The true nature of freedom is such, that the human mind is unable to comprehend it, so we make a cage and name it freedom in order to give a tangible meaning to what we dont understand, just as our ancestors made gods like Thor or Zeus to explain thunder. -Teknoman2- What? teknoman2 Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 For the cheap shots.. while technically correct, it disregards a simple but important fact: cultural compatibility. why the one time it didn't work... it didn't work? because you had a local population that was living a completely different life with a completely different set of rules and values and a complete lack of the concept of land ownership, borders and war compared to those who came. and those who came brought along a culture that could not coexist with the local culture so one of them eventually had to go... and as is the human way of making the choice, one of them was wiped out violently for the other to become dominant (and having an expansonistic policy about that culture and religion was also a major motive). many of the so called refugees of the past were people of european descent so they had much in common with the locals of USA who are also mainly of european descent so there were few excuses for clashes. east asians on the other hand, while proud of their culture, were secretive with it and tried to keep it out of sight of gwailos. that secrecy was also the reason for them not having expansionistic tendencies that would cause a clash. and coming to today, we have a large mass of people who follow an incompatible and highly expansionistic culture coming to the west. i wonder what part of history this makes people remember. Hurlshort Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 we have a large mass of people who follow an incompatible and highly expansionistic culture coming to the west. i wonder what part of history this makes people remember. Highly expansionistic is really a matter of opinion though. I doubt the refugee caravans fleeing Central and South America, or the refugees fleeing Syria and Iraq, see it as some new colonial era. They just want to get away from the bombs, the violence, and the starvation. Not haha funny, maybe better for the political thread.
Volourn Posted November 23, 2018 Posted November 23, 2018 (edited) "complete lack of the concept of land ownership, borders and war compared to those who came." Huh? Tribes fought each other all teht ime. It including wholesale wiping or subsuming others. And, they certainly had a concept of 'land ownerhsip'. People continue to live in LaLaLand where Native tribes lived in total harmony with no violence or issues until the European showed up. COME ON. That disrespects them as human beings. All humans love to infict violence against others not of their chosen 'group'. "Highly expansionistic is really a matter of opinion though. Seeing as there's a growing overlap we might consider merging the two. I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"* *If you can't tell, it's you.

'Nomadic' to a degree but they certainly had pretty clear 'tribal borders' which is why conflict occurred. You also still hear about it when certain tribes claim certain areas and sue/request the gov't to give them/let them keep 'ownership' of certain land. Of course their concept of 'war' was different, they didn't have the advanced weaponary. But, as soon as they had access to it they certainly didn't refuse it. They loved their guns as much as anyone. And, you claimed they 'lacked the concvept of war, land, etc.'. They did not. It may have been slightly different but they certainly didn't lack the concept of war. COME ON. Anyways, someone link something funny. :D DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.
