June 18Jun 18 Send Help - a Sam Raimi "dark comedy thriller?" Should be right up my alley.--first quarter or third was decent enough, setting stuff up.--the rest fell flat for me. It's not that it's not slickly made (maybe a little too slick), with some of Raimi's camera funworks - and the two leads did more than decent acting, but I couldn't stand EITHER character at all. They were both horrible people (not even "love to hate" types) and maybe that was supposed to be darkly comical but largely I was simply annoyed. The annoyance grew and grew and by 3/4 mark I was over it and I would've killed both them myself if I was on their island. The ending didn't satisfy either.--the cgi boar looked terrible, but that might have been OTP on purpose to be "funny?" I miss Raimi's practical work. Oh well.I was oddly reminded a couple times of the 1989 movie War of the Roses - not in plot/setting but the chr dynamics/antipathy. Except WotRoses was more dark-amusing.======Project Hail Mary apparently went to MGM+ first, which I happen to sub to - so I get to rewatch it, in whole or in part, as often as I want for a while. Yay. it's such a feel good movie. Still gaming with my 9900k/2080ti/32 ram.
June 20Jun 20 @PK htiw klaw eriFA blu-ray of a completely restored version of Ken Russell's The Devils will be releasing...at some point following a theatrical run in October. Warner Bros. finally decided to release it from the vaults before physical media dies altogether. Edited June 20Jun 20 by Bartimaeus Quote Against stupidity we have no defense. Neither protests nor force can touch it. Reasoning is of no use. Facts that contradict personal prejudices can simply be disbelieved - indeed, the fool can counter by criticizing them, and if they are undeniable, they can just be pushed aside as trivial exceptions. So the fool, as distinct from the scoundrel, is completely self-satisfied. In fact, they can easily become dangerous, as it does not take much to make them aggressive. For that reason, greater caution is called for than with a malicious one. Never again will we try to persuade the stupid person with reasons, for it is senseless and dangerous.

The Wizard of Oz stuff is even more on the nose than normal and it's very much direct in line with Blue Velvet . In some ways I think it's probably the safest film he's made. Because I'm the one that picked it, because it's one of my favorite movies of all time. Now you should watch it too. It's a movie that somehow encapsulates both the hazy insanity of my childhood and the darkest terrors of my adulthood, and maybe it will yours too.I chose it for me and my wife's own little film club of two (having not seen it beforehand), she absolutely loved it and had the same experience in terms of it capturing her childhood.I liked it a lot too, though it didn't resonate on a personal level as much. Sentimental Value was quite similar in that regard.

July 28Jul 28 https://variety.com/2026/film/box-office/the-odyssey-box-office-nolan-shattering-expectations-1236821760/After 2 weekends Odyssey has shattered box office expectations and reached its breaking point of $650 millionBut that's just after 10 days !!! Its now predicted to comfortably reach that $1 billion sales figureNolan took a risk with this movie, it was the most expensive movie he has ever made. Total costs with marketing were about $400 million. But it paid off nicely. Good to see "With a sensational second weekend at the box office, it’s clear “The Odyssey” will have a long — and epic — journey in theaters.Christopher Nolan‘s take on Homer’s 3,000-year-old poem, starring Matt Damon as the Greek king Odysseus, has generated a remarkable $652 million worldwide, including $289 million domestically and $362 million internationally after just 10 days of release. It’s already the sixth-highest grossing Hollywood movie of the year at the global box office — no small feat for a sword-and-sandal epic that’s rated R and clocks in at nearly three hours. With euphoric word-of-mouth and staggering demand for premium large formats like Imax, “The Odyssey” is expected to shatter all kinds of records throughout the rest of summer and into the fall. It could overtake 2009’s “The Dark Knight” ($1.008 billion) and 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises” ($1.08 billion) as Nolan’s highest-grossing film." Friday at 10:54 PM3 days Saw The Odyssey. It's a good movie, I would put it on par with the Oppenheimer, but there is definitely a downward trend with Nolans movies, for me at least. I wouldn't compare either of those with Inception, Interstellar, or even his Batman movies. The music in The Odyssey is definitely the weakest from all his movies so far.I don't know if he has started to sniff his own farts or maybe his brother is missing from the formula, but there is definitely something missing from his recent movies. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing in particular against his rendition of the The Odyssey, apart from the already memed scenes, but for someone of his caliber I wasn't wowed.I loved the practical effect, even more so when I know how he did them, but it just wasn't enough to take it to that level where I was wowed. Maybe I am at fault for expecting him to one up himself, or maybe it's not an original story, whatever it is I somehow doubt he will change anything going forward. Funny thing is though, I only empathized with one character in the movie. There were a lot of talented actors, but I didn't really feel much of anything. I've had a similar experiences with his other films. In contrast, I empathized with the cast in Project Hail Mary. "Can't sleep the drones will kill me."
