Super Bowl XL

I was for the Steelers, but there were a couple of bad calls.

First of all, pass interference? Give me a break. Can players even touch each other these days? Another for holding? Naw, that just wasn't right. Most calls seem right on.

However, the controversial call for Roethlisberger's touchdown was correct. The replay was indecisive -- it looked like the ball might have passed the plane while he was in the air -- and so the people on the ground get the nod as.they.should.

I didn't care much for this Superbowl. The half time music sucked, bad calls against Seattle and the commercials were stupid.

Seattle got completely screwed in that game. I mean c'mon. There was no offensive interference on the touchdown to Jackson in the first. Rothelisberger didn't score on that touchdown in the second. And the phantom holding call on the pass to Stevens in the third that would have put them at the two yard line. I was actually surprised that the refs got the instant replay of the Hasselback fumble right. I'm a Bills fan and I was amped at the number of bad calls. I don't know if Seattle would have won but the refs definately took away all their momentum on two drives.

The officiating wasn't awful but it wasn't great either. On the offensive PI, I understand the call. It was right in the ref's face--even if there was no meaningful 'push,' when a ref sees an arm out like that when a receiver gets separation, they'll throw the flag. I also agree that the Roethlisburger TD was good (by the slimmest of margins).

But there were misses. There was the Stevens "drop" in the 1st half that was clearly a catch-and-fumble on the replay. On the phantom holding call, I could've sworn that the DE being "held" was offsides.

Although lets not forget that Seattle seemingly did everything in their power to lose this game. They had some truly awful special teams play (how many bad touchbacks did they give up on punts? Penalties on returns?) and that horrid clock management at the end of the 2nd quarter. And all of Pittsburgh's big plays came at the expense of the inexperienced backup they had at FS.

Personally, I found the game entirely boring. I was more interested in watching the Yes, Dear marathon on TBS than I was watching the Super Bowl. Pretty sad.

The first half was pretty good, I suppose. The second half just bored me too tears. At some point during the third quarter I just gave up, turned off my T.V., popped in my document CD and began typing.

I had a productive sunday.

I agree with Enoch about the time management issue. Yeah, the Seahawks got a couple of tough breaks on the calls, but Hasselbeck made some very poor decisions at the end of the half and at the end of the game.

I say Hasselbeck, and not the O Coordinator because he pretty much took the game out of the coach's hands by calling audibles on the line. That's fine, that's what a QB has to do, but you can't throw it over the middle with no timeouts on third down, if you're short of the first down.

Oh, I wasn't looking at the screen for that call. I remember them calling it but I don't remember seeing a replay. I agree with Drabek, about the audibles.

*I'm a big fake, my wife hates football so this is the first Superbowl I've seen in like... ten years, I guess. Maybe more. Still, I thought it was interesting and I'm a guy. I have to talk football every ten years or I lose my "guy" status and become a "weenie."

I believe the new NFL standing is that you must talk about football every 5 years to debunk 'weenie status'. Since you are in a gray area, NFL reccomends that you run 10 Hail Mary's, and do an over the shoulder spike in the end zone, follwed by a funky chicken dance.

IMHO, this ritual could either absolve or add to the dreaded 'weenie status'.

That's your reason? No, methinks it has something more to do with this:

Steelers: 21

Seahawks: 10

The bad calls went against both sides, like Hasselback's fumble that wasn't ruled a fumble. And Ben did make the touchdown. The TD counts if the ball goes over the white line, and if you look closely, it just did. But I do agree it was pretty tough to tell. I dunno. Seattle had some bad calls, but I doubt they still would have won. I also think the Steelers were trying equally hard to let Seattle win. Let's not forget how horrible the Steelers' offense was playing in the first half. They went an entire first quarter without a first down, and had the ball for only about 6 minutes to Seattle's 14 near the end of the first half. Also, it can be argued that the score should have been more like 28-10. If Roethlisberger hadn't thrown that horrible interception, they most likely would have gotten that touchdown.

"The bad calls went against both sides, like Hasselback's fumble that wasn't ruled a fumble."

That was clearly not a fumble. Remember, the refs intiially claled it a fumble; but the reply clearly shows there was contact made then he fell to the ground which led to the play being over. You cna't fumble after a play is over. Know the rules.

I agree though that Roth's TD was a TD.

As for the score, and what it *could* have been... wanna live in 'couldas'? Ok then. Let's play that way. Seattle coulda scored another 5-6 TDs if it wasn't for horrible calls, bad penalties (some cause of Seattle screwing up and some because of bad calls)... and, they'd hve done it in the first half.

Okay, I forgot that he made contact. But as for your other point, it wasn't "bad calls" as much as it was they just couldn't stop fouling. Sure there were a couple bad calls, but most were spot-on. The Seahaks deserved almost every penalty they got, even on just holding alone. Also, so many people here are quick to point out that the Seahawks were trying to "make us win". Aren't we all forgetting just how horribly the Steelers' offense was playing in the first half? They didn't even get a first down until later in the second quarter.

Um.. That had as much to do with the Seattle D as it did with the Pittsburgh O.

I doubt that. The Seahawks' defense really isn't that great. They're biggest strength was their offense, which really shined in the first half, but just couldn't really hold it together, and sort of fell apart in the second half. But I do hand it to them for holding back our defense the way they did. Those guys just seemed to be all over Polamalu throughout most of the game. Meanwhile, the Steelers offense just wasn't playing their best. (their defense wasn't doing so well for a time, but that's another story) All their previous 8 games were built on a super-strong offensive in the first half, and I just didn't see that coming out of them at all until later.

As a completely neutral Giants fan, the thing that makes me mad is that the game was boring. (Eldar, you picked a bad year to tune in.) I doubt there's anyone in the country who really enjoyed watching it and wasn't either wearing black & gold or quite entoxicated (or both). The game wasn't a struggle between two great teams at their best. It also wasn't a clear demonstration of superiority by one team over the other. The Steelers didn't really win the game-- they just didn't lose it as badly as the Seahawks. Unsatisfying to watch.

It's also frustrating because, if a few of the disputed calls had gone the other way (most notable the non-existant hold that erased one of the few balls that Jeremy Stevens managed to catch), it could have had a memorable, competitive ending.

I was listening to sports radio this morning (espn) and they were saying this super bowl, and the whole playoffs in general were the worst officiated ever.

The game was so boring because every time Seattle made a great play, to place them in scoring position, a referee came up with a phantom call. I would have to agree and say the refs made this one of the most boring Super Bowls ever. It should have been an exciting game, but the officiating deflated the game.

Oh who cares, I don

Thanks for the tip, Ghengis. I'll do that the next time I watch a football game at your house. Hopefully the Cowboys vs. the Seahawks. :Eldar's trouble-making grin icon:

The seahawks beat themselvs. and there should have been an unessicary roughness call in the 3rd or 4th when the ref had to jump ona seattle player because he dove in like a minute after the play was wistled dead. so don't give me any of this seatlle got ripped off crap.

Texans in 07

yeah they resigned my boy david carr and they will have bush in their possession soon, now all they need is 5 good fat guys (w00t)

Taking Bush would be a mistake. Dominick Davis + a decent O-line > Reggie Bush + the O-line the Texans currently have. They should try to trade back a couple of spots and take D'Brickashaw Ferguson. 'Cause who doesn't want a guy named "D'Brickashaw" on their team?
