Hey guys,

So, I'm making my custom PoE backstory and I'm trying to decide whether I should sacrifice one of the "Sir Not Appearing in this Game" companions (Personally leaning toward Durance, because judging by the ending slides to PoE1 he either self-immolates or turns into a god-hunter based on your choices so it's not terribly likely you'll run into him again). I'm wondering if it's ultimately worth doing that, or if the +1 Constitution and 5% health (Probably one of the best raw statistical upgrades next to the Devil of Caroc) is worth condemning someone to a horrible death of essentially drowning in their own blood.

...

... Well, he is a sexist, ethnically biased, racist old man with plenty of resentment. Skaen would probably appreciate the gift.

...

On the other hand, the Readcerans DID kind of have that whole Godhammer thing coming.

I'm asking this here because while it is a story discussion, it's also a discussion about the mechanics of the game. With the current decisions I'm making, I'm looking at average Constitution and 5% health from Gift of the Machine (A much less difficult decision to make) but I'm wanting to do a front-line, low Deflection build, so grabbing health upgrades wherever I can is definitely in my best interest.

Thoughts?

Can someone let me know if sacrificing the Devil of Caroc to the Blood Pool still lets you get her breastplate later? If so, I might just do that - Dex/Pen is a nice bonus to have.

Keep in mind that the penetration bonus works only from stealth/invisibility...

Oh, good to know! Never mind then. Durance it is.

You could always choose Maneha. I can't imagine anyone feeling guilt for sending her to the pool...

Hi :)

I would generally feel guilt sacrifing a non-hostile intelligent being)

But would probably sacrifice Harmke, Lord Harod, Thaos and Scaenites if it was possible.

I think George was joking about the fact that Maneha's personal quest leads her to a pool, and if you advise her to step into it someone will indeed feel no guilt, but that's Maneha, not the Watcher.

I recently played thru PoE1 again and sacrificed Durance, not especially for the stat bonus (though my rogue won't complain about a little extra DURAbility haha), but I was just glad to be rid of him. Hired a mercanary priest instead, she was 100% less presumptuous. Never looked back!

So you're not only a heartless psychopath who would consign an innocent ally to a horrible death for the sake of a little bit of power, you're also RUDE? There are limits to my civility, good sir.

I would easily sacrifice Durance to the Blood Pool for the sake of getting him to finally shut up.

Speaking in terms of pure mechanics, the question is simple, isn't it? You get free stats for a companion that can be replaced at any tavern.

On the other hand, if we make this philosophical/ethical, it becomes very difficult. Who are you to judge whether an old man dies, regardless of how racist or sexist? Walk a mile in Durance's shoes before you judge him.

See, that's the issue.

With Gift of the Machine, it's an easy choice to make - You could either release a bunch of random soul essence back to the Wheel or take it into yourself to strengthen your own soul. The ethics of HOW you get to that point are pretty dark (You need to feed someone to a Ghul to get the knowledge you need) but the decision itself is a little more justifiable.

For the Blood Pool... I guess it's a credit to the writing team, but anything our character might say to justify doing so rings hollow. They're making the conscious decision to get rid of someone for whatever reason to make themselves more powerful, and they have to be the sort of person who's willing to live with that.

Edit: Basically, it's an RPG not letting you get away with trying to rationalize taking an action that is unequivocally cruel and selfish. Heck, it's not even part of the Survival of the Fittest custom background.

Granted, I'm not sure it would be part of any custom background, since the devs obviously wouldn't want to make a choice like that for the player, so there's that.

I can confirm it's in the game if you sacrifice the devil

So I imagine you played a Cruel/Aggresive PC who's entire goal was to kill every Kith in the Dyrwood?

If not then I really don't understand why you have such a hatred for Durance, he is just being a typical Dyrwoodan...
