In that case, It might be different country by country, all people which I know, have been playing D2 day and night due to awesome possibilities of SP, I spent few hundred hours on it as well, and played maybe 1 hour of MP

Nah, different era is just an excuse to expand the MP crowd for more milking. Good quality SP games still sell like hot cakes in millions. It’s just less profitable for the stockholders

Same thing here, though I did spend a bunch of hours on playing it in a LAN, but percentage wise we're talking about maybe 0.5%

Possibly, all my friends and classmates went on and on about the ladder (was there MP only loot?) and well, I guess duping   Always online might not be all that terrible, D3 RoS at least isn't an issue other than battling the lag I get from having NA-tier telecom

D2 Duping was even easier in SP though IIRC We did it all the time, we played SP for few days, and went to local gaming café for few hours to exchange loot, with backed up characters of course that was like our most used reason to start MP game ever

The thing with D2 is that if you want to play through Hell difficulty, you have no choice but to

- grind like a mofo for special items, which can take you hundreds of hours... maybe your luck is so bad that good stuff never drops, or

- you play online and trade with other players.

The furthest I was able to advance my character (level 97) was in online mode, since I was able to get good gear that allowed me to survive in Hell difficulty. My sp character that I started first was never able to get out of that hole.

Eh, I managed to single player self-found finish Hell once, during the time in Lord of Destruction when physical resistance was not nerfed yet and the guided arrow bug with piercing still present. All that needed was farming Nightmare Mephisto for a bit.

A bit cheap, perhaps, but it worked well enough. Nerfhammer/bugfix hit hard though.

Hmm, I was able to finish D2 plus expansion on Hell with Sorceress and Paladin without grinding. Of course it was not Hardcore characters. The Paladin has even a silly Fist of Heaven build to mock all my “powergamer try-hard” friends  The only issue I had, was the council at the act III which had on hell many members with lightning immunities.

Maybe you got lucky, or built-in teleport spell for sorceress makes it naturally easier since you can easily avoid bad situations (never really played sorc, so dunno). My amazon had a terrible time in act3 due to all the lightning res mobs, and similar issues in every other situation with lightning immunities. The situation changed once I got my hands on gear that would break immunity, etc. but it was a long way (not very long in mp, since I was able to trade runes for gear).

IIRC I had with sorceress mixed fire/ice build, so this might have helped. But Paladin had some issues with that Fist of Heaven build, as it was Lightning damage as well. But I think, it was not pure Lightning, as I was able to defeat the three barbarians as well with him. With a lot of kiting, but still. The only other class which I played outside of Normal was Necromancer, but with him, I have never gone for Hell either

The only time I played the Diablo series was D2 at a small LAN party I think (four people). I think I was a Barbarian who refused to wear any chest armour. Probably played for an hour or two? I think Total Annihilation was the go-to LAN game for my circle back then.
