What part of that meal would be considered unhealthy?

All of it, unless that cole slaw was made with a simple vinegar and oil dressing (and even then some people just drown everything in oil, ugh), rather than the sweetened mayonnaise fat bomb that Americans usually treat their cabbage to. It's kind of hard to see in the picture.

Are bake-beans considered unhealthy and why is the meat unhealthy?

I am not suggesting people eat this type of meal everyday but is it really that bad for you?

No, it's okay every once in a while, of course. Just like going to your favorite fast food chain is and getting a burger with fries. The occassional intake of such things isn't a problem, it's consuming it regularily.

However, since the question was, "is this a healthy meal?" then the answer is quite frankly no. Keyrock is right calling it a "healthy" Trucker diet. :p

Baked beans can be a healthy protein source but you really need to make them yourself. They're otherwise often drowned in salt and sugar, and that Truck stop more likely than not doesn't have a healthy baked beans recipe, assuming they cook the baked beans themselves and aren't just using convenience products.

The slaw was not sweetened at all, it was more zesty than anything else.

Also, this wasn't from the truck stop. I had enough time to drop my trailer at the truck stop then bobtail 3 miles down the road to a BBQ joint and back. I don't always have that luxury and have to settle for whatever is at the truck stop.

"Healthy" Trucker Meal Deluxe:

It's almost Keto! ...if you reduce the beans a little and the sauces aren't 90% sugar.

...occasionally I go to Nob Hill and get 2-3 of their hot-food BBQ pork ribs. I'm sure the sauce is a sugar bomb to speak but eh, in such small portion it won't kill me. Goes with the big bowl of rabbit food etc. nicely at any rate.

...I miss potato salad sometimes. Wasn't a huge fan of such overall but there's a style (extra egg and maybe mustard in it I think, it's kinda yellowish?) lots of crunchy pickle, onion bits etc) that I liked a lot.

Tonight I am cooking myself Ostrich Steaks with Roast Potatoes and I am making a rich, gourmet cheese sauce which  is store bought but I always add additional cheese and other ingredients if I want

And cheese sauce does work with Ostrich because its from the poultry family and cheese always works with Chicken 🧀

I would totally try ostrich. Does it really taste like chicken / turkey? Are the legs and thighs "fattier" than the breast? Do they turn the wings into a giant hotwing?

Good questions, you are the first person on any forum I frequent who has ever expressed such interest in this type of SA local  meat, I will try to answer

  • The Ostrich has very little  fat so it doesnt have much natural taste....less than chicken
  • It tastes more like  vension with a hartier taste than chicken but not as tasty IMO
  • I have never seen the legs ever served in restaurants but I doubt they have much fat on them
  • The wings would be too big and not that edible for wings I imagine

So its easy to assume ....whats the point, where is the fun in eating Ostrich ? But you get  steaks, ostrich dried meat, Ostrich eggs, cubed and sliced Ostrich for stir-fry's and Ostrich stews. So basically people eat it because its so healthy with no fat ....but personally normal chicken and other meats taste better for me

Oh something else about Ostrich, you can and do it eat raw unlike chicken. For example I have eaten Ostrich Carpaccio and then another benefit you get Ostrich mince, this you cook,  which you can substitute for beef mince in meals like Bolognaise

Also I confirmed you do get Ostrich in the US, its not common but you can order it. You even get Ostrich farms in Texas and one or 2 other states, I didnt know this but this farm was visited on the Food Network  Channel

https://www.superiorostrich.com/

The reason I am still mentioning this because I am interested in what you think once you have tasted Ostrich, its always good to understand the appetites and views of markets that have spending power like the US. Which in this particular sector translates to citizens like you and the question "would you eat and therefore pay for Ostrich "

So why dont you order some Ostrich from this farm or just see if you can find it in any local butcher which will be cheaper I imagine ?

I appreciate the details...if I ever come across it Ill give it a try. 👍 Speaking of carpaccio, I tried both beef and salmon carpaccio in Mexico. They were alright but I wouldnt go out of my way to order either again.

Yes your reaction is not uncommon because all Carpaccio is the meat in its raw form and for me the meat always tastes better cooked....thats why  I will only order capaccio as a starter maybe 1/10 times  I eat at restaurants that serve it

The reason its served I imagine is for people to sample the meat in its pure form....in small doses on some quality bread but its still not that great for me 🍗

But well done for trying something different in Mexico. Many people I know, like most of my family, wont deviate from a standard ordering of the same food with nothing new generally

And of course I respect someone's food choice in a restaurant....they paying for it and eating it after all

But if you experiment and  create a system that says " every 4tn restaurant I go to  I will order something new " you will find more good experiences than bad...and yes their will be some but for me that was honestly 10 % of all restaurants I did this in

Heh, thats exactly the approach I took this vacation. All the restaurants on the resort are already included in the price so every night I would scan the menu of whatever place we were eating at and specifically choose something that I wouldnt normally order for myself. I tried a snapper dish, and it was alright. Im not a huge fish eater but shellfish and crustaceans can GET IN MY BELLY.

Aside, they have the best goddamn fresh fruit in the world in Mexico. Seemed like they were picking it off a tree right out back and serving it to my plate it was so fresh and sweet.

Just watched a video on how to “skin“ a watermelon. You’re left with a big red ball and two empty rinds. Why would you wanna do that though? The best part about munching on a slice of watermelon is it has a handle to hold onto.

I am seriously jealous....their are very things better in the world of gastronomy  than an inclusive restaurant price and you had choice which isnt always an option

That is my best way to eat meals I normally wouldnt pay for ( I dont mind one of my  siblings paying for me ;) )because they too expensive like crayfish or lobster

How many restaurants were their and what were the food styles? Was their Mexican, Japanese, US Steakhouses etc.

GD .....where have you been living? This is the new SJ, liberal way of opening the Watermelon....no ones feelings get hurt, we revise history  and we recognizing Colonialism and white, male privilege. Everyone knows this....you dont EVER open the watermelon the old way, that is too effective and creates less theater :teehee:

only just saw this, so apologies for the kinda necro aspect.

could probable smoke a couple packs o' virginia death sticks and such would be no more unhealthy than consuming a typical batch o' baked beans, and am ok with that. traditional baked bean recipe includes 1:1 ratio o' dried beans to bacon plus a substantial 'mount o' sugar. if am using a pound o' beans, then am personal adding 'bout a 1/2 cup o' sugars... even split brown sugar and molasses.  cook for at least six hours.

...

am s'posing you could make healthier baked beans, but what would be the point?

HA! Good Fun!

Sometimes I just throw stuff in the oven and it works out alright. Chicken thigh, "pearl potatoes" (no idea what they're called in English, very small ones), red onion boats, garlic, turnip with chicken broth and lots of spices, dijon mustard and herbs. Paired well with a Grenache from A Tribute to Grace, a wonderful Californian-based producer who specialises in the Grenache variety. California has some of the worst wines in the world, but the best producers gives some of the best quality-price-ratio in the world.
