On the one hand, Nintendo's take on RPG/Action RPG gameplay is exactly opposite to my RPG tastes in every conceivable way. On the other, it could be a truly great game on its own terms, even if they're precisely opposite to mine.

Usually, I'll only buy a console game (or a console with which to play it) if it's a game which genuinely demonstrates brilliant storytelling and good writing, and can only be played on a console. And that's a rare case indeed. Jade Empire was one. RPGs are very much about good dialogue writing and character development for me at present, and until recently, there was virtually nothing that could be considered objectively good writing (which scans as being intelligent and convincing prose when taken out of video game context) on consoles. There was always a sense that with JRPGs, writing and translation shouldn't really matter much as long as game text achieves a certain level of tolerable mediocrity. If it was coherent, and you could tell what was happening, video game writing wasn't expected to live up to the standards that any other medium's writing was expected to live up to. For the most part, it was just letting you know what was going on.

But I'm hoping that will change. As production values increase, there's simply no excuse for economising on writing or translation, within a multimillion dollar production. It doesn't make sense. Bioware showed with Jade Empire (even if the characters were stereotyped caricatures) that dynamic and complex dialogue can fit into an Action RPG format. I hope that Twilight Princess will have that.

Zelda is not an RPG.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

I agree with Arkan, it's not an RPG in any traditional sense. It's more of an action/adventure title. Windwalker was a bit too kiddie style for me, and I actually bought the GC just for that. Still, even though I traded the GC in a long time ago, I might buy a Revolution and this looks like a top title.

I also read reviews and saw interviews with developers. I was getting really pumped remembering the old days of hyrule in the N64 world but a whole two console generations later ;) . Then I did a little bit of research on the revolution itself and was unpleasntly surpised when I came across it's controller. It's basically a remote control for a T.V. Maybe I'm a sucker for the good old game pads but the control is not that appealing to me.....

Now I'm really debating with myself to get a revolution or not... but as a side note there are sensors on the controller which can sense the actual movement of the controller. Wouldn't it be cool to wave it like a lightsabre.

I have a friend who cried when he found out that they had delayed this Zelda from christmas 2005 until spring 2006... Real ELEPHANT tears.

I have a feeling they won't release it this spring either, more like during the summer.

Crocodile tears? Are you using that phrase right?

Probably not. In Sweden it just means you cry really big tears because it hurt a LOT.

Actually it doesn't! I just looked it up and it said in the dictionary: "False tears of irony" or something similar. How embarrassing.

As with most games like this I've deliberately been ignoring it to stop myself falling into an agonising wait. I'll wait till the games about to come out then get excited about it.

I just hope it's harder than Windwaker because that game was far far far too easy, even for a Zelda game.

What besides "oh look, it's adult link!" have they shown to be promising?

Of course, I will be buying it immediately (meh. I'm weak :)" ), it just doesn't seem like they've added much unique gameplay to it. They've taken the idea of transformation from Majora's Mask, taken the public outcry for adult link and thrown that in (but will it still be childlike? Or will it be the dark doom and gloom game that we loved in Ocarina of Time?), but it just seems like they're using their same old tricks.

But of course, we could be surprised. Hopefully we will be :p
