February 22Feb 22 Sentimental Value was good. Very good even. Would be a dark horse to win the oscars if more people saw it.I just noticed the same director made Thelma, which I really liked and probably even fewer people have seen.
March 2Mar 2 KPop Demon Hunters (2025).Despite not liking a single one of the songs (really, more an issue of the choice of vocalists than anything else, I think - it was a truly ghastly collection of singing voices, I'm afraid, though I'm obviously not into kpop which certainly has to play into that issue), I did enjoy the movie overall. Did it feel like I was re-watching what was essentially a dressed-up and restructured version of a certain Disney film released 13 years ago?...Yes, yes it did. But I like Frozen, so I think that's okay. Also, the above image is surprisingly not from Frozen, it's actually from KPop Demon Hunters but it came like halfway through the film when I was already feeling like I was watching Frozen and, look, they heard my brain, because there's Frozen! Edited March 2Mar 2 by Bartimaeus Quote Against stupidity we have no defense. Neither protests nor force can touch it. Reasoning is of no use. Facts that contradict personal prejudices can simply be disbelieved - indeed, the fool can counter by criticizing them, and if they are undeniable, they can just be pushed aside as trivial exceptions. So the fool, as distinct from the scoundrel, is completely self-satisfied. In fact, they can easily become dangerous, as it does not take much to make them aggressive. For that reason, greater caution is called for than with a malicious one. Never again will we try to persuade the stupid person with reasons, for it is senseless and dangerous.

March 8Mar 8 "Do you want to know more? (about this character)" Yes. (takes place after Once Upon A time in Hollywood)Tarantino/script, Fincher/director. DiCaprio, not involved. I read it'll have a limited theater release/Netflix. Still gaming with my 9900k/2080ti/32 ram. One day I suppose a game may inspire me to finally upgrade. Maybe.
March 19Mar 19 Sounds like a Maori chant there. I should probably re-read the books. Why has elegance found so little following? Elegance has the disadvantage that hard work is needed to achieve it and a good education to appreciate it. - Edsger Wybe Dijkstra
March 19Mar 19 Apparently Av:D and Dune:M are coming out the same week. Dunedoom or Doomessiah. Is this another Barbenheimer or will one of them blink and change dates? They are probably targeting a similar audience, so a change would make sense. "It has just been discovered that research causes cancer in rats."

April 20Apr 20 Saw Lee Cronin's The Mummy. It's okay, but feels overly tinkered with. Plot spoilersNot really a Mummy film, either...more of a demonic possession film. It avoides Egyptian mythology by setting the entity in a time prior to recorded Egyptian history. But this makes understanding what the family is dealing with unclear as we dont really understand the 'rules' around it.The cast is all good, no complaints there. They do a good job explaining why the family thinks they can handle caring for Katie (live in Grandma, mother is a nurse) but not why, as they all notice increasingly weird things, that they don't talk about. When the dad finds weird black goo under the carpet he...doesnt tell anyone. When the mom notices the grandma's false teeth on the ground some distance from where she supposedly accidently fell through the window she again doesn't act on it. I feel like perhaps missing in the story is some bit where the entity was using its powers to dim their ability to act on things but it isn't really there in the film. There are a lot of other weird elements too, like the Grandmother's death scene leaves the dad and two kids trapped in a car surrounded by wolves but never explains how they got out of it.The film appears to be set in the early 70s (based on the impending flooding of land by the Aswan dam being important to the plot) but a couple of scenes have cell phones and Taylor Swift references...could the reshoots the film had been to try to not have it be a period film? Weirdly other than the opening (where the dad watches himself on tv) and a brief shot of a tv with Scooby Doo on it, theres no real use of phones and tvs to establish when the film is taking place in.Finally, if the entity could be swapped from person-to-person as the epilogue showed, what was the need to keep the entity trapped in a body until death? Was the lady who kidnapped Katie under the influence of the entity (as implied in the opening when she was said she was tired of her family) or was she part of a long tradition saving the world from it (as applied in the videotape)? Perhaps part of an altered premise with reshoots? In not answering these questions, I feel the film ends on a particularly compromised noteAlso watched THE NIGHT OF BIG HEAT, a lesser variation on Planet Films earlier ISLAND OF TERROR. IOT is the stronger film. Most of the characters in HEAT are ciphers and/or jerks. And watcged BRAINSMASHER...A LOVE STORY a romantic comedy about a bouncer and a model falling in love over a night of running away from Chinese cultists who want a flower that will bring ultimate power but was found and is in the hands of the model's sister. So they will murder anyone in their way. Setup sounds a bit BUG TROULBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, but the film feels more like a companion piece to MYSTERY MEN with its over the top low level comic book heroics. I cannot - yet I must. 19 hours ago19 hr American Psycho. Idk, I probably don't get it, but overall a boring flick. Probably has more to do with the time it came out. "because they filled mommy with enough mythic power to become a demi-god" - KP
14 hours ago14 hr I finally watched Alien: Romulus before it left HBO/Max.I actually quite liked most of the first half or 2/3rds or so. Loads better than expected. I don't know when it exactly started to slide down for me - maybe after the first death or two. Mostly it became too much of a retread mix re: 1st two films - which is hard to avoid for this series, I know, but in theory is fine if it's done well. But it was only just ok, with other niggling issues as well, and my eyes started rolling a little too often. :D Still, I'd say I mostly liked it better than all the other films after 1 and 2.I was once again impressed with David Jonsson (1st seen by me in The Long Walk). The female lead/Ripley stand-in was decent too. The rest were meh. The entire original Alien cast, were all better/more engaging, even with shortish screen time, then the expendables in this one.
