not Cthulu or Yog-Sothoth, or the big guns. Still, it's weird that there's no actual supernatural **** in the game. Join me, and we shall make Production Beards a reality!
Tale Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 It makes sense. If a Shoggoth shows up, what the hell is Sherlock Holmes going to do? Deduce it to death? "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."
Pop Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 It makes sense. If a Shoggoth shows up, what the hell is Sherlock Holmes going to do? Deduce it to death? Few people know that Sherlock Holmes is the great great grandfather of Macgyver. Join me, and we shall make Production Beards a reality!
Hell Kitty Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Watson has a really awkward way of following you around (you'll understand if you play it). If by awkward you mean creepy then yes. He doesn't actually move, he just materializes behind you. Walk away from him backwards so he's off in the distance then turn around and... HOLY CRAP!
Blank Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Feng, I'm still up for that game if life ever gets easy for you.
SteveThaiBinh Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 As an adventure game, to be honest, it was pretty mediocre compared to the real classics It scored 9.3 at Gamespot. (Actually it scored 8.3, but if you factor in the obligatory -1 for being an adventure game...) AdventureGamers were much less impressed, though apparently it is very creepy. I'm not rushing to buy it. But then, I still have some Sam & Max to last me. "An electric puddle is not what I need right now." (Nina Kalenkov)

A Shoggoth, maybe, but not Cthulu or Yog-Sothoth, or the big guns. The whole plot of the game is that someone is trying to summon Cthulhu, and it's up to Sherlock to stop him. Surprise, he does, and I couldn't figure out any way to fail so I'd get to see him. But it's not that there's no Elder Gods in the game, or even no minions. There's just no real proof that anything supernatural is really taking place. Watson has some strange dreams and Sherlock reacts strangely to reading the Necronomicon, but that's pretty much it. It's implied that there's a hunter in the game that killed what may have been a Deep One, but you only see a painting of it, not the beast itself or even the remains of one. The most dangerous thing you face is a crazed negro (lol the game says it not me), or a cultist with a gun. Tell me one Lovecraft story set in the mythos, where some kind of supernatural mythos creature wasn't even involved. By the end of the game, the two Limeys are left not even knowing if it was all a farce. "Gee, do you think any of it was real, Holmes?" "Who knows, Watson. Now go get in the hot tub."

But then, I still have some Sam & Max to last me. Now that's a duo I'd like to see take on the Cthulhu mythos. I actually think Max makes a joke about summoning a shoggoth in one of the episodes. Guess I'll just have to make due with the Ghostbusters vs. Cthulhu. (Trust me it's not that bad) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXX_HrgX0LQ Edited April 20, 2007 by Aram
