What gameworld do you like the best?

I so want to play that game, but my wallett remains thin and sun beckons. Curse you summer!

I'd hate to say Planescape or (my first instinct) Dark Sun, since while both being game worlds I also know about them from P&P resource books and such, which probably colors my judgement.

I'll go with Star Control 2 - it actually had a galactic tone different from the two modern faces of sci-fi (Trek and Wars). An unfailingly martial universe, packed to the gills with distinct races, in which humans have a minor role. We weren't even the "hero" race (that goes to the Chmmr), just the protagonist race.

Stating the obvious here; but this thread seems to be forming in to something interesting. And hopefully unflammable.

Sorry to bust your bubble Musopticon.

And, sure you can choose to ignore it; but that is illogical. Afterall, I could ignore all the bad parts of say GH and make it sound perfect. Or FR. Or Whatever. Bottom line is that PS is not a world. Period. This is an undisputable fact.

Point out where I said it was a world? I said it was a setting. Oerwinde get

"Jupp, I know it's a part of the FR, but still. Isn't FR more like a universe, and Planescape just a part of it, with its own realm?"

Other way around. FR is part of  PS. Just like Greyhawk, and other D&D worlds. PS is basically D&D's multiverse equivilant to our real world space.

Isn't Spelljammer the D&D Multiverse's equivalent to our real world space? ;)"

LOL You gots me there. Spelljammer is apart of PS. That's right. PS is bigger than Spelljammer as it encompasses all D&D worlds, and the 'spelljammer' setting.

P.S. Ellester, PS is not a game world. It's a setting. And, just ebcause your friends try to ignore PS's connection with the rest of the D&D settings doesn't make it so. Afterall, I cna make a PS campaign where instead of LoP is a pink bunny and allows gods to run amok in Sigil; but it doesn't make it true...

I haven't read this thread yet, so I may be misunderstanding the question. My favorite game world is the Gothic world. Gorgeous, seamless, lush and utterly immersive. Truly wonderful.

Having never read the Main setting book for the FR, does it actually deal with the areas of Aber-Toril outside of Faerun? If it just deals with Faerun, it'd make it more of a continent than a world, I think.

For that matter, if we're being pedantic, couldn't you say that the FR is a setting, while Aber-Toril is the gameworld? :p:thumbsup:

You got the jest of the thread I think. I agree. the Gothic world ws pretty cool. I didn't care for the games; but the world itself from what I saw was pretty well made.

Focuses mostly on Faeurn but covers, in small details.

Good point. That's bad of us. You are 100% right. Forgotten Realms isn't a world; it's a campaign setting. Abeir Toril is a world. :p

Fallout -Its rough, raw and doesnt skimp in on the mature elements. The major part of the game also takes place in cities/villages and there arent any bloody dungeons :D (well, there are but they dont feel like dungeons).

The world of fallout is one of the few worlds I feel like I could just walk around there forever.

Vampire: the Masquerade 3rd ed. The WoD is geavily overcrowded, but If you cut away everything but the core clans and remove the werewolves, mages etc. then its wonderful. The sensation is similar to Fallouts, youre one person in a big ugly world but there is ten thousand different ways to go and morals are always relative.

That taffer Musopticon? mentioned The City from the Thief series. I second that. Of all the games I've played (okay, not that many, but still), the setting in the Thief series had the best game world, probably because of the "immersion-factor" of them all, but also because there was a lot of background, like Musopticon? said. The contrasts within the setting were also a contributing role to what made it so great. You had everything from great immaculate mansions to complete slums and abandoned buildings (haunted former orphanage gone mental asylum anyone? That place was freaky), but no matter where you went, there was always a certain feeling of decadence to it.

For the record, my favourite gameworld would probably be Planet/Chiron from Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. It may not have had the sheer depth of a CRPG world, or a pen and paper setting, but the characters and the factions were surprisingly enjoyable for stereotypes, and all the quotes, movies and technologies, as well as the story itself were nicely done, and make it my favourite gameworld, and one of my favourite games.

Aahh, but of course Kaftan Barlast, how could I've forgotten WoD!?

From the first time I came in contact with that world, I was HOOKED! :p That world has really got a feeling of that great things could happen, allthough it is a very dark place. And there's just so many secrets to be uncovered that I'd take several lifetimes just to find a few "

Really, the amount of backround fluff offered for WoD is just insane. Take the Camarilla for instance; every clan sees it in a bit different light, all clans have different factions and all plot against each other, but on the surface it's all "fun and games". The situation is so juicy as everyone is busy backstabbing when the end of the world is nearer than ever. It's not about who's the strongest, it's about who survives when the whole world is colored red sanguine and drained dry.

Yay! You described it much better than I.

Just wanted to add that the worlds in GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas were pretty impressive too, although they are way too violent for me to have as favourites. But I enjoy them immensely when playing those games!

Beautifully told

I must say though, I prefer the bit of the older WoD. And before the great chaos begins. You know, when "scary" guys and such begins waking up  and whole clans starts frenzying and all..

It's typical, but some of the clans that I really really like, becomes extinct very early.

Rokugan - L5R, Shadowrun, Post-Apoc Earth in Fallout, Arcanum

All really good canidates for futher games.

I'm sure they are, but you should also tell us WHY you think so, and tell us a bit of the world. Not just make a list please..

Same goes to you Weiser_Cain, tell us a bit at least about your own world

Fair enough.

Maybe it's just my soft spot for Ultima, but it was a complete world in my eyes. Perhaps because I visited it in so many Ultima titles, but more so because with games like Ultima 7, the NPCs all had real schedules and life. And I spent so much time exploring it that I came to apprecaite it.

With 9 main games, and a few spinoffs like Ultima Underworld, the world has a rich history. The Forgotten Realms have a rich history too, but the history of a world like Britannia/Sosaria is intertwined with the player's character. I feel like I helped shape that world.

With Rokugan, the best elements of historical Japan have been mixed with fantasy Japan. And then the name was changed to Rokugan so that you can play with the world and not feel constrained by historical accuracy. The setting is diverse from our own culture, and very rich. The political landscape is very nice as well.

Shadowrun provides a little something for everyone with shamanism, oppresive corps, street samurai, magic, elves, dwarves, riggers, deckers, etc. It is what our world could be both in dreams and nightmares.

Arcanum was a world that I feel was good in concept, but was lost in poor gameplay and balance issues. I don't feel I know the world despite the large and well developed towns. I'd like to know it better.

Fallout needs no explanation here, I do believe.

Thanks Ender, and a good and consistent explanation of each world.

Have to agree with you what you say, on the games that I know anything about.

Couldn't you say that Shadowrun is a bit cyberpunk, and Arcanum a bit steampunk? :p
