Well I guess every scuba qualifying agency is going to have to change their procedure because the OK sign is part of the hand signals they teach you.

So, if I decide to troll people, and a poop sign will be meaning people of color, should the poop sign be banned? If I will replace it later on, with a toilet sign, will it also be banned? If I will use an 'equal' sign for straight supremacy, will this need to be banned as well? Thumbs up being a gay-catcall? Just because a bunch of weirdos decided to push something trolly and prove how stupid and over sanitized environment will become, that should then result in vast majority of people to adapt and change, just not to be falsely accused due to lack of context?

Because of SM now you can pull a picture out of context and even if the person has only mediocrum of a centrist-right worldview, you can start slapping them as supre-whatever.

I know it's a problem because of these sorts of situations. I assume it's also a common symbol in sign language.

It all depends on how the sign is adopted and interpreted by the population at large. If it's one guy with a sign, one time, it doesn't mean a whole lot, if neonazis start using a previously innocuous sign in a more systematic fashion then you have a problem.

It would be kinda hilarious if they took up a campaign to corrupt every single ASL hand sign.

So once "corrupted", never to return to normal?

Kinda shows the problem of believing stuff just because someone posted it to the internet.

And I'd hate to mess with ASL, because it'd mess with the fun of watching David Cowan interpret -

Some of you folks seem rigidly attached to certain symbols, words, and gestures. Things change over time, relax, it has been like that through all of human history and we are still here.

Also, I am interested to see how DP's campaign to influence the poop emoji will go. I like the confidence! :p

It was an example, but hey, if you can modify an OK sign, I guess you can turn on everything with the right spin and resources.

Yes, everything can be changed over time. There is no shortage of replacement options though. Humans are creative and etymology is fascinating!

I'm not sure the OK symbol is an example of something changing over time due to use, as much as its an example of the OK symbol being metaphorically attacked in a back alley by a gang, taken away and held hostage in an undisclosed location while an exact duplicated created through cunning and cutting edge plastic surgery takes its place. :p

Probably reasons to be suspicious of the OK symbol...

the lawyer for gondor sought a tro effective against the biden presidency and it is one o' the more curious requests for judicial relief we have ever seen.

is not long and is worth a read:

After considering Plaintiff’s Motion for Temporary Restraining Order against
Defendants, ex parte, due to the risk of immediate and irreparable harm, to be caused
to Plaintiffs by the members of the illegitimate 117th “Congress” and the 46th
“President,” Joseph P. Biden,1 whom said illegitimate Congress did unlawfully
confirm to the office, who unlawfully hold the mantles of office, to temporarily
restrain the effects of their illegal acts (including the barrage of executive orders,
which severely threaten economic stability) and to restore the status quo ante, on the
pleadings, declarations, expert reports, and other documentary evidence in support
thereof, the Court FINDS as follows:

...

keep in mind, is a request and not the court granting.

https://www.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.txwd.1120287/gov.uscourts.txwd.1120287.6.9_1.pdf

highlights include:

--"All Senators who were not subject to the 2020 Election shall remain in
office, except for current Senators who participated in the legislative
process and/or the vote that led to the enactment of the Help America Vote
Act of 2002, including any amendments thereto, shall also be temporarily
barred from holding public office (the “Complicit Senators”) because they
likely knew or reasonably should have known of the harm being perpetrated
on the American electorate, yet failed to take any action to stop it;"

--all "complicit" Congressmen will be escorted from Capitol and barred from grounds

--court will appoint stewards to effective continue the business o' the executive. stewards will be chosen from the previous administration's cabinet as it existed in august of 2020. why august? "August 1, 2021 is a date before the 2020 election campaigns for Congress and the President began. Oftentimes,
there are seismic shifts in government bureaucracies and policy just prior to an election as government officials
tend to shift policy and personnel positions in anticipation of who may come to power in the wake of an election."

--All persons who acted in a legislative manner in the 107th Congress and had
expressed knowledge of the Help America Vote Act of 2002, and as amended
in 2005 and 2008, including but not limited to Mike Pence, all named
Defendants in this lawsuit, and any member of staff thereof shall be barred
from holding any position in government or administration of government
pending the preliminary injunction hearing;

(original act passed 92-2 in senate)

aside, the 114th Congress pretty much resubmitted and expanded hava, nvra and uocava, provisions. am not certain why the senators o' the 114th Congress avoid complicit label.

