Krookie
Last year, my school held an assembly about Myspace, Friendster, and sites like that in general. It was basically warning the younger kids at the school about the dangers of posting your picture, intrests and location on the internet. Over the years Myspace has become increasingly popular, and most kids have one (not me though). The problem is, most of them are under age. Myspace makes it clear that you must be atleast 16 (or something) to join, but all you really have to do is set your year of birth back a bit, and you're in. What's really more important though is a death threat e-mail a student in a neighboring school recieved. Here's the article. This is a message from the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jan Furman. Last evening and today you received information from Northern Valley Regional High School officials that a student at Northern Valley Old Tappan High School had received a threatening e-mail that necessitated the closing of the school. As of 3:00 p.m. today, the Bergen Country Prosecutor and the FBI have confirmed that the sender of the e-mail resides in a foreign country, has been identified and has admitted his wrongdoing. An extensive search of the Northern Valley Old Tappan High School was conducted as part of the investigation. Musopticon?
In order to diminish "death threats", and other siht kids get spewed with nowadays, internet needs to be killed. kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears. Kaftan Barlast
I rember at my school, a friend of mine sent out a HC newsletter that had a logo that said "all capitalists must burn" and this dumb friggin kid got one and reported it as a death threat. There was much fuss about it. The solution: DISCLAIMER: Do not take what I write seriously unless it is clearly and in no uncertain terms, declared by me to be meant in a serious and non-humoristic manner. If there is no clear indication, asume the post is written in jest. This notification is meant very seriously and its purpouse is to avoid misunderstandings and the consequences thereof. Furthermore; I can not be held accountable for anything I write on these forums since the idea of taking serious responsability for my unserious actions, is an oxymoron in itself. Important: as the following sentence contains many naughty words I warn you not to read it under any circumstances; botty, knickers, wee, erogenous zone, psychiatrist, clitoris, stockings, bosom, poetry reading, dentist, fellatio and the department of agriculture. Calax
eh I'd never even heard of myspace until this summer. I haven't even looked at it. But it sounds like somthing Jack Thompson would go after as a tool for pedophiles to use to pick their targets. As to posting your pic online to for everyone to see? Eh people do it anyway. I mean if you type in sombodies name you will probably get at least one pic of them so you know what they look like. The thing that does bother me about myspace is that it also gives out your address and everything else to everyone. Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition! Kevin Butler will awesome your face off. ShadowPaladin V1.0
You would have to be a bit of a tool to give your real address out. It does sound like the sort of thing that should be under parental consent for anyone below the age of 16. I have to agree with Volourn. Bioware is pretty much dead now. Lyric Suite
That's Chris Avellone, for those who couldn't tell. Very interesting about his reading meterial, i think i might pick up some Martin, Prachett or Zelansky one of this days. Haven't read anything fiction for untold eons. I made a Myspace page a long time ago when my friends were actually interested in it. It's been ages since i've bothered. This is my page BTW: http://www.myspace.com/401981 Never managed to hook up with anybody, being a classical music nerd is worst then being a computer geek this days... Krookie
I'm with you Wolf on the restrictions. This one kid in my school happens to be taking the whole 'Anti-Myspace' thing pretty personally. He thinks that the school should leave his private life alone, and get the hell of his myspace. (and he's right)
Calax
The school itself shouldn't be getting involved, but the parents should. Because the parents are the legal guardian of the boy if they say "close your myspace account" he has to close it. They basically have total control over who gets to tell him what and make him do whatever. I hate parents. oh and simply writing the best way to start a school massacre is a one way trip to either county mental or jail. Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition! If his parents say "close your myspace account", all he has to do is only log in when his parents aren't in the room, and remember to delete the history file. Krookie
See, the schools are calling everyone's parents and telling them about Myspace. Personally, I've always hated the website, but still. Schools shouldn't get involved with it's students, unless it has to do with something concerning the school itself.
