majestic Posted August 22 Posted August 22 So, like, watched the new Fantastic 4 film. It's your average, run-off-the-mill Marvel film. A fun first hour where everything gets established and a less fun final hour of really schlocky superhero battles including your average sky beams, although it was the good guy's skybeams this time around. There's one pretty bad thing: The moral dilemma. Almost made me barf. There are better Marvel films. Much worse ones too. No mind to think. No will to break. No voice to cry suffering.
Bartimaeus Posted August 24 Posted August 24 I've been in a re-watching mood. 12 Angry Men is so good, it's a film that can really change someone's entire outlook on how they perceive the world and all the assumptions they make about it, and the impossibility of really trying to figure out what's actually happened or what's truly right or wrong given our pathetically limited point of view. Quote Against stupidity we have no defense. Neither protests nor force can touch it. Reasoning is of no use. Facts that contradict personal prejudices can simply be disbelieved - indeed, the fool can counter by criticizing them, and if they are undeniable, they can just be pushed aside as trivial exceptions. So the fool, as distinct from the scoundrel, is completely self-satisfied. In fact, they can easily become dangerous, as it does not take much to make them aggressive. For that reason, greater caution is called for than with a malicious one. Never again will we try to persuade the stupid person with reasons, for it is senseless and dangerous.
Amentep Posted September 8 Posted September 8 I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man
Hurlshort Posted September 8 Posted September 8 I watched this with my wife this weekend and it was fantastic. It might not make as much sense if you didn't grow up in the Bay Area in the 80's, but I think it will hold up as a funky piece of cinema for everyone. 1 1
Amentep Posted September 9 Posted September 9 Freaky Tales looked good from the trailers. Looking forward to seeing it eventually. 1 I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man
Sarex Posted September 9 Posted September 9 Am I missing something, isn't Freaky Tales out already? "because they filled mommy with enough mythic power to become a demi-god" - KP

melkathi Posted September 9 Posted September 9 Last thing I watched in the cinema was Barefoot in the Park with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda... Unobtrusively informing you about my new ebook (which you should feel free to read and shower with praise).

melkathi Posted September 9 Posted September 9 (edited) Tonight they are showing Casablanca. You may of course not have heard of this movie as it is ultra contemporary. It is basically about the current state of the world, talking about resistance against fascism as well as the plight of refugees trying to reach the USA. Lexx Posted September 9 Posted September 9 (edited) I never actually watched the original Casablanca, but I believe that many years ago I've watched some movie about Hong Kong in WW2(?) which had an oddly similar plot. Can't remember the name. Maybe one day I will finally watch the original Casablanca. Edited September 9 by Lexx "only when you no-life you can exist forever, because what does not live cannot die."
LadyCrimson Posted September 9 Posted September 9 (edited) --Freaky Tales is on HBO/Max and rentable via Prime already. I have it watchlisted. Like with everything I watchlist, I may get around to it "someday." --Casablanca - I tried to watch that once years ago. I was bored, didn't finish. I've seen all the famous clips and quips of course. High Sierra and Treasure of the Sierra Madre was more my speed re: Bogart/time period. I think they were the only two of his films I finished. Most films before mid-late-50's I won't get half way through them, with the cinematic styles of the period and stage like acting/direction just not doing it for me. There are notable exceptions, of course. High Noon, 12 Angry Men, Grapes of Wrath, early Hitch**** films, Singing in the Rain, early sci-fi. etc. But I remember this film I saw on TV once, I loved it back then. Called ... (google fu) ... Topper, 1937 (in b&w, never saw colorized versions, don't want to). Maybe one of 2 or 3 Cary Grant films I've seen in full. It was comedic/funny and Roland Young as the older Topper was great. Now I want to find/see it again. Don't think I saw the sequels. Edit: I probably liked light comedies/musicals of those eras more than other genres. Amentep Posted September 9 Posted September 9 First Topper is probably the best from memory. From a Thorne Smith book which is a solid start, and Young, Grant, Constance Bennet and Billie Burke are all solid. Second one has a lot of similar gags but loses Grant. Third is a comedy murder mystery with Joan Blondell as a new ghost pulling Cosmo into adventure (solving her murder) to the annoyance of his wife. I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? melkathi Posted September 10 Posted September 10 I watched Dr No in the outdoor cinema this year. I didn't remember how bad that movie actually was. But it made history. So many things in later movies were directly inspired by it, including the villain dying in a tank of liquid, with just the hand above the water as he dies. It's rated very high on the rotten tomato meter, so I guess most critics don't agree with you. It is, of course, pretty culturally dated at this point, but that's also interesting from a historical perspective. "It has just been discovered that research causes cancer in rats."
melkathi Posted Thursday at 08:15 AM Posted Thursday at 08:15 AM It created this whole genre of movies and at the time was something completely new. But when you look at plot, character depth (wet footprint stepping out of the shower), weeeell we had seen better even then. And when you compare it to the James Bond movies that came after, when the movie makers knew this was something people wanted, you can see how much more effort they started putting in for those. LadyCrimson Posted Thursday at 06:22 PM Posted Thursday at 06:22 PM I just noticed that Dust Bunny trailer. If it has Mads, I'm watchin'. Also, looks good in general/my type of genre, at least. Lexx Posted Saturday at 06:07 PM Posted Saturday at 06:07 PM Just watched the new Superman. Thought it was pretty good, all things considered. Some parts are a little silly or make no sense, but eh. Managed to stay awake through the whole movie and the ending was very nice and beautiful. "only when you no-life you can exist forever, because what does not live cannot die."