--placing the use o' air force one and the nuclear football under the control o' the stewards. again, the stewards is the unelected cabinet members o' the trump admin as of august 2020.

HA! Good Fun!

ps a bit different from the gondor lawyer, https://clarelocke.com/ is representing Dominion regarding their defamation case v. rudy, and they are having fun with it while public eviscerating "america's mayor."

https://www.washingtonpost.com/context/dominion-voting-systems-defamation-lawsuit-against-lawyer-rudy-giuliani/91600fbd-9526-46ef-b951-b6f9b89950fc/?itid=lk_inline_manual_32

as ludicrous as it sounds given the case involves rudy hawking pills and protection from cyberthieves on his laughable podcasts, this controversy has the potential to be paradigm shifting. fox and oan and news max is on the hook. as we has mentioned elsewhere, those organizations is liable as publishers o' rudy's alleged defamation. dominion is consciously demanding $1.3 BILLION from rudy, but is likely they will use judgement to get their money from fox and others.

might very well be bigger than ny times v. sullivan, particular from a practical impact pov.

Sen. Tom Cotton Bragged He Was an ‘Army Ranger.’ He Was Not

“My experience as a U.S. Army Ranger in Iraq and Afghanistan and my experience in business will put me in very good condition,” Cotton said in a 2012 interview with the Hot Springs Sentinel-Record. And in another interview, Cotton claimed that he “became an infantry officer and an Army Ranger.”

But the Army’s own website makes clear the distinction between joining the 75th Ranger Regiment and taking the U.S. Army Ranger Course. “People often confuse the 75th Ranger Regiment with the U.S. Army Ranger Course,” the regiment’s public affairs office wrote. But to join the Ranger regiment, members of the Army have to pass the “Ranger Assessment Selection Program [RASP] 1, 2, or both.” Cotton did not.

Clearly there's a need for a white hyena poo symbol.

Brenton Tarrant was a member of 4/8chan, that's literally literally why he chose the OK sign to use. The whole point of him using it was to show how easy it was to take something with a perfectly innocent meaning and make it signum non gratum. Treating it as a white power sign is exactly what he wanted.

The counterexample would be something like Pepe being a 'white power' symbol based on, well, Hillary Clinton's campaign not understanding the maymays and her media supporters wanting to back her even on something so patently stupid. Which ended up with some people thinking the Hong Kong protesters were white supremacists (!), since they used Pepe extensively.

"When Sollenberger reached out to Cotton’s office for a comment, his spokesperson, Caroline Tabler, replied, “Senator Cotton graduated from Ranger school and is more of a Ranger than a Salon reporter like you will ever be.”

That response is so hostile it's actually quite funny.   Does sound like a situation they should be clear on, not the first time I've seen this confusion either innocent or not, even some active duty people are saying getting the tab means you are a Ranger, others don't.  Heh, also a lot of comments bigging up the 75th which remind me of reading BHD where the Delta soldiers regard the Rangers as incompetent.

Might be giving the guy too much credit though. Could he repeat such a thing? Did he really have control over it once it started to spread? Symbols are a notoriously fickle thing.

It's unlikely he could repeat such a thing, since he's stuck in a cell in Paremoremo (?) basically incommunicado for the rest of his life.

The whole point of using it during the Mosque shooting was that once done the media would compulsively push the 'white power symbol' thing into the mainstream, no matter how objectively dumb it was.

Just curious. Graduating from Ranger School doesn't make you a 'Ranger'? Only serving in the Ranger unit does? What if one serves in the unit as enlisted but never completes Ranger School? The Army website does not make it unequivocally clear.

I was not in the army and I’m not exactly sure how they do it. But I believe army ranger is a MOS. You can be in a Ranger unit without having the MOS but you’re not a Ranger unless you have the MOS and have been through the school.

In the Marine Corps the elite school is the scout sniper school. There are scout sniper is attached to every infantry Regiment. but they do not have the same MOS as an infantryman.
