Already played System Shock 2(One of the best games ever, right up there with Deus Ex), but thanks for linking the original System Shock, i've been looking for that one for ages

I heard Wasteland is a freebie. Anyone know if it's true and where to get it?

You can download Wasteland at Underdogs as well, they have a host of old RPGs. Check the System Shock 2 link.

Also Enemy Territory is an excellent team based FPS that plays like a tug of war with teams trying to achieve objectives while the other team stops them. It's only a couple of years old, so it's not as antiquated as most other free games..

Cool I'll go check it out.

Dunno the status on TA (Total Annihilation), but it might be abandonware by now. If so, I definitely recommend it.

Get the mod that raises the max unit limit to 5000 and then go play Seven Islands for terribly silly, unbridled fun.

Just making sure now, do the movies play in-game if I have divx installed then?  Is that right?

Also, shoudl I be playing System Shock 1 first?

I played the intro, then I started downloading the original System Shock, so if the intro counts as a movie (and it seems to be) then Yes.

Just wondering what free games people have found on the internet that they would recommend to play.

A game like no other.

That's so overrated. The story is dull and graphics get worse the further you progress. The ending is supposedly unfinished too. At least, nobody has said anything good about it. Or anything at all, in fact...

And it's hardly free, isn't it?

But on the plus side, I hear it's got the highest proportion of female players of any game, with roughly ~50%.

Yeah, I hear it suffers from horrible gameplay balance, and the worst part is that the devs don't give a flying fvck.

And in Reallife I couldn't find any save points. Presumably this is why my character started moving slower and slower ...data accumulation.

Regarding system Shock 2, it looks about on a par with Deus Ex, for graphics and so on. But i keep getting glitches, particularly at points involving sound. So far i've only managed to start training, and nothing else. Any suggestions?

EDIT: and by glitch I mean by beautiful XP shuts down completely. This never happens normally, no matter how many pints of custard I pour in.

System Shock 2 locking up? Do you have a P4 with Hyper-Threading? If so, you need to go into Task Manager after SS is loaded and right-click on SShock2.exe and in Set CPU Affinity deselect one.

WHAT A HORRIBLE NIGHT TO HAVE A CURSE.

Some mods really should try out if you are playing System Shock 2:

Rebirth

Completely new models for System Shock which look far less blocky and more detailed than the original ones. There exists also a complemented version which includes the new rumbler and monkeys. They were fully modelled and animated but for some reason the developer of Rebirth never included them in the final version, probably because he was hired by the company which made Arx Fatalis and ran out of time to update the package. The complemented version also features a new skin for the cyborg midwife because many fans didn't like the original one which came with Rebirth.

Rebirth - Complemented version

You can check some screenshots for comparison on the original rebirth site. The download link for the complemented version is at the end of the post.

Another mod which improves the visual quality of SS2 is a texture pack which replaces the old ones with high resolution textures. The overall effect is even more noticeable than Rebirth because it affects all maps.

Shock Texture Upgrade Project

The last mod I always use is Anosotropic's balance mod. The original System Shock had some munchkin devices that made certain skills obsolete. Not only it removes tham but also buffs those skills so they become actually useful throughout the game and makes it less frustrating to build your character as you won't realize late in the game that some investments were crap. Additionaly it balances some weapons and some other things. Imo it makes the game far more enjoyable and I would even recommend it to people who are playng SS2 the first time.

My download link doesn't work anymore and I can't find it right now. If anyone wants it I can send it to you via email, the file is very small or if someone has some free webspace he could upload it.

Anisotropic's balance mod readme:

SYSTEM SHOCK II:

  Anisotropic:

    Thread:

    http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/ultimatebb....ic&f=9&t=003881

    Goals: Balance!

    ITEMS:

    - Autorepair Unit concept eliminated.  Autorepair Unit object

      has removed.

    - French-Epstein Device concept eliminated.  FED object removed.

    - Some alien organs require higher research skill

    - Hitpoint bonuses for Endurance have been increased on easier

      difficulties.

    - Smasher overhand strikes multiply damage by 2 instead of 1.5

    - PSI boosters boost the base PSI skill level by 2 points

    WEAPONS:

    - Wrench does not benefit from Standard skill (nor indeed from

any weapon skill, though it is still affected by Strength or

      OS upgrades)

    - Certain high-level enemies have been modified to resist the

specialized damage caused by the Assault Rifle and Pistol.

    - rate of fire has been increased and Recoil has been lessened

for the Assault Rifle's automatic setting

    - The Shotgun has been strengthened and its blast radius

      reduced.

    - Laser Pistol decays more slowly and causes more damage.

    - Laser Rapier requires only an Energy skill of 3 and does

      more damage against robotic targets

    - EMP Rifle causes more damage to mechanical targets and has

      a small electrical suppressive effect

    - Grenade Launcher requires a strength of 4

    - Grenade Launcher's rate of fire and projectile speed have

      decreased

    - Disruption and Proximity grenades have been improved

    - Blast radius of grenades has increased

    - Fusion Cannon requires a strength of 6

    - Fusion Cannon uses 2 prisms for normal and 3 for deadly

shots.  Deadly ones cause twice the damage of normal ones.

    - Fusion Cannon has been converted into the game's most

      deadly weapon.

    - Shard has been converted to an anti-organic (but not

anti-mechanical) weapon, so that it complements but does

      not replace the Laser Rapier

    - Viral Proliferator has been converted into an effective

*indirect* weapon against organic targets (around corners,

      against groups)

    - Viral Proliferator's has been given a large blast radius,

giving it the potential to backfire on the player in some

      situations

    - Annelid Launcher has been made quite powerful against all

organic targets, firing single clusters or double clusters

    PSI DISCIPLINES:

    - Projected disciplines yield an effect instantly

    - Cryo and Pyro produce splash damage

    - Localized Pyro does more damage more quickly, but does not

      last as long

    - Molecular Duplication duplicates nearly *anything* (except

      PSI hypos)

    - Molecular Transmutation changes nearly *anything* (except

      quest items)

    - Soma Transference no longer damages the brain unless the

      stars have been destroyed.

What's that you say? A P4 hyper-threading off the port bow? AAAGH! Raise shields! Lock S foils in attack position! Cancel my twelve o'clock! Tell Laura I love her! We're all GONNA DIEEEEE!

Antagonist: do you know if those mods will work with the free downloaded version? And thanks for posting them with a review.

EDIT: Your advice worked like a charm. And I dont mean some sickly elm bark and feathers charm. We're talking hanged man's eyeballs, and killer bee venom. Nice.

I'm trying KalOnline right now. I doubt many here would like it - not RPG-enough :shifty: - but it's not a bad freebie on-line action-rpg. Decent graphics, smooth running, plenty of people playing. Simple gameplay mechanics, large world. I haven't gotten far in questing or exploring so can't say if gameplay will get better/worse or more fun/really boring yet.

Right now I'm standing in a river with about 2000 other players 'fishing' - fish are like heal potions and mixing ingrediants and...well...for some reason it's really fun to have the game running and be doing something for the game, and yet not actually playing. I get the feeling some people have left their game running while away on vacation, or something. lol

Yes. Just - whatever you do - don't look into their eyes...

BTW, System Shock 2 really is good.
